Heat still a problem for livestock in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the heat and humidity continue to cause livestock deaths in Nebraska, while the growing number of grasshoppers is becoming a problem. The USDA in its weekly crop report on Monday says temperatures last week averaged 2 degrees above normal, with highs mainly in the mid to upper 90s. Rainfall was heaviest in the eastern Panhandle and the south central region, with about 3.5 inches. The northern two thirds of Nebraska were dry, and grasshopper numbers are becoming a concern in parts of western Nebraska. The USDA says 79 percent of the corn crop and 78 percent of the soybeans are in good to excellent shape. The wheat harvest is nearly finished along with the second cutting of alfalfa.

Neb. Guardsman among those killed in Afghan crash
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A fallen Nebraska National Guard member had only been in Afghanistan a week or so before being killed in a helicopter crash. Sgt. Patrick Hamburger was among 30 Americans killed when a U.S. military helicopter was shot down Saturday in eastern Afghanistan. The 30-year-old Hamburger was a native of Lincoln and lived in Grand Island. Military officials have not released the names of those killed but Hamburger’s family confirmed his death. His brother Chris says Hamburger arrived in Afghanistan less than two weeks ago. He says Hamburger didn’t have to go but wanted to because the rest of his unit was going. He says it’s not surprising his brother died trying to help his unit because he’s always been protective of his family and friends.

Series of Neb. events draw attention to pipeline
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Opponents of a proposed pipeline that would carry Canadian tar sands oil through Nebraska on its way refineries near the Gulf of Mexico are holding a series of events to draw attention to the plan. The Stand with Randy series begins Friday and continues through Sunday in Nebraska. The event’s website lists 24 events, including book drives, talks, a bike ride, poetry readings and concerts. Most events are in Lincoln. The series is named for Merrick County farmer Randy Thompson, who’s opposed to TransCanada’s Keystone XL project. Environmental groups have raised concerns that the pipeline could foul water supplies and increase pollution. The pipeline is designed to carry oil from Canada across Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
