One Arm Bandit performs at Buffalo Bill Rodeo

North Platte, Neb. – June, 2011 – A man with one arm might be limited in what he can do. But not for the One Arm Bandit, John Payne. John, Shidler, Okla., has taken a disadvantage and turned it into a good thing.

The 58 year old cowboy lost his right arm in an electrocution accident in 1973. After ranching for years and going broke twice (“the last time I went past being broke” he jokes), he become a pro rodeo entertainer.

He was at a rodeo with a stock contractor friend when he mouthed off that he could do better than the entertainer who was hired. The friend said, “we’ll let you be entertainer next year.” So Payne went to work.

By rodeo time next year, he had trained Corriente cattle to run on top of a trailer, with blackmouth cur dogs. It was a hit, and Payne’s act was born.

That was in 1987, and since then, he has trained mustangs, mules, longhorn-watusi steers, and bison to go up specially designed ramps on the tops of trailers and trucks.

His act has exceeded what mouthed off about thirty years ago. Since then, the One Arm Bandit has won the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Specialty Act of the Year eleven times, ranging from 1986 to 2010. He has worked such prestigious shows as the Calgary Stampede, RodeoHouston, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, and the National Finals Rodeo.

Now his children, Lynn and Amanda, criss-cross the country, each with their own rigs, entertaining at rodeos. In the summers, there are often three One Arm Bandit rigs traveling from coast to coast.

This isn’t the first time for the One Arm Bandit to perform in North Platte. He was at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo some years ago, and he is excited about returning. The colorful character says, “I’m looking forward to coming back. My show is a guarantee. If you come to the rodeo and watch the show and don’t think my show is worth the price of a ticket, and you can convince my mama, I’ll give you your money back.”

He and his wife Judy, who were married in 1975, enjoy their four grandkids.

The One Arm Bandit will be at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte June 15-18. He will entertain during each night of the rodeo. For more information on the rodeo, visit www.nebraskalanddays.com
