A 66-year-old North Platte man is facing child porn charges after technicians at a local computer shop discovered possible images of child porn on his computer.

According to Investigator John Deal, on August 26, at around 3:07 p.m., an officer responded to Computer Troubleshooters, 1320 South Cottonwood, on a child pornography complaint.

Employees of the business were interviewed, and it was reported that a Gale Gibbs dropped off a laptop computer to be serviced.

As employees were working on the computer, they discovered images that appeared to be child pornography.

On August 31, Deal says a search warrant was secured for Gibbs’ residence in the 700 block of East Philip Avenue.  During a preliminary search of a computer at the home, officers discovered a video that met the statutory requirements of child pornography.

As a result, Gibbs was charged with felony possession of child pornography and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

According to jail records, Gibbs is being held without bond.

Survey: More US adults use marijuana, don’t think it’s risky

marijuana-budNEW YORK (AP) — New research shows more U.S. adults are using marijuana, using it more often and far fewer think it’s risky.

That’s understandable, experts say, as dozens of states now allow medical marijuana and four states have recently legalized pot for recreational use.

More than a half million U.S. adults participated in the survey over a dozen years, and the responses show a shift in attitude. Only a third of adults in 2014 said they thought weekly marijuana use was dangerous, down from half of adults in 2002.

The study was published online Wednesday by the journal Lancet Psychiatry.

Facebook changes to Trending Topics questioned after blunder

facebook-logoMENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — Facebook’s changes to its “Trending Topics” section are being questioned after it featured a false report about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.

The story posted Saturday falsely claimed Kelly had been fired by Fox because she secretly supported Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Another topic trending was #McChicken, which took users to stories about a video of a man using the McDonald’s sandwich in a sex act.

Facebook announced Friday that an algorithm would select trending topics in place of humans but human editors would still screen them.

Menlo Park, California-based Facebook has apologized for the Kelly story, telling CBS News its editors mistakenly thought it was legitimate before realizing the error. Facebook says that the McChicken topic doesn’t violate its content policy and that any trending topic that reflects a real-world event may be featured.

BROKEN BOW, Neb. (AP) — A Broken Bow woman has been convicted in the 2013 death of a toddler in the western Nebraska town.

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office says a Custer County jury found 26-year-old Brittney Pryce guilty Wednesday of child abuse resulting in death. Pryce faces 20 years to life in prison when she’s sentenced on Nov. 10.

Authorities say 20-month-old Noah Pryce suffered a suspicious head injury in November 2013 while in a car with Pryce and Pryce’s mother, Diane Hill.

Both women were initially charged with second-degree murder. The case against Hill was dismissed in July 2014. A murder charge against Pryce also was dropped.

Authorities say Pryce and her husband, Richard Pryce, were Noah’s guardians.

Oversight panel questions Nebraska corrections leader

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s top corrections official is facing questions from a legislative oversight committee about staffing vacancies in his department, a major problem that has contributed to high levels of employee turnover.

Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes acknowledged Wednesday that the number of positions requested in a staffing report was less than what his staff originally recommended.

A draft report by the department initially called for 254 additional positions, at a cost of nearly $12 million a year. That number was lowered in the final report to 138 positions, at a cost of roughly $653,000.

Prison officials note that they’re already taking steps to address staffing problems. Administrators announced plans Wednesday to award a one-time $500 retention bonus for 1,000 employees in jobs with high turnover and vacancy rates.

Crash investigators suspect excessive speed and Garner’s consumption of alcohol were factors in the crash.

Some Nebraska prison staffers to get $500 retention bonus

ne-department-of-correctionsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska corrections officials are awarding $500 retention bonuses to prison employees who work in jobs with high turnover and vacancy rates.

The Department of Correctional Services announced the bonuses Tuesday as part of its efforts to recruit and retain workers.

Department spokeswoman Dawn-Renee Smith says the bonuses will go to roughly 1,000 of the department’s 2,300 employees, including officers, caseworkers, nurses, mental health practitioners and chemical dependency counselors. Employees will receive the bonuses on Sept. 14.

Prison officials have been trying to improve working conditions in the department amid complaints about staffing shortages and inmate assaults.

A legislative committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss staffing issues in the prisons. The union representing prison employees is set to begin negotiations for a new contract later this year.

Kearney youth center worker accused of sex assault

yrtcKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A mental health practitioner at the state youth treatment center in Kearney has been arrested.

Online jail records say she remained in Buffalo County custody Tuesday. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for her.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says Halstead quit before her arrest.
