Texas Woman Dies Thursday Near Gothenburg On I-80

A 67-year-old Texas woman has died after a semitrailer rammed the back of her van on Interstate 80 in western Nebraska.

Lexington media reports that the accident occurred a little after 8 p.m. Thursday near Gothenburg.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Carol Leonetti, of Irving, Texas, was driving east when she stopped her van. The truck soon stuck the van, knocking it into the median. The truck then crossed into and through the westbound lanes, ending up in a ditch.

No injuries to the truck driver have been reported.

Fundraising Event Organized for NP Infant Stricken with Near SIDS Episode

On May 28, 2012, Kellie Whyte and Matt White experienced one of the true joys in life, the birth of twins, Jaxon Maurice and Zoie Sloane at Great Plains Regional Medical Center (GPRMC) in North Platte.

The twins continued to grow and progress as most babies do. However, on December 1, joy turned to tragedy and devastation. Their father went to feed the twins their bottle and found little Zoie, who had been awake just moments earlier, unresponsive. Matt quickly summoned his wife, Kellie, who performed CPR while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

Doctors at GPRMC were able to stabilize Zoie, who was then flown to Denver Children’s Hospital.

Initially, doctors at Denver Children’s gave the devastated parents a very bleak prognosis stating that Zoie had experienced a “near SIDS” episode, and on December 12, Matt and Kellie were forced to make the decision that no parent ever wants to make, removing their baby girl from life support. As the family waited for the inevitable to happen, Zoie miraculously began breathing on her own and on December 17, they were treated to the most amazing sound possible; the crying of little Zoie.

To the amazement of doctors, Zoie continues to make small improvements. She is currently receiving speech, occupational and physical therapy, and here therapists are thrilled with her accomplishments. However, the road to recovery for Zoie is still a long one.

The family has received a tremendous outpouring of prayers, love and support during this unbelievably difficult time. But, the ordeal has been extremely costly and the family needs your help.

Friends of the family are organizing a fundraising event to assist the family with medical expenses. The event will feature a bake sale, vendor booths and a silent auction, and will be held on Saturday February 2 form 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Knights of Columbus building located at 515 E. 5th in North Platte. Additionally, donations can be made to the Zoie White Fund at Wells Fargo Bank and t-shirts can be purchased at White Tail Screen Print for $15.00. Friends have also established a Facebook page to update the status of Zoie. All proceeds will benefit Zoie and her family.

Lexington Man Facing 10 Years – Failure To Register As A Sex Offender

A Lexington man accused of failing to register as a sex offender faces a federal charge in the case.

A release from the U.S. attorney’s office in Omaha says Santiago Tijerina, also known as Jimmy Ostos or Samuel Jimmy Ostos, is charged in a federal indictment with failure to register as a sex offender in Nebraska between April and December.

Tijerina faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 if convicted.

There is no parole under federal sentencing guidelines.

NE Mother Who Prostituted Young Daughters Gets 80 Years in Prison

An Upland mother who sold her two young daughters into prostitution on Craigslist has been sentenced to a minimum of 80 years in prison.

Michelle Randall, 36, was sentenced in Buffalo County District Court Wednesday to a minimum of 50 years in prison for one count of sexual assault of a child — a Class 2 felony — and 15 to 20 years for each of two counts of possession of child pornography — Class 3 felonies.

Her sentences will run consecutively. Judge John Icenogle gave her credit for the 272 days she has already served.

Randall was convicted of the three felony charges last November after initially pleading ‘no contest.’

Last May, Randall placed a personal ad on Craigslist offering female companionship in the Kearney area, then offered the sexual services of her 14-year-old daughter to an undercover officer posing as a man answering the ad. She also arranged for multiple men to have sex with her 7-year-old daughter in exchange for cash on several occasions.

That’s something Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton says he can’t imagine a parent doing to the one person they’re supposed to protect.

“We do not put them in harms way, we do not expose them to sexual abuse, we do not expose them to people that may harm them,” he said, “and when somebody does that, it’s an aberration, and those people need to be held accountable to the highest standard. We should really not hand out mercy to the people that prey on our children or who assist those who prey on our children.”

Randall was convicted of nine similar felony counts — including five counts of visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct by a minor, two counts of human trafficking and two counts of child abuse — last November in Franklin County after making a plea deal.

