City Ordinance Created in 1975 Banned!

NORTH PLATTE Neb. – On Tuesday a decision was made among the City Council at City Hall that most concerned citizens are happy with.

The city ordinance was created in 1975 banned conceal and carry in city parks. When signs banning conceal and carry made their first sudden appearance, citizens of North Platte began to voice their concern.

On August 7th Council Member James Carman moved to repeal the ordinance. The issue was tabled, and was repealed on the following meeting August 21st on a vote from 6-2.

Cougar spotted near elementary school,then killed

KIMBALL, Neb. (AP) — Officials have killed a cougar that was spotted in a tree just a few blocks from an elementary school on the east side of Kimball in the Nebraska Panhandle.

The animal was seen Saturday by a man who lives in the area, across U.S. Highway 30 from Gotte Park and a few blocks north of Mary Lynch Elementary.

A Nebraska Game and Parks officer tranquilized the 90-pound male. It was removed from the tree and then euthanized.

Police Chief Mark Simpson says the public was in danger because the cougar was inside city limits. Sam Wilson, of Nebraska Game and Parks, says the cougar was euthanized under the agency’s policy on cougars that enter a community.

Cougars also are called mountain lions or pumas.

Authorities respond, juvenile steps in with violence

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – Officers from North Platte Police Department dealt with a case of a violent juvenile on Friday August 17th. The NPPD responded to a home on the 2300 Block of West 16th St after receiving a report of a verbal disturbance.

When officers arrived they made contact with the 39-year-old female victim who said she got into an argument with the angry suspect 44 year old Belden Cushing over a cell phone. When the victim tried to leave but Cushing wouldn’t let her go. At that time a juvenile stepped in striking the female victim many times almost ripping her shirt right off her body. The victim told officers that Cushing didn’t even try to stop the juvenile from attacking her.

Officers tried to talk with the juvenile, but immediately the juvenile turned aggressive and violent. The officers had to restrain the child as they were out of control.The juvenile, a ward of the state, was transported to the police station to meet with NE DHHS CPS Caseworkers. The NPPD officers determined there was probable cause to arrest the juvenile for 3rd Degree Assault, Attempted 3rd Degree Assault on an Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

The juvenile was then released into the custody of HHS Caseworkers. Belden was cited for 2nd Degree False Imprisonment, False Reporting and Contributing Delinquency of Minor.

Lady Antebellum to perform at Nebraska Land Days 2013

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – Excitement around Nebraska Land Days 2013 is already in the air!

It was announced Monday August 20th that Lady Antebellum will perform in North Platte in The US Cellular Summer Jam Concert as part of their 2013 tour. Lady Antebellum will perform on June 21st 2013 at the Wild West Area in part of Nebraska Land Days.

Man abuses two month old son, son recovering

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A plea agreement has been reached with a 34-year-old Scottsbluff man charged with the physical abuse of his two-month old son.

Nathan Pace entered a no contest plea to intentional child abuse, a felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

The agreement was reached Wednesday.

Authorities say Pace injured the infant in February. The child was transferred to a Denver hospital with serious head injuries. Pace was arrested after doctors said the injuries were not accidental.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner says while the child’s injuries initially appeared serious, he recovered quickly and is back home from the hospital.

Warner says the mother told him recently the child is doing well and his development is on par with his twin.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — The Beyond Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program has scheduled a birding event at the Wildcat Hills Nature Center in the Nebraska Panhandle.

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Sept. 15.

The center sits about eight miles south of Scottsbluff.

Intermittent Phone Service At Library (Letters to The Post)

NORTH PLATTE, Neb-Persons trying to call the North Platte Public Library on Thursday, August 23rd and possibly Friday, August 24th, may experience difficulty reaching the Library. During these days, the North Platte Public Library will be switching over to a new telephone system. These issues affect only the North Platte Public Library telephone service and will not affect any other services.

The Library will be open regular summer hours 9am-9pm on August 23rd and 9am-6pm on August 24th and 25th. Persons needing to contact the library are urged to either come to the Library during business hours or access the North Platte Public Library online at:www.ci.north-platte.ne.us/library.
