AURORA, Colo. (AP) — A gunman opened fire early Friday at a suburban Denver movie theater on the opening night of the latest Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

The gunman, who is in custody, stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora.

“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.

Officers came running in and telling people to leave the theater, Salina Jordan told the Denver Post. She said some police were carrying and dragging bodies.

Officers later found the gunman near a car behind the theater.

“A gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon (were) found inside,” he said.

The suspect was taken into custody, but no name was released. Oates said there’s no evidence of any other attackers. There was also no immediate word of any motive.

The suspect spoke of “possible explosives in his residence. We are dealing with that potential threat,” Oates said

Police were at the Denver-area apartment and had evacuated other residents of the building. Oates did not say whether any explosives had been found.

He said police also checked for explosives in the parking lot and at the Century 16 theater and secured those areas.

Moviegoers spoke of their terror as violence erupted and people around them fell victim.

Bejamin Fernandez, 30, told the Post that he heard a series of explosions. He said that people ran from the theater and there were gunshots as police shouted “get down!”

Frenandez said he saw people falling, including one young girl.

Jordan told the paper that one girl was struck in cheek, others in stomach including a girl who looked to be around 9-years-old.

Jordan said it sounded like firecrackers until someone ran into Theater 8 yelling “they’re shooting out here!”

Hayden Miller said that he heard several shots.

“Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station.

Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw “people hunched over leaving theater.”

The police chief said 10 victims died at the theater and four at area hospitals.

At least 24 people were being treated at Denver area hospitals.

Eleven people were being treated at the Medical Center of Aurora for gunshots and ranged from minor to critical condition. Two others walked in to be treated for tear gas contamination.

Denver Health had seven victims — one in critical and the rest in fair condition.

The youngest victim reported was a 6-year-old being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where a total of six victims were taken. Their condition wasn’t known.

Two people in critical condition were rushed to nearby Swedish Medical Center, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.

Aurora is on Denver’s east side and is Colorado’s third-largest city with 327,000 residents. It is home to a large Defense Department satellite intelligence operation at Buckley Air Force Base, as well as The Children’s Hospital, the University of Colorado Hospital and a future Veterans Affairs hospital.

A Wyoming man that killed Colorado man in Nebraska receives life behind bars

KIMBALL, Neb. (AP) — A Wyoming man convicted of killing a Colorado man whose body was found in western Nebraska faces a sentence of life in prison.

Vencil Ash III, of Cheyenne, Wyo., was convicted of first-degree murder earlier this month in Kimball County District Court. He was charged with killing Ryan Guitron, of Fort Collins, Colo., in 2003. His remains were found at an abandoned farm near Bushnell in 2010.

The attorney general’s office, which prosecuted the case, didn’t pursue the death penalty and Ash will receive life in prison. Sentencing is Aug. 21.

Authorities believe Ash took Guitron to an abandoned farm, shot him and buried him in a woodpile.

Ash’s girlfriend, Kelly Meehan, is also charged with first-degree murder. Her case is pending.

New Nation-Wide Store Joining The Platte River Mall Family!

North Platte Neb.-Platte River Mall Management recently announced that the national retailer, rue21, will soon be opening in North Platte. rue21 offers a broad assortment of fashion trends in apparel and accessories for girls and guys. rue21 considers their stores young, fresh, and affordable. “rue” comes from the French word for “street” while “21” represents the age that everyone wants to be!

As of May 30, 2012, rue21 stated they operated 810 stores. The company is headquartered out of Warrendale, Pennsylvania and has stores located in 46 states. The closest rue21 store to North Platte is in Grand Island. Clarine Eickhoff, mall property manager’s remarks, “rue21 is a progressive company.

The corporate website lists 24 stores opening soon with our location still needing to be added. They are a company that is completely focused on a younger market. I believe the mix rue21 will add to the Platte River Mall will add additional energy and of course fill a portion of one of our much larger spaces. When complete, rue21 will occupy 4,800 sq. ft and will be in the north end of the mall near Famous Footwear. Construction is slated to begin this week with a late October opening if all goes as planned.

North Platte subcontractors will be working on the project and the general is Jim Wood Construction out of Arkansas. Wood Construction has done several build outs for rue21s and due to the aggressive timeline of the store opening we are needing an efficient process that rue21 is comfortable with.” The rue21 new store announcement follows last weeks announcement that Maurices temporarily relocated in the mall while their store is getting a full remodel.

Construction is to begin this week as well. “Progressive changes are happening,” Eickhoff added, “Conversations we have had with other retailers have lead us to believe that rue21 will be a catalyst for additional retail growth. Will others follow rue21 to North Platte? You know we can never know at this point. As a mall we are extremely optimistic. Mall ownership finalized the lease on July 3 rd after almost a year of negotiations. This was never a done deal at any point.

Leasing is a volatile process that requires patience, commitment and investment. When retailers such as this add options, tax revenue, and economic influence to a community, it is a huge accomplishment. Our Ownership has made a very important decision for North Platte and I can not be more pleased.”
