Flood levels lower than expected

NORTH PLATTE – River levels were forecasted to be at 8.1 feet by Sunday. Instead, the North Platte river in North Platte was measured at 7.69 feet Monday morning. The big question is why? Kevin Vicker discussed with Brian Hirsch of the National Weather Service.

The following information was updated after we spoke with Brian Hirsch.

National Guard to repair North Platte levee

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – The National Guard will soon begin to repair a levee east of North Platte. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says 14 Guard members will put sandbags on the levee with help from a helicopter. A second helicopter is expected to arrive Tuesday from Colorado.
A shelter has opened in North Platte to assist residents displaced by the swollen North Platte River.
Mindy Mangus with the American Red Cross told KNOP-TV that the
shelter opened Saturday at Adams Middle School. Sleeping areas have
been set up in the gym and food will be served in the cafeteria.
The North Platte River is swollen because of steady spring rain
and above-normal snowpack that have filled upstream reservoirs.

Mini Dike protects buildings, flood imminent

NORTH PLATTE – Operations are underway to protect buildings and property from impending flood waters scheduled to arrive this weekend.

At Scout’s Rest Ranch, the strategy is to surround buildings with a mini-dike of dirt, cover the dirt in plastic, and use sand bags to weigh down the plastic. This avoids the time it takes to fill sandbags and manually haul them around. The strategy is faster due to the help of bulldozers.

Boozin' it up in Nebraska Parks..

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The new-in-2011 Nebraska policy allowing alcohol in most state parks apparently passed its first holiday weekend test.     Nebraska Game and Parks administrator Roger Kuhn says his agency’s officers and other law enforcement agencies didn’t report anything out of the ordinary over the Memorial Day weekend.  The policy approved last year ended a 15-year ban on drinking alcohol in state parks. It went into effect Jan. 1, allowing alcohol consumption in all state parks, state historical parks andstate recreation areas, except at Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska and state wildlife management areas.  Alcohol consumption is barred in designated swimming areas, on roads, in parking lots and in certain other marked areas. Containers of alcohol larger than a gallon are not allowed.
