Nebraska senator moonlights as driver for ride-sharing Uber

Sen. Ben Sasse

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican senator helped his constituents get around this weekend by moonlighting as a driver for the ride-sharing service Uber.

In a series of tweets, Ben Sasse of Nebraska explained his decision to get behind the wheel by saying he works “alongside and for” the people of the Cornhusker state.

Sasse says the money he earned is going to charity. As a senator, he’s not allowed to make any money outside his congressional service.

Sasse worked late Saturday night and found that at least a few of his fares had been partying a little too much.

He quipped, “if you throw up in an Uber, the surcharge can be substantial.” But the risk has rewards. He says it’s a “market incentive to get drivers to agree to” Saturday night shifts.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A trade delegation led by Gov. Pete Ricketts is looking for ways to place more Nebraska beef and pork in Asia.

The delegation on Monday visited a food service training institute in Macau. The governor’s office says the group is working on a potential agreement in which cooking classes would use Nebraska meat products.

Later in the day, Ricketts and the trade delegation hosted an annual Nebraska barbecue event in Macau. More than 300 Macau food industry representatives attended the event to learn about the benefits of Nebraska pork and beef. The governor’s office says Ricketts signed several letters of intent with Macau-based restaurants to purchase Nebraska beef.

Ricketts also visited Tongji University in Shanghai, China, to discuss a partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Billionaire Warren Buffett was disappointed when Democrat Hillary Clinton lost the election last week, but he will support Republican Donald Trump as president.

Buffett talked about the election results and his optimistic outlook for the country with CNN.

Buffett says he supports every president, and he hopes the country will coalesce behind Trump even if not everyone agrees with his policies.

Buffett told CNN that he remains confident that America will be more prosperous in the future and will continue to grow.

The investor who leads Berkshire Hathaway says the country’s market system will continue to work regardless of who is president.

Nebraska power utility leaders discuss industry changes

powerlinesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The heads of Nebraska’s three largest electric utilities say changes are coming to the state’s public power industry as solar and wind-generated energy becomes more prevalent.

The leaders of Nebraska Public Power District, Omaha Public Power District and the Lincoln Electric System discussed the changes at a conference earlier this week highlighting efforts to harvest sun and wind resources.

Among the factors leading utilities to make changes, the leaders said, are cheap natural gas, more efficient homes, electricity surpluses, stagnant demand and changing government regulations.

OPPD has already seen quite a bit of change this year, with the shuttering of its nuclear power plant in Fort Calhoun last month.

ALLIANCE, Neb. (AP) — The former Nebraska Boys Ranch won’t be reopening to help troubled boys.

Adult & Teen Challenge of the Midlands acquired the site southeast of Alliance in 2012 after Boys Ranch suspended services its services in March 2010. The organization wanted to place up to 16 boys there for treatment of substance abuse through a Christian-centered program.

The organization’s Bob Larson says in a news release that licensing complexities and expected operating costs have since forced his organization to focus its efforts on existing adult ministries.

Larson says his organization will be talking to other nonprofit, youth and Christian organizations about the future of the Panhandle property.

Nebraska’s net tax receipts meet projections in October

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska collected $233 million in net tax revenue in October, right on par with projections.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue released its latest tax receipt numbers on Thursday. Net sales-and-use taxes, individual income taxes, corporate income taxes and miscellaneous taxes all matched the forecast.

The numbers matched because the forecast was updated on Oct. 28. The Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board revised its forecast for the current fiscal year downward by $172 million, projecting that the state would collect roughly $4.4 billion.

Nebraska lawmakers and Gov. Pete Ricketts will face a projected budget shortfall of more than $900 million when they convene in January to craft a new two-year state budget.

2-vehicle accident sends 3 to hospital in NP

NP Police and Fire personnel responded to a two-vehicle injury accident at the intersection of 8th and Oak Streets on Thursday afternoon. Two adults and a child were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

A Thursday afternoon accident sent three people to the hospital in North Platte.

Just before 5:00 p.m., North Platte police and fire personnel responded to the report of an injury rollover accident at the intersection of 8th and Oak Streets.

According to Sergeant Gary Hovey, a minivan was southbound 0n Oak Street when, at the same time, a sedan was eastbound on 8th Street.  Hovey says the vehicles entered the intersection, which is unmarked, and collided.

The minivan rolled onto its top and came to rest south of the intersection on Oak Street, while the sedan remained in the intersection.

Police say two adults and a child from the minivan were transported to Great Plains Health with minor injuries.

Because the accident occurred at an unmarked intersection, Hovey said the vehicle on the right, the sedan, would have had the right-of-way. However, the crash remains under investigation.

“This time of year when the sun can block your view, these unmarked intersections are dangerous and people need to use caution,” Hovey said.

It is believed that both vehicles will be a total loss.
