Children’s Hospital buys adjoining land in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Children’s Hospital & Medical Center has agreed to spend nearly $10 million on an adjoining parcel of land next to its facility in central Omaha.

Children’s plans to keep seven of the 12 acres it is buying. The remaining land just west of the hospital will be redeveloped for a mix of retail uses.

Children’s CEO Dr. Richard Azizkhan told the Omaha World-Herald that this deal will ensure the hospital remains in its current location for decades.

After this deal, Children’s will have roughly 22 acres at its main campus near 84th Street and West Dodge Road.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ rumbles to $121M box-office debut

NEW YORK (AP) — “Thor: Ragnarok” thundered to one of the year’s best box-office debuts, opening with an estimated $121 million in North American theaters.

The robust debut for the third “Thor” movie was a welcome shot in the arm for Hollywood and theater owners who have just suffered through a terrible October at the box office.

“Thor: Ragnarok” also bucked the trend of diminishing returns for sequels. The 2011 “Thor” debuted with $65.7 million; 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” opened with $85.7 million.

The big opening cements the unlikely breakthrough of New Zealand director Taika Waititi, who shepherded the $180 million production to Marvel’s best reviews since 2008’s “Iron Man.”

The weekend’s other new nationwide release was the holiday-themed comedy sequel “A Bad Mom’s Christmas.” It grossed $17 million over the weekend.

Average US gas price jumps 7 cents to $2.58 for regular

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of a gallon of regular-grade gasoline jumped 7 cents nationally over the past two weeks to $2.58.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the spike is a result of several factors, including higher oil prices.

The current price is 32 cents above where it was a year ago.

Gas in San Francisco was the highest in the contiguous United States at an average of $3.25 a gallon. The lowest was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at $2.14 a gallon.

The U.S. average diesel price is $2.82, up 6 cents from two weeks ago.

Nebraska inmate awaiting sentencing dies in hospice care

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 58-year-old state prisoner awaiting sentencing has died in hospice care following an undisclosed illness.

The Douglas County Department of Corrections says in a news release that Charles McNeal was pronounced dead Friday afternoon while under hospice care. The release says McNeal had been hospitalized since Sept. 22 and was recently transferred to hospice care.

Nebraska law requires an investigation whenever someone dies in custody. Douglas County officials say that investigation has already begun.

McNeal had been convicted in early September of three counts of sexual assault of a child younger than 12. Court records say the assaults on the child took place between August 2012 and the end of 2014.

McNeal had been scheduled to be sentenced for those convictions on Nov. 17.

Driver whose pickup fatally struck woman in Kearney gets jail time

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to probation and 60 days in jail for the death of a woman his pickup truck struck in a Kearney parking lot.

Court records say Tyler Olexo also was ordered at his sentencing hearing Thursday to pay a $500 fine, complete a driving course and write a letter of apology to the 88-year-old victim’s husband. The judge suspended half of the jail time. Olexo had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular homicide.

Prosecutors say Olexo, of Ravenna (ruh-VA’-nuh), struck Paula Newmyer and her shopping cart on March 30 as he was backing up in a Walmart parking lot. The Kearney resident’s head struck the pavement as she was knocked down. She died April 2.

Gator removals at Disney rise after toddler’s death

Lane Graves

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — State wildlife officials say the number of alligators removed from Walt Disney World property more than doubled in the six months after a Nebraska toddler was killed when a gator pulled him into the water.

The alligators were removed as part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife agency’s alligator nuisance program, which eliminated gators longer than 4-feet (1 meter).

An alligator grabbed 2-year-old Lane Graves of Omaha, Nebraska, as he played on a beach outside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort on June 14, 2016. Prior to his death that year, 24 alligators had been removed from Disney properties. The number more than doubled to 53 from the day of his death to the end of that year.

Disney said in a statement the company is working with wildlife officials.

Man accused of killing 6 ordered to remain in state care

Erwin Charles Simants

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ordered a man who authorities say killed six members of a Nebraska family more than 40 years ago to remain in state care.

Lincoln County District Judge Donald Rowlands ruled Wednesday that 72-year-old Erwin Charles Simants is still mentally ill, based upon a diagnosis by experts at the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln.

A report from experts at the Lincoln Regional Center says Simants hasn’t demonstrated “any agitation, anger, paranoia or delusional thinking and has been in remission for a long period of time.” He’s been diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Prosecutors say Simants shot and killed Henry and Audrey Kellie, their son David and three of their grandchildren in 1975 at the Kellies’ Sutherland home.

Plans underway to erect K-9 memorial in Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Organizers hope to build a memorial to law enforcement dogs and horses next to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial in Grand Island.

Organizers said at an announcement ceremony Wednesday at Grand Island’s Law Enforcement Center that work is expected to begin in 18 to 24 months. Jarret Daugherty is chairman of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial Committee, and he says the committee hopes to raise $25,000 to $30,000 for the project.

The addition would sit just northwest of the police memorial, which carries the names of 144 departed officers. A sidewalk would connect the two memorials.

The animal memorial would have a pillar on which images of a dog and horse would be etched. There also would be a concrete patio and two benches.
