LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is taking a wait-and-see approach on whether legislation is needed to begin collecting online sales taxes after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Ricketts said Wednesday he still doesn’t think legislation is necessary, but urged patience in the wake of the ruling that allows states to require that remote sellers collect the tax. He says he wants to see how other states address the matter as the ruling goes into effect.

Nebraska currently requires residents to report their online purchases for tax purposes when they file their income tax returns, but few people comply. Nebraska loses an estimated $30 million to $40 million annually in state revenue from sales that aren’t reported.

It’s unclear whether the Nebraska Department of Revenue can collect the tax without legislative approval.

The list announced Wednesday includes new initiatives to improve birth outcomes in Nebraska, address prescription opioid abuse and reduce turnover among child welfare workers.

Other initiatives are continuing from the previous year, including maintaining the recent improvements made at ACCESS Nebraska, a service that helps Nebraskans apply for and renew public benefits.

Gov. Pete Ricketts says the business plan is part of his efforts to make the agency more efficient and responsive to the public.

The new plan covers the current fiscal year that began on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2019.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 32-year-old Christopher Humphries, of Denver, and 31-year-old Jaclyn Greer-Humphries, of Fort Collins, were arrested July 5 after officers searched their residence in Sidney. The patrol says investigators found counterfeit money and items being used to make the fake cash.

Both are charged with forgery and criminal possession of forgery devices. Humphries also is charged with terroristic threats. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press. A phone listed for her attorney rang unanswered during several calls seeking comment.

Both are due back in court Friday for a preliminary hearing.

Judge Randin Roland filed a verdict of not guilty last week for Garden County Schools Superintendent Paula Sissel, who’d been charged with misdemeanor assault in Garden County. He’d considered testimony and evidence from a nonjury trial last month in Oshkosh.

A video of the Nov. 13 incident shows Sissel pulling the girl down a hallway before the girl’s placed in what was referred to as a “chill out room.” It’s alleged the girl suffered a rug burn.

Sissel acknowledged pulling the girl, in part to protect a physical therapist who was trying to deal with the girl’s outburst. The girl’s mother says the girl is possibly autistic and functions at the level of a 3- or 4-year-old.

In a ruling released Tuesday the court agreed with a Keith County judge that the boy’s case shouldn’t be moved to juvenile court as he’d requested. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Prosecutors say the boy was 15 when he stabbed to death 25-year-old John Fratis in Ogallala on March 28, 2017. He’s pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

His attorney, Maren Chaloupka, said Tuesday that she and her client will be discussing whether to appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of state Sen. Lydia Brasch, of Bancroft, and former state Sen. Mark Christensen, of Imperial. Both are Republicans who have opposed Medicaid expansion bills in the Legislature.

The lawsuit argues that the petition violates Nebraska’s Constitution as well as a law that dictates how state money can be spent.

The petition drive’s campaign manager, Meg Mandy, says the lawsuit is “clearly a desperate attempt to block the people’s ability to voice their opinion on this issue and ensure affordable health care for 90,000 Nebraskans.”

Doane University sold its 320-acre (130-hectare) Fillmore County property to soybean farmers in April. Conservationists and animal lovers had criticized the more than $2.6 million sale of the Aldrich Prairie Research Site for endangering the prairie dog colony.

The land had been used for student research into prairie dog behavior for years. Maureen Franklin, Doane’s former vice president for academic affairs, had said in a letter to the university that its decision not to protect the prairie dogs was “academically short-sighted and not in keeping” with the school’s ethical values.

Conservation groups Nebraska Wildlife Rehabilitation and Audubon of Kansas oversaw about 30 volunteers who trapped and relocated the prairie dogs to Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary near Bassett last month.

The Prairie Dog Coalition of Boulder, Colorado trained volunteers on how to properly handle the animals, said Laura Stastny, executive director of Nebraska Wildlife. The process involves baiting small cage-traps with sweet horse feed.

Stastny said the rescued animals are integrating well into their new sanctuary and consolidating into family groups.

The project cost an estimated total of $35,000, Stastny said. The university donated $20,000 to the cause.

Nebraska Wildlife will keep about 50 young prairie dogs at its Fort Calhoun facility until August.

Stastny said prairie dogs are often seen as a nuisance, but are key to prairie ecosystems. Prairie dogs serve as prey to badgers and hawks, as well as homemakers for insects, squirrels and burrowing owls, she said.

“A lot of states kind of villainize prairie dogs, so their colonies are being eradicated,” she said. “But they are an exemplar of the interconnectiveness of nature.”
