Nebraska community adds campsites for eclipse viewers

Google Maps

RAVENNA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska community has developed 125 lakeside campsites for people journeying to see the total eclipse of the sun next month.

75 recreational vehicle sites and 50 for tent campers have been set up near Ravenna (ruh-VEH’-nuh). The city sits about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Kearney in central Nebraska, along the forecast path of the Aug. 21 total eclipse.

Officials say state campsites have been booked up, and other Nebraska accommodations along the path are hard to find.

The Ravenna Economic Development Corp. is advertising Eclipse Camping at Buffalo County Lake east of Ravenna. Each site must be reserved for all four days of the town’s eclipse celebration, Aug. 18-22. RV sites cost $300 for that span; tent sites are $100.

Kearney man gets 5 years in federal child porn case

A Health and Human Services Department spokeswoman has said Farrar was a security supervisor at the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kearney and that’d he worked for the department from June 1996 through September last year.

Kearney mom accused of child abuse gets year of probation

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 50-year-old Kearney woman accused of child abuse has been given a year of probation.

Online court records say Rebacca Hofaker-Zeller pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge. In addition to the probation, she also was sentenced last month to a day in jail already served.

A court document says a Buffalo County sheriff’s deputy arrested Hofaker-Zeller in December after day care workers discovered bruises and red marks on the face of one of her daughters. The girl and two sisters told social workers about being struck with an open hand and spanked with a belt.

Nebraska AG warns of Florida-based insurance scam

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska attorney general’s office is warning the public about a Florida-based company that officials say is running an insurance scam.

The attorney general’s office said in a news release Monday that it received notice this morning that scam artists are posing as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. Officials say the scam artists are using fake Google and Manta listings bearing Blue Cross’s logo and web address, along with bogus physical addresses in Omaha.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield investigators believe the scam is connected to a group called Simple Health out of Hollywood, Florida. They say the scam artists collect personal information and offer insurance plans well below market value. Customers have reported that the company charges their credit card monthly but never provides insurance cards.

Chadron resident wins buffalo chip throw at Nebraska event

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A Chadron man has won the men’s 18-and-older title at the World Championship Buffalo Chip Throw contest in Chadron.

23-year-old Dylan Brant tossed a piece of dried bison dung 110 feet, 1 inch to win Saturday during the 41st annual Fur Trade Days celebration. His victory returns to men’s title to Chadron, having been lost last year to Kingi Snelgar, of Oakland, New Zealand.

Brant’s toss fell far short of the individual competition record of 186-7 set by Gary Lackey of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, in 2000, and the 204 feet thrown by Kail Bowman in 1990 during a since-discontinued team event.

The women’s title this year was won by 29-year old Carmen Barth, of Lincoln. Her heave went 80 feet, 10 inches.

Ricketts names State Patrol superintendent search committee

Gov. Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts has named a four-member committee to help him select a new Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent.

The committee unveiled Friday is comprised of Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, who will serve as chairman; retired FBI executive Weysan Dun; former U.S. attorney Deb Gilg; and Hall County Public Defender Gerry Piccolo.

Committee members will seek and vet candidates to replace former Col. Brad Rice, who was fired last month in the midst of an internal review that found “inappropriate conduct” among the patrol’s senior staff. Six other employees were placed on paid administrative leave.

Officials have not disclosed everything from the ongoing review. It began after officers were accused of changing their story about a crash that killed a South Dakota driver during a high-speed chase.

Smoother rides ahead for highway cyclists in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials are working to redesign the state’s rumble strips to give highway cyclists a smoother and safer ride.

The new plan calls for regular breaks in rumble strips to help cyclists, and the design of rumble strips will be altered so they’re not the same as center line strips. The state also will add uniformity to where it puts rumble strips, giving cyclists more predictable shoulders.

State Sen. Robert Hilkemann of Omaha contacted the Department of Transportation about the issue after experiencing discomfort due to rumble strips on a biking trip in Wyoming.

The Nebraska Bicycling Alliance and Susan Larson Rodenburg, whose annual Tour de Nebraska takes hundreds of cyclists on five-day rides through the state, joined Hilkemann’s efforts to refurbish the roads.
