GPRMC Receives Award for Technology to Improve Medication Administration

great_plainsGreat Plains Regional Medical Center (GPRMC) is the recipient of the 2012 Quest for Excellence Award.

The Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) announced Thursday that is one of two recipients honored.

The Quest for Excellence Award is a joint initiative of the NHA, CIMRO of Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska Association for Healthcare Quality, Risk and Safety.  The award showcases exemplary and reproducible models of patient care to the rest of the healthcare community.  This was the ninth year for the award, designed to recognize and reward hospital for their quality improvement achievements.

GPRMC was recognized for the successful implementation of a process to reduce medication administration errors using technology.

GPRMC’s quality improvement project resulted in a significant reduction in medication administration errors and elimination of harmful medication errors.

The results demonstrated active administrative support, education and training, utilizing of technology and electronic documentation and an impressive decrease in administration errors, sustained over time.

In the award application, GPRMC stated, “GPRMC has successfully implemented medication barcode scanning which has improved patient safety by reducing the number of medication errors occurring in our facility.  Decreasing medication errors and increasing scanning compliance rates show that this change is sustainable and has been hardwired into the workflow of the nursing staff.  This initiative is an excellent example of GPRMC’s mission to provide the kind of healthcare we would want for our families.”

The other recipient of the award was Fremont Area Medical Center.

BREAKING: Alleged NP Thieves Charged with Yet Another Burglary

Three North Platte men who were just charged for burglarizing Ideal Linen, have been charged with yet another burglary.

On December 26, 2012 a citizen on East Kaneb Road reported a burglary to his residence.  The citizen advised Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies that a grey safe was taken from his home that contained $23,000, credit cards and various vehicle and equipment titles.

Through a cooperative effort, investigators from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), North Platte Police Department (NPPD) and the CODE Drug Task Force identified suspects in this burglary, as well as other burglaries in Western Nebraska.

On March 12, 2013, 29-year-old Cody Jolliffe of North Platte was arrested for his part in the burglary of the residence.  Jolliffe was placed into custody at the Lincoln County Detention Center on charges of Burglary and Theft by Unlawful Taking.

Investigators say they continued to work the case and on March 13, a NPPD investigator contacted Terry Houchin, 29, and Jacob Moser, 24.  Both subjects were charged with the Kaneb Road burglary.

Investigators say the stolen items were either spent or destroyed by the trio.

Jolliffe was also recently charged with burglarizing the Westfield Car Wash, and all three men have been charged with burglarizing Ideal Linen.

The investigation continues according to the LCSO.

NP Fire Dept. Vehicle Involved in Accident

car-accidentA North Platte Fire Department (NPFD) vehicle was involved in an accident on Wednesday evening.

Firefighter Dave Heitman was driving a NPFD SUV north on Jeffers at around 8:00 p.m. with his lights and sirens on.

According to an accident report, Heitman was crossing the intersection at Jeffers and Rodeo Road when he was struck by a 1999 Chevy Malibu driven by Robert Basile.  Basile’s vehicle struck the rear door on the driver’s side of the NPFD vehicle.

Basile’s vehicle was totaled and the NPFD vehicle sustained about $3,000 in damage.

No one was injured in the accident, and both drivers said they did not see the other crossing the intersection.

Eagle Radio President to Receive Pioneer Award from Broadcasters Foundation of America

Bob-SchmidtBob Schmidt, long time President and CEO of Eagle Communications will be recognized with the Pioneer Award by the Broadcasters Foundation of America.

The award will be presented at the Foundation’s annual breakfast on April 10, during the National Association of Broadcaster’s Show in Las Vegas.  In addition to Schmidt, four other individuals with highly distinguished careers will also be honored for their contributions to the broadcast industry. They include Charles Osgood, CBS News; Skip Finley, Former executive with Inner City Broadcasting; David Kennedy, former President and CEO of Susquehanna Broadcasting; and Mike McKinnon of McKinnon Broadcasting.

Schmidt’s former leadership positions have included:

  • Past Chairman of the CBS Television Network Affiliates Association
  • Past Chairman of the National Associated Press Broadcasters Association
  • Past Chairman of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters
  • Past Chairman of Kansas State Chamber of Commerce
  • Past Chairman of the Political Action Council of Kansas
  • Community Leadership: Hays United Fund, Smoky Hill Country Club, Ellis County Coalition for Economic Development, and many others.

