Scottsbluff Man Killed in Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Accident

car-pedestrian-accidentA pedestrian has been fatally injured in a Scottsbluff accident.

The accident occurred a little after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police Capt. Brian Wasson says the man was crossing Avenue I just north of West Overland when he stumbled, fell and was struck by a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner told the station that there were several witnesses. Warner and Wasson both say the woman driving the car was not at fault.

The dead man has not been identified.

Scottsbluff Man Facing Drug and Abuse Charges

police-lights-redA Nebraska Panhandle man has been accused of physically abusing his two children.

Online court records say 30-year-old Adam Elwess has been charged with two felony counts of child abuse and one of drug possession.

An arrest affidavit says Elwess’ 5-year-old son told a school nurse on Monday that he fell into a chair and onto the ground after his father kicked him from behind. The boy had some facial injuries. The boy’s 7-year-old sister said her father had grabbed her by the throat and lifted her off the ground.

Elwess was arrested after he was interviewed on Tuesday.

A Scotts Bluff County jailer said Elwess remained in custody on Thursday. Bail has been set at $70,000. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Accidental Calls from Hastings School Alarms Parents

hastings-public-schoolsAccidental automatic calls reporting student absences have alarmed some parents in Hastings.

The district superintendent says a secretary at Longfellow Elementary School accidentally triggered the calls to all parents on the school list, telling them their children had not shown up at school on Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Craig Kautz says several parents called the school to inquire about their children, and about 75 parents went to the school to check on their children.

The school posted signs on the entrances to explain the mistake, and staffers also met parents at the doors. A second automated call was made to the parents, telling them to ignore the first call and apologizing for it.

Brown Bag Luncheon on Thursday, April 25 at 12:00 PM: “Custer in Nebraska: The Royal Buffalo Hunt of 1872” by Jeff Barnes.  Already established as an Indian fighter on the Great Plains, George Armstrong Custer’s 1872 visit to Nebraska wasn’t for war, but for entertainment. It was here he met the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia and Buffalo Bill Cody to engage in what is possibly the best-known big game hunt in the history of the world. This 140th anniversary presentation – told through the newspaper accounts, photographs and illustrations of the day – also covers the rapid transition of the five-year-old state of Nebraska, beginning with the fastest growing city on the frontier and ending with the relocation of the Indian tribes and disappearance of the buffalo herds of the Great Plains.

New Regulations Announced for Lincoln County Court Rooms

lincoln-county-court-houseThe Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has announced new safety and security procedures for the County’s County and District Court rooms.

During an annual review of court room procedures, the Sheriff’s Office implemented changes to items allowed into the court rooms.

Effective April 1, 2013, no knives, tools, cameras, cell-phones, personal electronic devices, purses, backpacks, briefcases, beverages, food items, child carriers, baby bottles or sippy cups will be allowed in any court  rooms.  Medically required equipment will be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

Additionally, all subjects will be required to have one form of photo identification available for inspection.

There are no secure storage places available for items, and the Sheriff’s Office says they will not be responsible for items left outside of the cour room.

Officials highly recommends that citizens do not bring the restricted items into the Court House at all.

Kimball Police Chief Placed on Leave After Allegations of Deceptions Surface

kimball-policeThe police chief of the western Nebraska town of Kimball has been placed on administrative leave as officials investigate reports of deceptions by him.

Kimball Mayor James Schnell confirms that Police Chief Mark Simpson was placed on leave March 15 while officials investigate reports of “suspicious fallacies” regarding Simpson. He declined to elaborate on those reports, saying privacy policies regarding city personnel prevented him from doing so.

At least one report came from Kimball County Sheriff Harry Gillway, who also declined to spell out what deceptions Simpson is accused of making.

Simpson could not be reached for comment.

NPPS Administrators Get a Raise for the 2013-2014 School Year

NP-Public-SchoolsAdministrators with the North Platte Public Schools (NPPS) will get a raise after the Board of Education approved proposed compensation for the 2013-2014 school year Tuesday evening.

Superintendent Marty Bassett, who currently makes $180,000 per year, will get a four percent raise, which will increase his salary to $187,200.  Bassett is just completing his first year as the leader of NPPS.  According to NPPS Board of Education records, Bassett’s predecessor Dr. David Engle, refused raises during his three-year tenure.  Engle’s salary at the time of his resignation was $160,000 annually.

Tami Eshleman, who was recently promoted to Associate Superintendent, will receive an eight percent raise, which will increase her salary from $121,000 to 130,896 per year.  Administrators say the increase in pay is commensurate with the promotion, when compared to similar positions in similar schools.

Board members also noted that it is difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison with other Districts, because each one functions differently when it comes to the duties and responsibilities of employees.

The Board also granted three percent raises to the principal’s in the district, with the exception of Greg Fruhwirth, who took a one percent pay cut.

Full-time principals will make anywhere from $94,200 to 124,324 per year.  The salary for the Principal at North Platte High School may change due to the qualifications and experience of current Principal Todd Rhodes’ replacement.  Rhodes’ recently announced his resignation.

The compensation for administrators is their total compensation, meaning that there are no additional fringe benefits such as contributions for health insurance that are not included.

Teachers in the District received a two percent increase in their pay.

North Platte Roofing Company Gives Back to Local Schools

weathercraft-check-presentationA local roofing company is giving back to local schools following a highly successful year.

Weathercraft Roofing presented $7,500 to both the North Platte Public Schools Foundation and the North Platte St. Pats Endowment.

The checks were presented to the organizations by Weathercraft co-owners Scott Erickson and Joe Staroska.  Staroska said the donation is equal to about $25 for every roofing project completed by Weathercraft.  He said the donations are their way of giving back to the community and showing their customers that they appreciate customers keeping their business local.

Executive Director of the North Platte Public Schools Foundation, Jackie Lucas, said that Weathercraft has been a wonderful donor and contributor to the North Platte Public Schools for a number of years.  She added, “This $7,500 donation is going to go back and effect every student in the district.”  Lucas said the Foundation is going to take the money and “pay if forward” by giving $500 to all 13 schools in the District to help kick off their Steppin’ Out for Education campaign in September.

Wendy Dodson, Executive Director of the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment-Trust stated that the donation will be directed into the Endowment’s Annual Fund, which provides for many things throughout the year including teacher’s salaries, classroom supplies and facility needs.  She said, “The donation is a wonderful example to the community, and it’s really great that Weathercraft feels a connection to our school system as well as the Public school system and feels that it’s important to support both.”

Weathercraft of North Platte was started in 1976 as a branch office of Weathercraft of Lincoln, NE. In 1983, they began operating independently from Weathercraft of Lincoln.. There are three other Weathercraft companies: Weathercraft of Lincoln, NE; Weathercraft of Omaha, NE; and Weathercraft of Colorado Springs, CO. All are completely independently operated.

Weathercraft of North Platte was founded by Alan Erickson and Bill Livengood (Weathercraft of Lincoln) in 1976. Erickson became the sole owner in 1983. He sold the company to Scott Erickson (President) and Joe Staroska (General Manager) in 2006.
