A 56-year-old dump truck driver has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in the crash death of a Kearney woman last summer.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Lyle Carman made the plea Wednesday. His trial date has not been set.

Prosecutors say Carman was under the influence of meth on June 7 when his truck struck Raven Addy-Cruz’s car in Interstate 80 in Lincoln. The 23-year-old woman died two days later. Her husband, Edgar Cruz, suffered eight broken ribs. Their 13-month-old daughter, Hazel, was in a car seat and was not injured.

A Nebraska woman accused of prostituting her 7- and 14-year-old daughters has been given up to 20 more years in prison.

The Hastings Tribune says the 36-year-old was sentenced earlier this week in Furnas County District Court to 12 to 20 years for conspiracy to commit a felony.

The woman already had been sentenced in Buffalo County to 80 to 90 years in prison. She’d pleaded no contest and was convicted of conspiracy to commit child sexual assault and of two felony counts of child pornography possession.

The Associated Press is not using her name to protect the identity of the girls. The AP does not usually identify the victims of sex crimes.

The girls’ mother has pleaded no contest to nine similar felony counts in Franklin County.

A 33-year-old western Nebraska man has been given 30 to 48 months in prison for sexually assaulting a child.

Scottsbluff radio station KNEB says Keith Van Winkle, of Minatare, had made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded no contest to reduced charges in Scotts Bluff County District Court.

Van Winkle was given credit for 254 days already served.

He was arrested after a 7-year-old girl told school officials in May about being molested three years earlier.

Chad Hall pleaded not guilty in two cases, one that charges him with Theft by Unlawful Taking of greater than $500 and less than $1,500, a class 4 felony, and another case where he is charged with two felony counts of Possession of a Firearm by Prohibited Person and being a habitual criminal charge, also a felony.

Hall was arrested on January 11^th, 2013 after a warrant executed search led to the discovery of multiple allegedly stolen firearms at Hall’s residency. Hall is a convicted felon.

A request for bond reduction was denied and Hall is due back in court on March 11^th.

Dakota Niles pleaded not guilty in district court to a 1^st Degree Sexual Assault charge and faces the possibility of a 50 year prison sentence if convicted. Niles was arrested on October 9^th after an interview by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies which was sparked by an 14-year-old female minor accusing him of sexual assault on October 8^th. The victim alleges that Niles knew she was 14-years-old when the five allege sexual assaults occurred between spring 2012 and October 6^th 2012.

Niles is charged with the class 2 Felony, out on bond since January 3^rd, 2013, and is due back in court on May 14^th for a jury trial.

Authorities say two people wanted on Texas warrants have been arrested after a high-speed chase that went from western Nebraska into Wyoming and back again.

Jail records say 26-year-old Joshua Carver and 21-year-old Alexandria Pryor remained in Scotts Bluff County custody on Monday. They were arrested Saturday afternoon in the Nebraska Panhandle’s Sioux County.

The chase began when a Mitchell officer tried to stop a car bearing Texas plates. The chase reached upward of 100 mph through two Nebraska counties, into eastern Wyoming and back to Nebraska.

Authorities say the two abandoned the car when it had engine trouble and were soon captured. A loaded handgun, a military-style rifle, ammunition and several knives were found in the car.

Online records don’t list the names of their attorneys.

The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) wants to reward Nebraska students who promote energy efficiency with a new iPad.

The NPPD is sponsoring a contest that asks students to submit a video that cleverly promotes energy efficiency.  Students who would like to compete in the contest, have to produce a 27-second video touting energy efficiency.  The contest is open to all Nebraska students in grades seven through 12, and the submissions will be judged by a panel of industry experts.  The producer of the winning video will receive an iPad.

NPPD’s Chad Johnson says the utility is looking for creative ways to encourage people to save energy.