Schmidt served in the Navy in the Philippines in WWII.  He then began a career in Radio while in college as a sportscaster.  Upon graduation from Fort Hays State University in 1950, he was appointed General Manager of KAYS Radio. He was elected Vice President and Director in 1952 of KAYS, Inc.

In 1989 he purchased control of the corporation and was elected President/CEO.  While leading the corporation, the company built or purchased 24 Radio and Television stations and 12 Cable Systems in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas.  The company currently owns and operates 28 “Award Winning” community radio stations and serves 30 communities with broadband service including internet, video, and voice service.  The company also offers wireless broadband service in many of the rural areas they serve.

Schmidt retired as President/CEO of Eagle Communications in 1998 and sold the majority interest in the company to its employees through a Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Nearly 300 Eagle Employee Owners continue to build the company and share in the value of ownership. Bob Schmidt maintains his office in Hays and supervises the management of Sweetwater Ranch near Hays, he is also actively involved in numerous business projects including real estate, stocks/bonds, and oil and gas development.

Among the leadership awards Schmidt has received:

  • “Distinguished Service Award” – Kansas Association of Broadcasters (1972)
  • “Kansas Broadcaster Hall of Fame” – Kansas Association of Broadcasters (2000)
  • “Broadcaster of the Year” – University of Kansas (1964)
  • “Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award” – Hays Chamber of Commerce (1956)

The Pioneer Awards are given annually in recognition of career contributions to the broadcast industry and the community at large, and are named in honor of iconic broadcaster Ward L. Quaal.

Gothenburg Man Escapes Uninjured After Being Buried in Grain Bin

all-points-binA Gothenburg man has been freed after being trapped in a grain bin for four hours.

Rick Frickenstein was reportedly near the bottom of the bin at All Points Cooperative, trying to unplug an auger, when he was covered with grain, according to officials with the Gothenburg Fire Department.

Frickenstein was able to call for help using his cell phone, and rescuers arrived on scene at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters used climbing gear to get to Frickenstein who was buried up to his armpits.

Rescuers worked feverishly to remove pressure from the grain.  They then strapped webbing around Frickenstein’s chest with a rope and vacuumed out the grain.

Frickenstein was taken to Gothenburg Memorial Hospital for observation, but didn’t appear to have injuries, according to authorities.

The All Points elevators were the site of an explosion in December of 2010.

Three NP Men Charged with Burglarizing Ideal Linen

North Platte Police have arrested three men accused of burglarizing Ideal Linen.

During the early morning hours on January 9, officers from the North Platte Police Department (NPPD) found the back door of Ideal Linen at 116 W. 6th pried open.

After an initial investigation, officers discovered that unknown persons had stolen a safe from the business and fled the area using an Ideal Linen delivery truck.

On Tuesday, NPPD investigators met with suspect, Cody Jolliffe, 29, who is currently incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center after being arrested on a Lincoln County burglary warrant.

Upon further investigation, investigators determined that there was probable cause to arrest Jolliffe for the Ideal Linen burglary.  Jolliffe was cited and placed back into custody at the jail.

On Wednesday, investigators were able to identify two other suspects, Terry Houchin, 29, and Jacob Moser, 24, who allegedly also played a role in the Ideal burglary.

All three men were charged with  two counts of Burglary-Forced Entry, and Theft by Unlawful Taking.

NE Man Suspected in Double Shooting Shot and Killed by Valentine Police Officer

officer-involved-shootingA Valentine man suspected of killing one and wounding another has been shot and killed by a Valentine Police Officer.

According to a news release from Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott, the officer was responding to the report of a shooting on Shore Street in Valentine at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  Upon arrival, the officer shot and killed 47-year-old Alvin Clark.

Clark was a suspect in the murder of Ricky Homan, 54, of Valentine.  76-year-old John Malone was also shot and wounded, allegedly by Clark.

According to authorities, Malone was transported to the Valentine Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

The initial shooting, as well as the officer-involved shooting are both under investigation.
