NP Man Goes for Wild Ride, Alcohol Use Suspected

north_platte_patchA North Platte man went for a wild right Sunday night, driving through a Union Pacific fence and over the tracks.

According to a News Release from the North Platte Police Department, Benjamin Fritz, 21, was traveling north on Oak Street when he crossed Front street and drove onto UP property, through a chain link fence and onto the railroad tracks.  Fritz was taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center with what police are calling fairly significant injuries.

The 2010 Nissan Titan Fritz was driving crossed three rows of tracks and flipped when he hit a fourth.  Investigators believe Fritz was driving at a high rate of speed and missed the stop sign at Oak and Front.  It was also discovered that Fritz was driving the vehicle, which belongs to a family member, without permission.

It is also believed that alcohol did play a role in the accident.  Police stated that charges in the incident are forthcoming.

Great Grandsons of Buffalo Bill Killed in Plane Crash

buffalo-billHeirs of a North Platte legend have perished in a plane crash.

Authorities have stated that three people are dead after a small plane crashed in central Florida this week according to a report by the Associated Press.

The bodies of a Winter Haven business man named Rob Krieger, 65, and the great-grandsons of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody were found in the wreckage according to the Associated Press. Buffalo Bill was known for his Wild West shows that toured around the United States in the late 1800’s through the early 1900s.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the Cessna 310 left Okeechobee on Feb. 14. The plane was on its way to Bartow when the FAA lost all contact with it near Fort Pierce at around 4:35 a.m.

The crash site wasn’t discovered until the following morning in a marsh area about 20 miles from Vero Beach. The only way to reach the swampy area is via helicopter or sailboat.

An ALNOT, or alert notice, was issued shortly after it lost contact with the tower according to FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Indian River County Rescue officers were called in at around 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 once the crash site was located. A U.S. Coast Guard called paramedics to the site to remove the victims according to the Associated Press.

The ordeal took several hours to complete, and Assistant Fire Chief Brian Burkeen stated that their crews were still at the accident scene as of 1:30 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board has already started their investigation to determine what caused the crash.

Home Sweet Home Show Kicks Off and Railfest Gets a Big Boost

railfest-donation-2The North Platte Homebuilders Association’s Home Sweet Home Show kicked off with a bang today at the North Platte Quality Inn and Suites.

Prior to the official Opening Ceremony, Nebraskaland National Bank President Michael Jacobson presented the Original Town Association and Railfest with a check for $15,000.  To make the moment even more special, Jacobson announced that Nebraskaland National Bank will be subletting their old North Branch building at 1020 N. Jeffers to the Original Town Association to use as their headquarters.  The rent for the building will be donated by Nebraskaland National Bank according to Jacobson.

Jacobson stated that the location is perfect for such an operation.  The OTA will be able to use the drive-up window for collecting donations and many other things.  He also stated that the building provides the OTA with a secure and functional environment to carry out their day-to-day operations and continue to grow Railfest, which has quickly become a major economic boost for the city of North Platte.

Railfest organizer Dave Harold said the OTA is extremely appreciative, and now has a solid foundation to build and grow Railfest and other events.

Immediately following the check presentation, The Home Show kicked of with the ceremonial Board Cutting, the annual tradition that serves as the official opening of the Home Sweet Home Show.

The show will run February 15 from 4pm-8pm, February 16 from 9am-7pm and February 17 from 10am-4pm.  The show will once again be held at the Quality Inn and Suites and is open to the public.  This years show features Realtors, plumbers, electricians and many more vendors.  Admission to the is $2.00 per person.

Inmates Charged with Possessing Pot in Jail, Put That in Your Pipe and Smoke It

Several inmates were charged with possessing marijuana while they were incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

During the evening hours of February 12, 2013, Detention Officers at the Lincoln County Detention Center discovered a considerable amount of marijuana in the possession of three inmates, all of which were residing in the same cell area.  Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist in the investigation and determine how the pot made it into the cell.

