Guns, Drugs and Money: 4 NP Residents Face Weapons and Drug Charges

A suspicious vehicle observed by an Officer with the North Platte Police Department (NPPD) lead to weapons and drug charges for several North Platte residents.

At around 10:10 PM on February 8th, an Officer from the NPPD observed a suspicious vehicle, a four-door pickup, park and turn its lights off after coming to a stop on a ramp located on property owned by the Nebraska Department of Roads near 13th and Buffalo.  The Officer made contact with the driver, 19-year-old James Foggs.  Also in the vehicle were Kenneth Reed, Jr., 21, Deborah Plunk, 27 and Jeffery Denson Jr., 21.

The suspects became non-compliant and belligerent towards officers on scene and refused to follow their commands.  Officers, due to their experience and training, determined that there was probable cause to believe the suspects had recently used and were in possession of a controlled substance and initiated a search of the vehicle.  During the search, a large kitchen knife was discovered.  Denson and Foggs were arrested and secured in a patrol vehicle without incident, while Reed and Plunk resisted arrest and had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle.

Upon completion of the search, officers had uncovered prescription drugs, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a semi-automatic 9mm hand gun were seized by Officers.

Foggs was charged with Obstruction of Police, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon During the Commission of a Felony.

Plunk was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Accessory to a Felony, Possession of a Concealed Weapon, Obstruction of Police, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Marijuana and 3rd Degree Assault.

Reed was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Accessory to a Felony, Possession of a Concealed Weapon, Obstruction of Police, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Marijuana.

Denson was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Accessory to a Felony, Possession of a Concealed Weapon, Obstruction of Police and Possession of Marijuana.

All four suspects were arrested and processed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

NE Lawmakers Look for Solution to Overcrowded Prisons

ne-state-penThe Legislature’s Judiciary Commission will meet with state corrections officials in the next few weeks to find a solution to Nebraska’s overcrowded prisons.

Nebraska’s nine prisons are at 145 percent of capacity. They were built to handle a total of 3,175 prisoners but currently have more than 4,600.

Sen. Brad Ashford, of Omaha, is chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He says Nebraska could be forced to build a new prison if it doesn’t find a solution to the overcrowding. That could be a result of a lawsuit or an order from a federal judge.

Ashford says one reason for overcrowding is that the prisons have inmates who pose no threat to themselves or others and belong in community-based services.

Mother Nature Reminds Us It’s Still Winter with Powerful Storm

icy-road-neIcy roads and blowing snow plagued most all of Central and Western Nebraska Saturday night into Sunday morning.

While the city of North Platte didn’t take a direct hit from the storm, it packed enough of a punch to force cancellations and postponements of many events and cause some troublesome driving conditions in the city and surrounding areas.

Our neighbors to the north and west received the most snowfall, with up to 10 inches falling in some areas.  Powerful wind gusts up to 57 mph created major drifting problems with some drifts measuring 2-feet to 5-feet deep.  The highest total snowfall was reported about 40 miles northwest of North Platte.

By Sunday evening, streets in North Platte were, for the most part clear with some icy patches.  The Nebraska Department of roads is still urging “extreme caution” on most highways in Northern and Western Nebraska as of late Sunday evening, reporting that blowing snow and  ice continued to be an issue across the State.

No precipitation is expected the rest of the week and high temperatures will be in the 30’s and 40’s.

Snow accumulations of 4 to 12 inches are likely north of a line from Imperial, to North Platte, to O`neill. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are likely south of this line. Winds are expected to gradually diminish Sunday night, however some blowing and drifting snow will be possible in north central Nebraska through early Monday morning.

CDC: Worst of This Year’s Flu Outbreak Over

cdcThe worst of the flu season appears to be nearing an end according to health officials.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of states reporting intense or widespread flu dropped even more last week.  The downward trend started about four weeks ago.  Additionally, reported deaths from the flu have been steadily dropping for the last two weeks.

This year’s flu season started about a month earlier than it has in years past.  The outbreak began in the late fall, and the dominant strain is one that tends to make people sicker.  The CDC reported that this year’s outbreak has been the worst in nine years, and that year proved to be one of the deadliest in recorded history.

Officials have labeled this year’s outbreak as moderately severe.

NE Lawmakers Considering Revision in Juvenile Sentencing Guidelines

jail-cellPrisoners serving life terms for crimes they committed as juveniles would face a new minimum sentence in Nebraska, under a bill set for a hearing in the Legislature.

Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha will present the measure Friday to the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee.

The bill was introduced in the wake of last year’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Miller v. Alabama, which prohibited life-without-parole sentences for crimes committed by juveniles.

In November, the Nebraska Pardons Board scheduled commutation hearings for life-prisoners who committed their crimes as juveniles. A judge later blocked the hearings after advocates raised concerns that the board was trying to subvert the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling.

The bill as-written does not specify a minimum prison term before an inmate becomes eligible for parole.

(UPDATE) Holy Smoke, Fire on Union Pacific Property Creates Huge Plume of Smoke

UPDATE:

rr-fire

According to North Platte Fire officials, yesterday’s fire was caused by an errant spark from a cutting torch being used nearby by a contractor.

______________________________________________________________________________

A fire on property owned by the Union Pacific Railroad created a smokey scene just west of North Platte on Thursday.

At approximately 4:30pm, Post staffers were alerted to a fire just to the west of North Platte.  The fire was located on Union Pacific property just to the south of Highway 30 near the old Taft School building.  Firefighters from North Platte and surrounding areas responded to the scene to find a pile of railroad ties fully engulfed in flames, creating an enormous black plume of smoke.  Fire tankers and other heavy equipment was used in an attempt to bring the fire under control.

Union Pacific and Fire officials on scene declined to comment on the cause of the fire when questioned by the Post, stating that the cause was still under investigation.

According to scanner traffic, fire crews remained on scene as of 10:15pm.

On Thin Ice, Game and Parks Urges Caution on Nebraska Lakes

Thin-IceOfficials with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission are warning those who have plans to embark on a winter fishing expedition to use extreme caution on Nebraska lakes.  The Game and Parks Commission reports that two all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) recently fell through the ice of a northern Nebraska lake.

Conservation officer Heath Packett, of Gordon, says two ATVs carrying three riders broke through the ice on Cottonwood Lake in Cherry County on Monday.  According to Packett, each of the riders safely escaped the frigid water, which was about 8 feet deep at the site of the accident.

Due to the accident, officials have banned the use of ATVs on the lake.  ATV use has also been prohibited on nearby Home Valley Lake.