Randall’s attorney said the plea deal was the best possible option for her client to avoid possible federal charges and additional charges in four other counties where the crimes occurred.

“The reason really that she decided to enter into this agreement is that it resolved all of those [possible charges] all in one fell swoop essentially, rather than potentially having trials in five different counties, as well as federal court,” attorney Tana Fye said.

Five men are also charged in the case for allegedly having sex with the young girls.

Logan Roepke, 22, of McCook; Donald Grafe, 37, of Columbus; Shad Chandler, 41, and Brian McCarthy, 33, both of Lincoln; and 28–year–old Alex Rahe, of Omaha, are each charged with first–degree sexual assault of a child.

Roepke and Chandler were both convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child in separate courtrooms Tuesday, after entering ‘no contest’ and ‘guilty’ pleas, respectively. Chandler initially pleaded ‘not guilty,’ but changed his plea Tuesday.

Roepke will be sentenced in Buffalo County District Court Feb. 28. Chandler’s sentencing is set for April 2 in Lancaster County District Court.

As for Randall, the mother of four has had three of her children taken away from her and placed in protective custody.

“Her children have been placed in foster care, and so they’re in foster homes here in Nebraska right now,” Fye said.

Randall will be eligible for parole in approximately 38 years, at the age of 74.

She will be sentenced in Furnas and Franklin Counties next month.

NP Man Arrested For DUI & Alleged Bumper Car Fun Ride

At around 3:15 AM on January 20^th an Officer from the NPPD responded to the 2300 block of W. Philip on the report of a hit and run. Officers learned that a red two door vehicle had hit a pickup and then collided with a residence. The suspect vehicle was last seen southbound on Buffalo Bill Ave after reportedly striking a second vehicle near the 900 block of Buffalo. Officers were able to locate and follow fluid trail leading south on Buffalo from the scene. Officers located the suspect driver, Benjamin Beauvais near Eugene and S. Buffalo Bill. A red, 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva was discovered to have left the roadway and into a field south and west of the Buffalo Bill Overpass.

Following the investigation Officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Beauvais for Driving Under the Influence, 60-6,196 (1^st Offense less than .15, W Mis) and 2 counts Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage accident, 60-696 (II Mis). He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Damages to the residence were estimated at over $10,000.00 and the Oldsmobile was a total lose. Police also had contact with the registered owner of the Oldsmobile, Cody Sabel, and he was cited for No Proof of Insurance.

20 YO NP Man Suspected Of Having An Intimate Relationship With A 15 YO Girl

On Saturday, January 20^th, a 20-year-old North Platte man was arrested under suspicion of being in an intimate relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Authorities responded to the report of a 15-year-old girl who ran away from her home shortly before midnight and that she was possibly with suspect, Cole Picotte, near the 1900 block of W.4^th Street.

According to the North Platte Police Department, the two individuals weren’t located immediately but officers made contact with the two later that evening.

An investigation determined that there was probable cause to arrest Picotte for being in an intimate relationship with the female juvenile. Officers arrested Picotte and charged him with 1^st Degree Sexual Assault and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Picotte was booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center.

One Of Four Finalists To Become Dean Of The Nebraska College Of Technical Agriculture

Interviews are scheduled for four finalists who want to become the next dean of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.

The candidates are Peter Camfield, dean of the School of Agriculture at Oklahoma Panhandle State University; Dann Husmann, a professor and associate dean at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Ron Rosati, the provost of Southeast Missouri State University; and Jack Whittier, a professor and extension beef specialist at Colorado State University.

The candidates are vying to replace Weldon Sleight, who retired in December.

The interviews will include sessions on the college’s campus in North Platte. A full schedule of interviews and more information about each candidate are available on the college’s website.

SD Woman Charged In The Death Of Custer County Infant

A woman prohibited from practicing as a midwife in Nebraska and South Dakota has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of an infant.

Lexington media reports that 65-year-old Judy K. Jones was arraigned last week in Custer County Court in Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Jones, of Irene, S.D., helped deliver a baby in rural Custer County in September 2011. The child, Eli Fenske, started having medical problems shortly after he was born, but investigators say Jones failed to perform follow-up tests and did not contact a doctor when the child stopped breathing.

Nebraska authorities say Jones was ordered to stop practicing medicine in 1999. South Dakota authorities issued a similar order.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 21.