Investigators met with three inmates, Michael Malmkar, Matthew Mollman and Jeffery Denson, Jr.  Malmkar advised that he had found the marijuana in the day area and Mr. Mollman stated that he knew nothing about the contraband in his cell.  Denson then admitted to investigators that he was responsible for the marijuana and that it belonged to him, adding that he had given some to Malmkar and Mollman when they requested it.  He went on to say that he had smuggled the drugs in his rectum until shortly after he was stripped searched at booking, once in the cell he produced the marijuana for the three inmates to share.

Denson was charged with Felony Distribution of Marijuana.  Malmkar and Mollman were each charged with Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana.  The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be brought against the three men.

BREAKING: NP Police Searching for Armed and Dangerous Robbery Suspect

.
Sylvester LeBlanc

UPDATES:

Thursday Feb. 14 10:30pm

The NPPD has not released any new information on this case.  As promised, we will get you updated information as soon as it is available.

Wednesday Feb. 12 4:30pm

Sylvester LeBlanc is still on the run as of Wednesday afternoon.  The Post will continue to update this story as soon as we receive new information.  Check back often for the latest.

Tuesday Feb. 11 10:00pm

As of Tuesday evening at 9:45 pm, Sylvester LeBlanc remained at large.  The North Platte Police Department is asking anyone with any information to contact them.  According to scanner traffic earlier in the day, Officers investigated several potential sightings, but were unable to locate LeBlanc.

_____________________________________________________________

The North Platte Police Department is searching for a robbery suspect on the loose following a robbery late Monday night.

At around 10:30PM on Monday, Officers responded to Kings Trailer Park in the 2400 block of West 9th on the report of a robbery.  Officers learned the suspects, Jeffery Denson, 21, and Sylvester LeBlanc III, 19, had just fled the scene in a dark blue Chrysler 300 with dealer plates.  The victim, a 20-year-old female, alleged that Denson and LeBland were given permission to enter the trailer after asking to use the restroom.  Upon entry, LeBlanc brandished a handgun and demanded money from the victim.  The suspects then stole a small amount of cash and a cellular phone.

Officers were able to locate Denson and another male passenger driving the suspect vehicle near the 1200 block of East 4th.  After conducting an investigation, Officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Denson for Robbery, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony and Terroristic Threats.  Denson was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Authorities are still searching for Sylvester LeBlanc.  LeBlanc is a black male and is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs 160 pounds.  He has brown eyes, black hair and gang tattoos on both arms.  “GD” on his right forearm and “74” on his left arm.  The firearm used in the alleged crime has not been recovered, therefore, LeBlanc should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police want to encourage the public to call the Department’s non-emergency number, (308) 535-6789, with any information on LeBlanc’s whereabouts.  Citizens may also provide anonymous information through the Crime Stoppers website, www.lincolncountycrimestoppers.com or by calling (308) 534-8400 or toll-free at 800-933-TIPS.  Do not try to apprehend the suspect.

Tyler Keup Pleads Not Guilty to Multiple Felony Charges

Tyler Keup
Tyler Keup

Tyler Keup appeared before The Honorable Donald E. Rowlands in Lincoln County District Court today for his arraignment on multiple felony charges.

Keup entered a not guilty plea to Possession of a Controlled Substance-Adderall, two counts of Distribution of Methamphetamine and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Prohibited Person. The charges against Keup stem from a November 25, 2012 arrest following a traffic stop.

Keup’s attorney Gary Krajewski asked Judge Rowlands for a bond reduction, stating that Mr. Keup was “having trouble adjusting to being out of prison, which is why he’s here today.”  Keup was released from prison in 2011 after an appeal because he was 16 when he shot Maricella Martinez and the judge ruled he could not form the intent to kill. He was originally sentenced to 30-60 years, and had served ten years of that sentence when his conviction was reversed and the charge reduced to manslaughter.  He was given credit for time served.

Rowlands denied the request for bond reduction after Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling reminded the court of Keup’s prior criminal history, and the severity of the crime of which he had been convicted.

Krajewski then requested a continuance for discovery and a Status Hearing was set for March 11.
