Authorities ID victims of fatal northern Nebraska collision

VALENTINE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of two people killed and one person injured in a northern Nebraska collision.

Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott says Monday morning’s crash west of Valentine fatally injured 20-year-old Marcos Alvarado, of Alliance, and 64-year-old John Strinz, who lived in Eagen, Minnesota.

Scott says Alvarado was driving east on U.S. Highway 20 when his vehicle collided with a westbound vehicle driven by 63-year-old Kathryn Rice, who also lives in Minnesota.

Alvarado and Strinz were pronounced dead at the scene. Scott says Rice was taken Cherry County Hospital in Valentine.

Nebraska justice group handling prison crowding disbands

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Nebraska senators say now is not the time to disband a state committee that’s been working with a national state government group to handle prison crowding.

The committee of about 25 met for the last time on Tuesday, with its coordinator and the Council of State Governments concluding work within the next month.

Sens. Bob Krist of Omaha and Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln believe the group shouldn’t disband because of questionable progress made on crowding in county jails and a pending Nebraska ACLU lawsuit against the Department of Correctional Services.

Krist also says the group hasn’t addressed the impact of people with mental illnesses on the jails.

Gov. Pete Ricketts says work will continue with a permanent group of stakeholders in the state.

Lottery players will have a shot at a $700 million Powerball jackpot that ranks as the second largest in U.S. history.

Despite incredibly long odds, people throughout the country will hold their breath Wednesday night as five white balls and one red ball are drawn from drums.

The jackpot is second only to a $1.6 billion prize won in January 2016.

The $700 million prize reflects the annuity option, paid over 29 years. A winner who wants cash would receive $443.3 million, minus federal and state taxes that generally eat up more than 30 percent of winnings.

Odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Fire destroys greenhouses at North Platte nursery

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Fire has destroyed two greenhouses and heavily damaged another at a North Platte nursery.

Firefighters were called to Chasers Greenhouse and Nursery just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.

No one was injured in the fire.

North Platte Fire Department Lt. Jim Einspahr says the cause appears to have been electrical.

Einspahr says firefighters’ biggest challenge was extinguishing rolls of plastic used to cover the greenhouse frames, adding that the plastic helped the flames spread.

Owner Roxie Chase says she hopes to reopen the nursery by the end of the week.

Walmart dives into voice-activated shopping with Google

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is diving into voice-activated shopping. But unlike online leader Amazon, it’s not doing it alone.

The world’s largest retailer said Wednesday it’s working with Google to offer hundreds of thousands of items from laundry detergent to Legos for voice shopping through Google Assistant. The capability will be available in late September.

It’s Google’s biggest retail partnership as it tries to broaden the reach of its voice-powered assistant Home speaker, and it underscores Walmart’s drive to compete in an area dominated by Amazon’s Alexa-powered Echo device.

Walmart is working hard to close the gulf online between itself and Amazon. But it’s had to look beyond itself and form partnerships with other companies. Amazon generally has been building its network of services on its own, using its $99-a-year Prime membership to develop loyalty.

Inmate charged with murder in Nebraska prison uprising

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have charged a man with killing a fellow inmate during a prison uprising in southeast Nebraska.

The Nebraska attorney general’s office said Tuesday night in a news release that 26-year-old Eric Ramos is charged with first-degree murder and related crimes. Ramos is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

The attorney general’s office says Ramos killed 31-year-old Michael Galindo during the outbreak of violence March 2 at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. The bodies of Galindo and 39-year-old Damon Fitzgerald were found after authorities restored order. No one has been charged yet with killing Fitzgerald.

Authorities have said the uprising began because inmates were angry that prison staffers had confiscated 150 pounds (68 kilograms) of homemade alcohol from them.

NP police warn residents to look for counterfeit money

The following statement was issued by the North Platte Police Department:

The North Platte Police Dept. has received several reports of counterfeit bills being passed at area businesses.

There are two types of bills that we are seeing.  The first are known as “Chinese Training Money”.  These bills have red Chinese symbols printed on the front and back of them.  They do not have many of the security features such as color shifting ink, security strip and, watermarks.

The second type of bills are “Motion Picture Money” or “Prop Bills”.  These are used as props in movies by legitimate companies and have printed on them “For Motion Picture Use Only” in multiple areas.  The bills also lack the security features of real money.

Counterfeit pens should be effective on both types of bills and the best way to tell if they are fake is by just taking a brief amount of time to inspect and feel the bill.  They are real enough looking at a glance to be passed if the recipient isn’t paying attention.

While it is not illegal to merely possess the bills, it is a felony to intentionally attempt to pass them as real currency.

We ask that citizens and businesses be vigilant in watching for these types of bills and to call the police immediately if someone attempts to pass them as real currency.

2 accused of passing fake money at NP bank

Two people are in jail on felony charges after they allegedly attempted to pass a fake $100 bill.

On Monday, at around 12:24 p.m., a North Platte police officer responded to Nebrakaland National Bank, 1400 South Dewey, after an employee reported that someone had passed a counterfeit bill.

The officer made contact with the employee who advised that a car had come through the drive-thru with a female driver and male passenger.

The driver gave the teller the bill and requested change, according to Investigator John Deal.

Deal says the employee immediately noticed that the bill had “For Motion Picture Use Only” on the front of it.

The teller seized the bill and the vehicle left, but not before the teller was able to get the license plate.

A short time later, a citizen reported that the same vehicle was driving recklessly in the 1400 block of Burlington Avenue.

An officer was able to locate the vehicle parked in the area but didn’t observe it driving recklessly.

The vehicle was occupied by 19-year-old Baillie Simmerman and 20-year-old Anthony Fleecs, who Deal says fit the description of the couple that passed the fake bill at the bank.

Both were taken in for questioning where it was revealed that Fleecs had gotten the bill from a friend.  Deal says neither one would say who the friend was.

It was determined that there was probable cause to arrest both Simmerman and Fleecs for 1st-degree forgery, a felony.

The investigation is ongoing.
