Treasurer Stenberg Announces Publication of 2013 Unclaimed Property Reports

Don Stenberg
Don Stenberg

The names of more than 30,000 Nebraskans and former Nebraskans are included in the 2013 Unclaimed Property Report to be published in Nebraska newspapers in March and April, as required by State law, State Treasurer Don Stenberg said today. The names were added to the database of unclaimed property owners in calendar year 2012 through late January 2013.

In all, the State Treasurer’s Office is holding more than $125 million for more than 350,000 Nebraskans and former Nebraskans, Stenberg said.

“Our database is constantly being updated, so I urge Nebraskans to check the 2013 report in their weekend newspapers and check online at www.treasurer.org. The search is well worth the time and effort. Many people are surprised at what they find and are grateful for the service,” Treasurer Stenberg said. He emphasized that the Treasurer’s Office does not charge for the service.

Property included in the 2013 report is valued at more than $17.8 million. The ten largest properties, ranging from $80,000 to $230,000, are identified by name in the report. The owners of the top ten properties are listed in Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy counties. The tabloid contains 103 properties over $10,000.

The Nebraska Unclaimed Property statutes were enacted into law in 1969. Since then, more than $141 million has been paid out to rightful owners. So far in 2013, more than $1.7 million has been paid with January being a particularly productive month.

Stenberg said the Treasurer’s Office is making a strong effort to locate the owners of especially large properties that have been on the unclaimed property rolls for some time. In January alone, the Unclaimed Property Division returned $1.2 million to rightful owners, including claims of $101,000 to an Omaha couple for a real estate refund, $130,000 to a Lincoln woman from her deceased brother’s insurance, and $66,000 split between two brothers from their deceased uncle’s savings account.

“In the 2013 report we feature several Nebraskans who received unclaimed property through our office in the past year. Money they didn’t know they had went to pay bills, buy season basketball tickets, repair a sewer line, celebrate students’ grades, and improve a rural community. We are happy to see owners make use of the money for everyday needs, and we are happy to play a small role in making it possible for families, schools, and communities to fulfill dreams with these unexpected resources,” Stenberg said.

The tabloid will be published in daily newspapers beginning Sunday with the Omaha World-Herald and the Scottsbluff Star-Herald. It will be published in daily newspapers according to the following schedule:

  • ·         March 10 – Omaha World-Herald, Scottsbluff Star-Herald

  • ·         March 23- Norfolk Daily News, Beatrice Daily Sun, Fremont Tribune, York News-Times.

  • ·         March 24 – Columbus Telegram, Lincoln Journal Star.

  • ·         April 5 – Holdrege Citizen, McCook Gazette.

  • ·         April 6 – Alliance Times-Herald, Hastings Tribune, Kearney Hub, Sidney Sun-Telegraph.

  • ·         April 7 – Grand Island Independent, North Platte Telegraph.

Readers are encouraged to look for their own names as well as the names of relatives, businesses, and friends in the tabloid publication. Each name is listed by last-known county of residence. Readers who find their names or the names of their businesses or of deceased relatives should use one of the following methods to file claims:

  • Check the Nebraska State Treasurer’s website at www.treasurer.org. Type a name in the box on the home page, or click on the Search for Unclaimed Property link in the left navigation pane. For amounts under $300, owners may be able to file their claims online through the website.

                              or

  • Call the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-877-572-9688 toll free outside of Lincoln or 402-471-8497 in Lincoln. Phone calls are taken between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

                              or

  • Complete the claim form found inside the front cover of the tabloid and mail to the State Treasurer’s Office, Unclaimed Property Division, 809 P St., Lincoln, NE 68508-1390. That form will need to be notarized.

Hold On Spring Fever, Winter May Make a Return This Weekend

advisory-map-march-7-noaaWith spring on the horizon, winter is set to remind Central Nebraska that it hasn’t gone anywhere just yet.

Forecasters are saying there’s a good chance for a rain/snow mix in North Platte this weekend.  The latest weather models suggest that wintry weather will most like move in Friday night into Saturday morning.

Snow accumulation is expected for most of the Central Plains, however, it’s too early to tell exactly what path the storm will take.

Northerly winds will blast across the Plains starting Saturday afternoon, and will most likely continue through Sunday.

Authorities would like to remind everyone that the combination of wind and snow, tends to make travel difficult and dangerous.

