Weekend fires threaten few homes

NORTH PLATTE Neb-The pre Fourth of July weekend brought a few minor blazes endangering few homes, and putting some dry grass and trees up in smoke

Source: Anonymous

Sunday about 1PM a grass fire threatened two houses and an out building. The fire lit 80 acres of trees and 20 acres of grassland.

Fire fighters put out the flames before any structural damage occurred. North Platte Firefighters received aid from Hershey, Wallace, and Sutherland Fire Departments.  The Nebraska Department of Roads and local land owners also helped crews extinguish the flames.

Cause of the fire is undetermined.

Another fire burning weed stubble occurred near Highway 83 and Kaneb Road at about 8:00PM taking crews 30 minutes to put out.
“We want to caution everyone to take caution” says Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Thompson of North Platte Fire Department.  “Have water close by when lighting fireworks, don’t light them near dry grass or trees, just use common sense and be as safe as we can with this stuff”

Fly your flag over this July Fourth holiday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale is urging state residents to fly the U.S. flag during the July Fourth holiday.

Gale says displaying the flag can help people “reflect on the benefits and responsibilities of being an American.”

Gale’s office is also reminding residents that they can have U.S. and Nebraska flags flown at the State Capitol throughout the year in recognition of individuals, accomplishments and special occasions. Flags flown at the Capitol are accompanied by a keepsake certificate signed by Gale detailing the date and purpose of the flight.

Those interested must provide the flag, deliver it to Gale’s office and provide information on why the flag is being flown.

The flags are flown at the Capitol on Monday through Friday, but not on holidays.

Search for missing swimmer continues

BURWELL, Neb. (AP) — The search for a 19-year-old Columbus man has resumed at Calamus Reservoir in central Nebraska.

Local media reports that divers were using sonar Friday morning as they looked for Richard Tucker or his body.

Authorities say Tucker had been missing since about 12:30 p.m. Thursday when he jumped from his family’s boat to swim to the beach.

Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall told the newspaper that he couldn’t confirm that there’d been a drowning, but he said he suspected as much.

The reservoir and recreation area are seven miles northwest of Burwell.

Crandall says family members didn’t see any signs that Tucker was in any distress.

Shelly Penner of the American Red Cross in North Platte served ice cream to all who came to the social wish a happy bright attitude. “As we speak our emergency response vehicle known as an ERV,  deployed with volunteers to go to Colorado. We have four more emergency response vehicles in Nebraska at Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and in North Platte. All four are on their way to Colorado to help our Red Cross family there.
