Street walking salesman selling magazine subscriptions is a scam, soon to be in your neighborhood?

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Police in Gering are warning residents about an alleged magazine subscription scam.

A man and woman were canvassing neighborhoods in the western Nebraska city, selling magazines without a local permit.

Residents who believe they were scammed say the man asks them to buy magazine subscriptions for military members overseas, and claims that part of the money will help Gering High School students travel to Italy. The salesman requests that checks be written to HP Consulting, which authorities have identified as a scam.

Gering Police Captain Jason Rogers says the couple was seen traveling in a white van with Colorado license plates

Fire once sparked by lightning, rekindled and burns nearly 200 acres

HARRISBURG, Neb. (AP) — Members of a rural western Nebraska fire department are keeping watch over an area where a fire rekindled and burned nearly 200 acres.

The Banner County fire department was monitoring an area two miles south of the border of Scotts Bluff and Banner counties.

Fire Chief Tim Grubbs says the fire is located in rough country about a mile west of Highway 71. He says the fire is one of five small blazes caused by lighting. Firefighters spent nine hours at the scene on Thursday, and were called back out Friday afternoon.

Grubbs says he’d rather watch the fire in abundance of caution, so officials don’t have to come back out if it grows larger and out of control.

Authority’s log on disarming Colorado Cinema Shooter

Updated at 1:53 p.m. on July, 21, 2012

·         We have been successful in disabling a second triggering device through a controlled detonation.

·         Although NOT certain – we are hopeful we have eliminated the remaining major threats.

·         However, we will not know for sure until we enter the apartment.

·         Many hazards remain inside. We will continue to be at this location for hours collecting evidence and mitigating

those hazards.

·         In the event that more triggering devices are found, there is a possibility of more controlled disruptions to occur.

·         Official updates will continue to come through our twitter account (@aurorapd).

·         More information on today’s operation on Paris Street will be addressed at the 2:00 pm.

  3. Continue the investigation with the Aurora Police Department being the lead agency and assisted by numerous other agencies.

New Safety Program Awards Bucks to Drivers Who Buckle Up

Lincoln, Neb., – Bucks for Buckles, a new seat belt awareness campaign aimed at
encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up while driving, will be launched this summer in selected counties across Nebraska. The campaign is a joint program of the Nebraska Safety Council and State Farm.“The single most effective means of protecting the lives of you and your passengers is wearing seat belts

and using appropriate child restraints every time you ride in a vehicle,” said Laurie Klosterboer, executive director of the Nebraska Safety Council. “The Bucks for Buckles campaign is a fun, rewarding way to help Nebraskans get the message that seat belts save lives.”

Of the 55 passenger vehicle fatalities recorded in Nebraska in the first five months of 2012, 43 or 78 percent of those fatally injured were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Klosterboer said. A total of 34, or 78 percent, of those unbelted victims were thrown from the vehicle during the crash.

Bucks for Buckles hopes to help remind people how easy it is to save lives. The campaign sponsors will
connect with drivers at selected times and locations and award $1 coins to drivers who are securely buckled
in their seat belt. Those riding unrestrained will be offered educational materials about the effectiveness of
seat belts in saving lives and reducing injuries.
Bucks for Buckles will be implemented in 9 Nebraska counties in July and August. The times, dates and
locations where dollar coins will be distributed will not be announced in advance to maintain the element of
surprise. The counties selected for the campaign are Madison, Platte, Lincoln, Saline, Gage, Scotts Bluff,
Custer, Dawson and Otoe.

“These counties were selected based on their historically low seat belt usage,” Klosterboer said. “Nebraska’s
overall seat belt usage rate is 84 percent, but usage in these counties ranges from 50 to 75 percent.”