The National Weather Service in North Platte is giving the area a 60 percent chance of rain Friday night and a 70 percent chance of a rain/snow mix on Saturday.  Winds may wreak havoc with sustained winds around 25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph on Saturday.

Stay tuned to the Post for closings and cancellations, as well as any other vital weather-related information.

Report: Half of All Juvenile Criminals in NE Charged as Adults

juvenile-justiceNearly half of all juveniles accused of a crime in Nebraska are facing their charges in adult court, and a state researcher says many will struggle to find jobs as a result.

Anne Hobbs, director of the Juvenile Justice Institute, said Wednesday that nearly 45 percent of the youths charged in Nebraska were prosecuted as adults between July 2010 and June 2011. More than 4,000 youths were booked into some form of detention during that period.

Hobbs presented her findings Wednesday to the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee. Lawmakers are promising reforms for the state’s juvenile services this year, to focus more on treatment and rehabilitation.

A bill by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha would require juvenile cases to start in juvenile court, instead of adult court.

Kearney’s Archway Monument is Bankrupt

archway-monumentThe Great Platte River Road Archway, in Kearney, is bankrupt.

The tourist attraction filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nebraska.  The filing will allow the attraction to stay open and keep its 10 employees while the Archway reorganizes its finances and wraps up settlements in court.

The Bankruptcy comes as the Archway reportedly owes creditors $20 million dollars, and a host of vendors over $121,000.

Wells Fargo Bank of Minneapolis is the trustee for the Archway’s bondholders, according Randy Wright, an Omaha attorney who represents the Archway.

Officials say the Archway had battled financially for years and has made little progress in repaying bonds and other debts it owes.

The Archway opened in August of 1999.

Judge Orders Second Competency Hearing in Sidney Slaying

Craig-Johnson-2A judge has ordered a second competency evaluation for a man accused of killing his girlfriend in the Panhandle.

Judge Derek Weimer granted a defense motion for the second test on 47-year-old Craig Johnson. Johnson is charged with killing 42-year-old April Smith in December 2011 in the home they shared eight miles west of Sidney.

Johnson was found competent after an evaluation last summer, but authorities say he wasn’t completely cooperative. Weimer has ordered Johnson to be fully cooperative for the next evaluation and take all of his prescription medications.

Scottsbluff Attorney Consider Running for Office in Nebraska, Again

Mike Meister
Mike Meister

A former Democratic candidate for governor is considering another run for office in Nebraska.

Scottsbluff attorney Mike Meister said Wednesday that he has formed an exploratory committee as he decides which office to seek.

Meister says he is pondering a run for governor, the Legislature, or the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Mike Johanns. None of the three seats will have an incumbent in the 2014 race.

Meister was the Democratic Party’s nominee in the 2010 governor’s race, but he lost to Republican Gov. Dave Heineman. Meister joined the race at a disadvantage in late July 2010, with almost no campaign money and fewer than 100 days to go before the general election. He accepted his party’s nomination after the previous nominee, Mark Lakers, abruptly withdrew from the race.

NE Lawmakers May Raise Tax on Beer

beer-taxAlcohol problems that exist in Whiteclay inspired a Nebraska lawmaker to introduce a bill that would increase a beer excise tax by 5 cents per gallon.

Hyannis Sen. Al Davis told lawmakers Monday that the increase would generate about $2.3 million annually over the next two years.

The money would be split evenly between the State Patrol Cash Fund and county law enforcement agencies. Davis says the extra funds would help increase law enforcement staffing to combat alcohol related crimes.

Jason Payne, president of the Nebraska Craft Brewers Guild, opposes the increase. He says it would hurt local breweries. Other opponents say the tax would ultimately be transferred to the consumer.

Nebraska’s current excise tax on beer is 31 cents per gallon, which is higher than all bordering states.

Feds Cite Safety Issues at Lexington Meat Byproducts Plant

OSHAFederal regulators say they’re proposing $91,300 in fines for safety violations at a meat byproducts plant in Lexington.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a news release Tuesday that there are six violations, including one repeat violation, at the Darling International plant. OSHA says the Darling plant operates as Dar Pro in Lexington.

OSHA says the company recycles used restaurant cooking oil and byproducts from the beef, pork and poultry processing industries into usable products.

A call to the Dar Pro plant was referred to Darling’s headquarters in Irving, Texas. A company spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.
