NebraskaLand Natl. Bank Employees Give Back Through “My Fair Share” Program

nebraskaland-national-bankEmployees at NebraskaLand National Bank are giving back to several North Platte organizations.

Each year, employees at NebraskaLand National Bank nominate various organizations in the community to be recipients of monetary donations contributed by the employees.

The “My Fair Share” program allows the employees of NebraskaLand National Bank to decide what percentage of their contribution will go toward each organization.

This year, bank employees have selected the Rape and Domestic Abuse Program the Bridge of Hope as the recipients.  Employees were able to raise $9,400 to award to the programs.  Past organizations that have received funds include: Creativity Unlimited Arts Council, North Platte Area Children’s Museum, TeamMates, Gift of Hope, the American Cancer Society and the Children’s Advocacy Center.

A total of approximately $47,678 have been donated since the program’s inception in 2004.

Checks will be presented to this year’s recipients at the “My Fair Share Breakfast” on Friday March 8, at 8:30 a.m. in the main bank lobby.  The Bank employees will host the organizations in celebration of the success and accomplishments that these vital agencies provide to North Platte.

Florida Man Steals 400 Gallons of Diesel from Lexington Truck Stop

kirks-neland-truck-stopA Florida man is charged with stealing over 400 gallons of fuel from a Lexington truck stop.

Pedro Casanova-Gomez, 47, of Fort Myers, Florida, was charged in Dawson County Court with theft by deception, a Class III felony.

Dawson County Court records indicate that on January 20, Casanova-Gomez pulled into Kirk’s Nebraskaland Truck Stop at the Lexington I-80 interchange.  He then got out of his vehicle and proceeded to spray an unknown substance on the lens of a security camera.  A short time later, he entered the store, gave the attendant a credit card, and went back to his vehicle to begin fueling

According to authorities, Casanova-Gomez then manipulated the wiring on the fuel pump and began to pump fuel.  Again, he sprayed a substance on the  security camera, then pulled ahead and added fuel to what appeared to be a refrigeration unit on a trailer.  Upon completion, Casanova-Gomez went back into Kirk’s and paid the attendant $39.78 for just over ten gallons of diesel.

After Casanova-Gomez left, employees noticed that the pump was damaged and reviewed their fuel count.  They noticed that they were missing nearly 400 gallons of fuel, with a value of $1,488.  The damage done to the pump totaled $100.

Casanova-Gomez appeared in Dawson County District Court on Tuesday for arraignment.  He is being held on $20,000 bond.

March is Red Cross Month

american-red-crossMarch is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross wants to recognize their “Everyday Heroes” who help their community by giving of themselves.

Shelly Penner ,with the Mid-Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross, wants to thank the volunteers, blood donors, class attendees and financial supporters who help them assist those in need.

Penner also wants to remind people that March is a great time to become a part of the Red Cross by doing things such as developing a preparedness plan for your household, becoming a volunteer, giving blood or taking a class through the Red Cross.

She encourages people to register for a Red Cross Disaster Boot Camp class, download a Red Cross app or attend a Red Cross event.

Last year, the Nebraska/Southwest Iowa Region assisted 17,838 military families, trained 24,649 people in lifesaving skills, and helped 607 families live through devastating fires, floods and severe storms.  The Red Cross provides mental health counseling, shelter, food and clothing to families affected by disasters.

Additionally, Penner says the Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters each year in the United States.  It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families.

The Red Cross is responsible for distributing about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains more than seven million people in first aid, water safety and other life saving skills.

Clara Barton and a circle of her acquaintances founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881.

Former Kimball City Councilman Serving Time for Sexual Assault Now Charged with Theft

Scott Haun
Scott Haun

A former Kimball city councilman serving time for the attempted sexual assault of a teenage boy has been charged with theft.

Scott Haun was charged in Scotts Bluff County earlier this month with theft and abuse of a vulnerable adult.

An arrest affidavit says Haun wrote more than $19,000 in checks on the account of a Kimball woman while serving as her conservator and guardian from September 2006 through June last year. An investigator says much of the money was used to pay Haun’s personal credit card bills.

Haun is serving 14 to 20 years in prison after pleading no contest to the reduced sex assault charge in April. He was sentenced in June.

Custer County Man Killed in Tractor Accident

dennis-seidelA 55-year-old man has died after being run over by a tractor in Custer County.

Sargent Fire Chief Reece Jensen told the Associated Press that Dennis Seidel, of Sargent, was killed Sunday afternoon.

Jensen reports that Seidel was refueling the tractor when he apparently hit the tractor’s starter button. The tractor fired up, slipped into gear and ran over Seidel.

A funeral is scheduled for Friday.

Bianco Selected to North Platte Public Schools Board of Education

Lisa-BiancoThe North Platte Public Schools Board of Education has filled the vacancy left by the resignation of Justin Schwartz last month.

Lisa Bianco was voted onto the Board with a 4-1 vote at Tuesday night’s regular meeting at the McKinley Education Center.

Bianco, George Haws and Pat Bartels were the three candidates for the position.  The Board held a public forum in which the candidates answered questions that had been submitted to the Board.

At the conclusion of the interviews, a motion was made by Kimberley Kaschke and seconded by Julie Nielsen to nominate Bianco to the Board.  Bianco is currently a member of the North Platte Public Schools Foundation and has also been a teacher.

Board member Jack Price was the only “no” vote, but addressed the Board saying his vote was not a reflection of Bianco’s qualifications for the position.

Bianco will be sworn in at the March 12 Board meeting.

Report: Traffic Deaths of Young Drivers Increased Drastically in 2012

govs-highway-safety-associationThere’s some bad news for young drivers and their parents. Teen driving deaths increased 19-percent in the first six months of 2012. That’s more than double the percentage increase of overall traffic deaths, it’s revealed in a new report.

In the first half of 2012, there were 240 highway deaths of 16- and 17-year-old drivers. That’s up from 202 deaths during the same period in 2011, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, based on initial information from their members.

If those figures pan out, it will be the second consecutive year teen driving deaths went up. Driving deaths of 16- and 17-year-old drivers were up three percent in 2011, marking the end of eight consecutive years when they were declining.

Gov. Heineman Blames Congress for Spending Cuts

dave-heinemanNebraska Gov. Dave Heineman is criticizing Congress and President Barack Obama for across-the-board spending cuts rather than targeted reductions.

Heineman released a statement Tuesday saying the federal government should balance its budget by reducing spending, not raising taxes. Heineman says Congress and Obama should have agreed to prioritized cuts, but the Republican governor put most of the blame on the Democratic president.

The governor says Obama should “lead on this issue, instead of playing politics with the daily lives of Americans.”

At issue are $85 billion in indiscriminate federal spending cuts that will begin Friday unless blocked by Congress and the president.

Sen. Ernie Chambers Vows to Filibuster Bill That Would Allow Inmates to Work for Nonprofits

ernie-chambersSen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha is promising a full filibuster to protest a bill that would let Nebraska work-camp inmates work for nonprofit groups.

Chambers slowed the Legislature to a near-standstill on Tuesday with a series of amendments that prevented lawmakers from voting on the bill. Chambers told his colleagues they might as well take the rest of the day off, because he plans to prolong debate for as long as he can.

Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial introduced the bill for the city of McCook, home to Nebraska’s work-ethic camp. Supporters say the bill would help inmates transition back to regular lives. Chambers argues that the bill could allow department officials to coerce inmates into providing free or cheap labor for groups that participate.
