College Board to boost SAT security globally

testingPITTSBURGH (AP) — The firm that oversees registrations for the SAT college entrance exam is boosting security around the world following test-stealing and other cheating in recent years.

The College Board tells The Associated Press it’s reducing the number of international testing dates from six per year to four for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. It says the move will reduce opportunities for test content to be stolen.

In 2015, federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh charged 15 Chinese citizens in a conspiracy to have impostors take the SAT and other college entrance tests.

The New York-based college entrance exam provider also is taking steps to prevent past cheaters from retaking tests. It says it will alert law enforcement agencies about companies and people it suspects of illegally obtaining test content.

An announcement on its plans is scheduled for Wednesday.

Powerball jackpot tops $400 million for 1st time in months

powerballDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot has climbed above $400 million for the first time in nearly three months.

The top prize for Wednesday night’s drawing will be an estimated $403 million if paid over 29 years or $244 million in cash. Winners then would have to pay taxes on their winnings.

The game’s six numbers will be drawn at 10:59 p.m. eastern time. Five white balls are drawn from a drum with 69 balls and a red ball is drawn from a drum with 26 balls.

Powerball is played in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are incredibly small, at one in 292.2 million.

If there is no winner, the prize will increase before the next drawing Saturday night.

Push to reduce property taxes gains new support in Nebraska

taxesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A push to reduce property taxes in this year’s legislative session is gaining new support in Nebraska.

The coalition announced Tuesday includes 16 agricultural and school groups who will urge lawmakers to pass a package that includes “adequate and sustainable” funding for K-12 public schools while shifting the tax burden away from property owners.

Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says public schools have come to rely too heavily on property taxes to finance their operations. Roughly two-thirds of Nebraska’s public school districts don’t qualify for state equalization aid because their surrounding property values have risen too high, even though farm incomes have declined.

Group members say they’d support eliminating sales tax exemptions to offset property taxes, but they’re open to different ideas.

Court upholds dismissal of lawsuit in detention case

federal-court-of-appealsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit by a Papillion man who says he was unlawfully detained and wrongly treated as an illegal immigrant by Sarpy County officials.

A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday agreed with a lower federal court that Ramon Mendoza’s constitutional rights were not violated.

Mendoza sued the Sarpy County sheriff, jail staff and a federal immigration agent for being jailed in March 2010 after he was pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy for a traffic infraction.

Mendoza is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Mexico, but was held for days on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

Mining company’s lawsuit against Union Pacific moves forward

Union-PacificOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A federal judge has cleared the way for a lead and copper mining company’s lawsuit against Union Pacific over lead pollution to move forward.

This lawsuit related to contamination in Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Basin is one of several pending between Tucson, Arizona-based Asarco and Omaha, Nebraska-based Union Pacific.

A judge decided last week to reject Union Pacific’s motion for summary judgment in the case. Railroad officials didn’t immediately respond Monday to questions about the Idaho case.

Asarco says it filed the lawsuits to help ensure the $1.8 billion it paid for cleanups is effective.

Asarco lawyer Gregory Evans says the lead rocks Union Pacific used along its rail lines could threaten the cleanups.

Asarco, now owned by Grupo Mexico, ran lead smelters, metal refineries and numerous mines.
