Kansas woman’s effort to support Neb. flood victims goes viral

HAY, Kan. — When Fort Hays State University grad Addy Tritt decided to help Nebraska flood victims by buying out the remaining inventory of the Hays Payless store, she wasn’t thinking about the attention she would receive.

And no one could have expected just how much attention would be attracted to the Hays Post story.

Tritt has been in contact with news organizations ranging from Good Morning America to CBS News and the story has been republished in dozens of news outlets worldwide.

Just some of the national news organizations that published Tritt’s tale include Huff Post, CBS News, BBC News, the New York Post, the New York Daily News, Better Homes and Gardens, The Hill, the U.K. Daily Mail, USA Today, CNN, Fox News, Business Insider, Good Morning America and People. Dozens more local and regional news organizations also republished the story.

Tritt’s good-news article jumped the pond, as well, and was published in the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail.

The story has also been published in several languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Indonesian and Vietnamese, among others.

Nebraska looks to revise social studies standards

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Proposed academic standards for teaching social studies in Nebraska would require public school students to learn how to manage money and would encourage them to look at history from multiple perspectives.

The Nebraska Department of Education is seeking public input on the draft standards released Thursday. The standards detail what students in kindergarten through 12th grade will learn in history, economics, geography and civics.

Harris Payne is director of social studies for the Education Department. He says the draft builds on standards set in 2012 by adding clarity and direction for teachers.

The standards also address how to teach about topics such as marginalized groups, climate change and civic engagement.

The State Board of Education is expected to vote on the revised standards in the fall.

Eagle acquires Salina-based video production company

$25M in federal emergency funds released for Nebraska roads

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Transportation Department has approved $25 million in emergency relief funds from the Federal Highway Administration to quickly repair Nebraska roads damaged by devastating floods last month.

The federal department describes the money as “quick release” funding to be used to restore essential traffic and prevent additional damage at locations affected by severe flooding. It will also support efforts to restore traffic and open routes for medical and food supplies for people and livestock. The department says an initial estimate of damage tops $160 million — more than half the state’s annual apportionment of federal-aid funds. That number is expected to climb as additional damage assessment information is received.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said in a news release Thursday that initial inspections have identified over 300 road sites that need repairs and are eligible for emergency relief funds.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation estimates nearly 190 highway miles and 27 state bridges have sustained flood-related damages.

Nebraska’s new tourism motto could appear on shirts, mugs

(AP) — Nebraska’s new tourism motto could soon be spreading to T-shirts and coffee mugs.Lawmakers gave first-round approval Thursday to a bill that would allow the Nebraska Tourism Commission to sell promotional items with its attention-grabbing catchphrase: “Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”State tourism officials say they’ve received many requests for merchandise with the motto after it spread on national media. It’s part of a broader publicity effort to attract visitors and fight national perceptions of Nebraska as a flat, boring, flyover state.Senators advanced the bill, 40-0, through the first of three required votes before it goes to the governor.

Flood forces 2 Nebraska Passport stops out of 2019 program

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Nebraska Passport stops affected by widespread flooding have withdrawn from this year’s program.

The Nebraska Tourism Commission said Thursday that Niobrara State Park in Niobrara and The Tow Line, a bar and grill at the Fremont State Recreation Area, will no longer participate.

Both stops will be featured on the 2020 Nebraska Passport. They’ll still be open this summer, but the temporary closure of Highway 12 has made access to Niobrara State Park more difficult than normal. Portions of Fremont State Recreation Area may be closed while repairs are made.

The stops have been replaced with Fia + Belle, a Fremont antique and clothing shop, and Ponca State Park in Ponca.

The Nebraska Passport program encourages residents and visitors to collect stamps at tourist spots throughout the state.

Game and Parks seeks input on Lake McConaughy boat ramp improvements

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is soliciting public input for motorized boat ramp improvements at Lake McConaughy’s Martin Bay and Cedar View.

Department warns of potential scam on DNA cheek swabs

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska authorities are warning people about a possible scam involving DNA cheek swabs for cancer checks.

The Nebraska Insurance Department says it’s gotten several reports about groups going to senior centers and assisted-living facilities and offering to swab the inside of face cheeks to obtain DNA samples. The department says Medicare does not cover genetic testing for noncancer patients and that people should avoid such services because they likely are scams.

Insurance Department Director Bruce Ramge says the department concerns are that Medicare dollars may have been spent fraudulently on noncovered services and that people who were swabbed may be billed for services that Medicare won’t cover.

People who think they might have encountered the swab groups are encouraged to call the department’s Consumer Affairs Division at 402-471-0888.

Nebraska bill to require child hearing aid coverage advances

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A bill that would require most health insurance plans to cover hearing aids for children and teenagers has won first-round approval from Nebraska lawmakers.

Senators advanced the measure Wednesday through the first of three votes.

The proposal by Sen. Carol Blood, of Bellevue, would require plans to cover expenses associated with hearing aids for Nebraska residents younger than 19.

Blood says the $1,500 to $3,000 cost of hearing aids is unaffordable for many families. Blood was deaf as a child and says hearing aids are a lifeline even though many insurance companies consider the insertion of hearing aids an elective procedure.

The bill includes some exemptions for small businesses and companies that can show the expense is greater than one percent of their annual premium dollars.

The vote was 39-0.
