Manly men “Walk a Mile”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post) – The “ladies” were out in full force this morning in downtown North Platte. Many brave men stepped out donning women’s attire, shoes and some even flaunted hats- all for a good cause.
A crowd gathered at Nebraskaland National Bank for the 7th Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to raise money for the Rape & Domestic Abuse program in North Platte. Several individuals and teams collaborated for the men’s march to stop sexual assault- some wearing their own creations; some had their shoes chosen for them, depending on whether or not they had volunteered themselves for the event.
Foot massages and lunch followed for the participants.

Lexington man charged with child sexual assault

Derrick Orvis

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) – A 26-year-old Lexington man is facing two counts of sexually assaulting a child in nearby Phelps County in 2010.
Derrick Orvis was arrested Wednesday.
Phelps County court records say Orvis is believed to have sexually assaulted a child twice during the summer of 2010. The child was between the ages of 12 and 16, but details of the crimes were unavailable because some court records are sealed.
Orvis is a registered sex offender because he was convicted last year of attempted sexual assault of a child in Colorado.
The Nebraska State Patrol says it is investigating similar allegations against Orvis in Chase County.
Orvis is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail, and court records do not show an attorney listed to represent him.

Two GI men busted near Brady for pot possession with intent

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post) – Two Grand Island men were arrested early this week after an alert deputy and K-9 unit cut their trip short at the Brady I-80 rest area.
20 year old Estid Barrios and 19 year old Matthew Thomas, both of Grand Island, were stopped for littering late Monday night. The deputy smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and the two men presented him with a small amount of pot. Unconvinced that was all the weed in the SUV, the deputy called in the LCSO Canine Unit.
Upon investigation, K9 Zeigo indicated that more drugs were present and a search uncovered 4 pounds of suspected high-quality marijuana.
Other items of suspected controlled substances were also found and more charges against the two men are possible.
Barrios is free on bond; Thomas remains in the Lincoln County Jail.

Minnesota fugitive arrested in North Platte

Michael Rannow

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A Minnesota fugitive has been arrested in western Nebraska.
Police say 44-year-old Michael Rannow was taken from his van in a parking lot just south of Interstate 80 in North Platte on Wednesday night.
North Platte officer Troy Erickson says Nebraska agencies had been notified about Minnesota’s warrants for Rannow and that he likely was using I-80, headed to or from Denver.
Erickson says an officer spotted the van Rannow was using, parked near two truck stops.
Erickson says a search warrant was obtained before officers broke the van windows and got access inside to seize Rannow.
Lincoln County jail records say Rannow remains in custody, pending proceedings to return him to Minnesota. The charges there include sexual assault and failure to register as a sex offender.

Neb. lawmakers approve mountain lion hunting bill

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska lawmakers have passed a bill that would allow for mountain lion hunting and the donation of deer meat to help the hungry.
The combined proposals won final approval Thursday, 49-0.
Ellsworth Sen. LeRoy Louden introduced the mountain lion hunting bill in response to increased sightings in Nebraska. Current state law only allows people to kill mountain lions if they are threatening humans or livestock.
That measure was combined with a deer meat donation proposal by Lincoln Sen. Tony Fulton. It would require the state Game and Parks Commission to create a program that allows hunters to donate money and deer meat to the Hunters Helping the Hungry Cash Fund. The bill is LB928.

Broken Bow man held in shooting of patrol vehicle

BROKEN BOW, Neb. (AP) – A 35-year-old man has surrendered to authorities to face charges that he shot at an unoccupied Custer County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle last month.
Trent Esch, of Broken Bow, turned himself in at the county jail in Broken Bow on Tuesday.
Esch faces felony charges of criminal mischief and using a firearm to commit a felony. A jailer said Esch remained in custody on Thursday, pending $5 million bail. His attorney in a recent case didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
The sport utility vehicle was hit by several bullets when it was parked at a deputy’s Broken Bow home on March 18. The sheriff’s office says no one was injured.

Officials: Lincoln County tornado disaster aid unlikely

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A county official says Lincoln County has fallen well below federal minimums to get disaster help in recovering from four tornadoes that struck last month.
The tornadoes that struck near North Platte on March 18 caused at least $2.1 million damage and prompted Lincoln County to declare a disaster.
But county emergency manager Dan Guenthner told the Board of Commissioners earlier this week that one of the criteria for aid is that 177-200 homes be destroyed. Two homes and some farm buildings have been listed as destroyed, and 10 more homes were damaged. At least four people were injured.
Also, the county won’t seek help from the governor’s emergency fund because no public infrastructure was destroyed.
