NE Game and Parks Considers Changes In Big Game Hunting Regulations

Nebraska_game_and_parksThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission plans to consider changes to regulations for hunting big game.

The commission’s board will meet March 8 in Kearney, and a public hearing will be at 8 a.m. Commissioners are expected to start discussion on big game regulations at 8:45 a.m.

The board will consider several changes to permits and regulations for hunting antelope, deer and elk, as well as changes to hunting season start dates.

The board also will consider allowing hunting in Western Nebraska Ash Hollow and Rock Creek Station state historical parks.

McCook Man Gets Jail/Probation In Child Prostitution Case

logan-roepkeA McCook man charged with rape in the case of two young Nebraska girls prostituted by their mother has been given jail time and probation.

Logan Roepke, 22, was sentenced in Buffalo County District Court to six months in jail and placed on five years of probation for felony First-Degree Sexual Assault of a 14-year-old girl.

During his sentencing, Roepke apologized to his family, the victim and the court and said the crime for which he has been convicted is out of character, and took full responsibility for the crime.

Roepke is one of six men charged in the prostitution cases centered on a Nebraska woman who received 170 years in prison for prostituting her 7 and 14-year-old daughters.

District Court Judge John Icenogle gave Roepke one day credit for time served.  With “good time,” he could be released after just 104 days.   The conditions of his probation state the he must complete a sex offender counseling program, group counseling, individual or family counseling and attend classes on peer relationships.

Roepke faced anywhere from one to 50 years in prison.

The cases of the other men facing charges are still pending in Buffalo and Franklin counties.

The Post has chosen not to give the name of the mother involved in order to protect the privacy of the two young girls.

Lawmakers Promise Major Push to Reduce Number of Juveniles Incarcerated in Nebraska

ne-legislature-13Lawmakers are promising a major push to reduce the number of incarcerated juveniles in Nebraska, and to make sure their cases are handled more consistently throughout the state.

Sens. Brad Ashford of Omaha and Amanda McGill of Lincoln highlighted a series of reform measures Friday that are set for hearings next week. Ashford says the bills seek to address what he describes as “culture of incarceration” in Nebraska.

A report released Wednesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that Nebraska had the nation’s third-highest juvenile incarceration rate in 2010. Nebraska was one of only six states where the rate has increased.

Ashford, McGill and other lawmakers have submitted bills that are intended to help treat more juveniles in community-based settings.

(UPDATED) North Platte Attorney Announces Intent to Run for State Senate

jones-law-updateA North Platte Attorney has announced his intention to run for State Senate.

Russ Jones announced Friday morning that he will vie to be the next Senator from the State’s 42nd District.

The post will be vacated by Tom Hanson who is not eligible for re-election due to term limits.

Mr. Jones is not without political experience.  He served as an intern at the office of former Nebraska Senator John DeCamp in 1985, then worked for current Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman in 1988.  At the time, Heineman was serving as Chief of Staff for Congressman Hal Daub.

Jones graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1989 and obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1992 from the University of Nebraska College of Law.

He has practiced law in North Platte since 1994, and in 2000, he opened Jones Law Office.

He also currently the president of the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorney’s Association.

According to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website, candidates can’t officially file until December 1.

At this point, no one else has announced their intention to run for the office.

Survey Shows Slow Economic Growth for Nebraska and Other Mid-Western States

moneyA monthly economic survey index for nine Midwest and Plains states dipped last month, suggesting only slow growth for the region over the next three to six months.

The Mid-America Business Conditions index hit 53.1 in February, compared with 53.2 in January and 49.5 in December.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says the region’s manufacturing sector “continues to restrain overall growth for the region and nation.”

The survey of business leaders and supply managers uses a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth while a score below 50 suggests decline for that factor.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Classes at Gordon-Rushville Public Schools Cancelled to Observe Funeral of Local Youth

matt-jaggersSchool was cancelled Thursday at Gordon-Rushville Public Schools so students and faculty could attend the funeral of a local youth.

The district cancelled classes to observe the funeral of 12-year old Matt Jagger, a seventh-grader who was killed in a car crash on February 21.

Administrators opted to call off class due to the large number of students and teachers that planned to attend the service.

Matt died when the vehicle his mother was driving went out of control on slick roads and slid into the path of an oncoming truck.   Matt’s 10-year-old sister was also seriously injured in the crash.

 

MPCC Board of Governors Votes to Keep Student Fees the Same Next Year

MPCCThe Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) Board of Governors voted to hold tuition, fees and room and board costs the same for next year.

At their meeting in North Platte on Wednesday, the Board voted to retain tuition and fees for Nebraska students, as well as border state students at $77.00 per credit hour.  A resident student can expect to pay around $1,300 per semester for a full load of classes.

Room and board will remain the same also.  A resident student will pay approximately $2,500 for housing and meals per semester.

The Board also approved two new MPCC student clubs, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Club and the Gay Straight Alliance Club.

The MPCC system has colleges in North Platte and McCook.
