NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A 30-year-old North Platte man has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison on a drug conspiracy conviction.
Prosecutors say Victor Jimenez-Lopez was sentenced earlier this week for conspiracy to possess methamphetamine for sale. He must serve five years of supervised release when he leaves prison.
Jimenez-Lopez told investigators in November that he’d been making trips to Phoenix since January 2011 so he could bring back meth to Nebraska.

The Supreme Court has upheld the heart of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul — ruling in favor of the requirement that most Americans can be required to have health insurance, or else pay a penalty.
The decision means the historic overhaul will continue to take effect over the next several years, affecting the way countless Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care.
The ruling also hands President Barack Obama a campaign-season victory.
The court found problems with the law’s expansion of Medicaid. But even there, it said the expansion could proceed as long as the federal government does not threaten to withhold the entire Medicaid allotment to states if they don’t take part in the extension.
The court’s four liberal justices, Stephen Bryer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, joined Roberts in the outcome.

NORTH PLATTE (NSP) Deanna Fischer was arrested today for an additional charge of sexual assault on a child dating back prior to 2011.
This new charge stems from a child victim who was interviewed in 2011 and disclosed that Deanna Fischer had grabbed and fondled him while wrestling.
Deanna Fischer turned herself in to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on 06/26/12, she was allowed to have a new bond run concurrently with the prior bond by posting an additional $ 2,500.00. She is currently out on a $ 250,000.00 bond and facing multiple counts of child sexual assault.

The Rotary Club had a very special guest join their weekly meeting today, Chancellor Maurer, award-winning medical scientist of The University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Maurer is a Rotary member himself. 
” Tomorrow we will learn about what the supreme courts decision is about Obama care. Regardless of the outcome there is significant interest in what is going to happen to health care in the united states.” He said as he discussed the important issues of health in America.
Dr. Maurer was also in Sidney earlier Wednesday.
Wednesday hardworking volunteers attended the swearing in process while receiving their certification. These volunteers will work with children who are undergoing the process of recovery from abuse, through companionship with the child, and working with the judge to determine what will be best for the child while they undergo the legal process.
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, a volunteer program where a judge will appoint a volunteer to a child suffering from neglect or abuse to help the child get through the overburdened legal process.
The CASA Volunteers you see here are Jeanie Gilbert, Barb Mcintosh, Michelle Grier, Tony Martinez, Rebecca Steele, Pat Cooper, and Dawn Lydic.
All of the volunteers take a special pride in helping these children. “I see alot of people out there lacking in priority skills, or don’t have an understanding of what abuse and neglect is all about. With their actions they can pout themselves in harms way , I defiantly want to be a strong voice for those children that do not have a voice within thew court system or within their families.” says Tony Martinez, a new sworn in volunteer.
Last year, more than 75,000 CASA volunteers helped 240,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes.
OMAHA, Neb. (June 25, 2012) – The American Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June. This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.
The Red Cross is calling on all eligible blood donors – now more than ever – to roll up a sleeve and give as soon as possible. All blood types are needed, but especially O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative, in order to meet patient demand this summer.
An unseasonably early start to spring may be a contributing factor to this year’s decrease in donations. Many regular donors got an early start on summer activities and aren’t taking time to give blood or platelets. In addition, this year’s mid-week Independence Day holiday has reduced the number of scheduled Red Cross blood drives. Many sponsors, especially businesses, are unable to host drives because employees are taking extended vacations.
Unfortunately, patients don’t get a holiday from needing blood products. The need is constant. Every two seconds, someone in theUnited Statesneeds a blood transfusion. Blood and platelets are needed for many different reasons, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, premature babies – when there are complications during childbirth – and for patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease.
“Every day, the Red Cross must collect more than 17,000 pints of blood for patients at more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. Of that, the Midwest Blood Services Region must collect approximately 500 pints per day,” said Tricia Quinn, CEO of the American Red Cross Midwest Blood Services Region, serving Nebraska, western Iowaand parts of Coloradoand Kansas. “We need donors to make appointments in the coming days and weeks to help us ensure that all patient blood needs can be met. Each pint of whole blood can help save more than one life.”
“There is always the chance that a physician could postpone an elective surgery if the needed blood products aren’t readily available or, in a worst case scenario, have to forego a more serious procedure because of a shortage of blood.” Quinn added. “Our goal is to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. North Platte (CITY OF NORTH PLATTE PUBLIC SERVICE DEPARTMENT)- Due to the new city bus barn construction, close proximity to ball fields, parks and the shrinking size of the area available at 1402 North Jeffers; the free excess yard wastes and tree debris drop-off site at 1402 North Jeffers will be closed permanently on Friday June 29th, 2012 at 4 p.m.
After that date all excess yard waste and tree debris must be taken to the city transfer station/compost site located near the inlet at Lake Maloney. Residents with city refuse collection may drop-off their excess yard waste/tree debris free of charge. Normal tipping fees will be charged to commercial/for-hire generators/contractors.
The city’s transfer station/composite site is open 7a.m. to 4.p.m. Monday through Saturday. All drop-offs of yard waste/tree debris or any other refuse can only be made at those times/days
