Nebraska band goes hi-tech for high-stepping halftime shows

huskers logoLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Cornhusker Marching Band has new instruments to play as they prepare for and perform during this fall’s football season.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln group has leased 320 iPad Mini 4’s for three years.

Music, drills, formations and movements will be available at the touch of their screens.

The software puts sheet music in a format that allows scrolling and playing at the same time, allowing members to mark sections along the way. A metronome and tuner are built-in. The drill software helps improve the musicians’ synchronization by providing individual coordinates for each member.

The Cornhusker band is now in step with Ohio State University, which adopted the iPads in 2014. The University of Oklahoma also uses the technology.

GM recalling about 368,000 vehicles to fix windshield wipers

general-motorsGeneral Motors is recalling nearly 368,000 vehicles to fix a defective part that could prevent the windshield wipers from working.

The problem affects the 2013 models of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. GM says those vehicles were built with ball joints that could corrode and wear out to render the windshield wipers inoperable.

A report filed with government regulators says a GM manager in Canada spotted the potential safety hazard last December. The auto manufacturer opened an investigation in March and decided to issue a recall earlier this month.

GM says it will cover the repair costs once it determines when it will be able to fix the problem.

Chevrolet Equinox owners can call 1-800-222-1020 and GMC Terrain can call 1-800-462-8782 for further information.

Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado reach Republican River agreement

Republican-RiverLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska have reached a new agreement in their longstanding conflict over water in the Republican River basin.

The three states announced Friday that they have signed resolutions following monthly negotiations that stretched over two years.

The two resolutions are intended to provide greater flexibility and certainty for all water users in the region. The states have been locked in legal battles over the water for the last 15 years.

The 1943 compact entitles Nebraska to 49 percent of the river’s water, while Kansas receives 40 percent and Colorado gets 11 percent. The Republican River originates in Colorado, crosses the northwestern tip of Kansas into Nebraska, then runs through Nebraska before re-entering Kansas in its northeastern corner.

The colonel’s secret recipe revealed? Not so fast, says KFC

KFC - logoNEW YORK (AP) — Has Col. Sanders’ nephew inadvertently revealed to the world the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices behind KFC’s fried chicken empire?

The company says the recipe published in the Chicago Tribune is not authentic. But that hasn’t stopped rampant online speculation that one of the most legendary and closely guarded secrets in the history of fast food has been exposed.

KFC — which is a subsidiary of Yum Brands Inc. — calls its recipe “one of the biggest trade secrets in the world.”

The Louisville, Kentucky-based company says that the original recipe from 1940 handwritten by Sanders is locked up in a digital safe that’s encased in two feet of concrete and monitored 24 hours a day by a video and motion detection surveillance system.

Organizers are putting the pieces in place to celebrate the 30th year of “Going Bananas For Jesus XIX.”  The bi-annual event will take place in North Platte, Neb., March 17 – 19, 2017.  Catholic youth, in grades 6 – 12, will be invited to a three-day event that includes lots of fun and a focus on faith.

Co-Mama Banana, Brenda Conell, says Jesse Manibusan and ValLimar Jensen will headline the weekend.  “Both Jesse and Val are Catholics and musicians with the ability to connect to every age with messages of faith,” say Conell.  “We are so fortunate to have such high-caliber presenters in North Platte, as they both travel the world speaking to thousands and thousands of people.”

Conell says organizers are using wristbands and social media to spread the word about Going Bananas For Jesus.  “Our goal is to make sure everyone knows about our event, so they can save the date and plan to attend,” says Conell.  People can find Going Bananas For Jesus on facebook, twitter, and the Grand Island Diocese web page.

“We are also distributing the wristbands, posters, and early marketing materials to every parish,” says Cathy Hiatt, also a Co-Mama Banana.  “We want people to look at the wristbands say a prayer for the youth in our diocese,” says Hiatt.

The Going Bananas for Jesus XIX North Platte team is looking for a fun and energetic group of young adults to help lead the retreat weekend, too. The “Banana Bunch” will be divided into three teams responsible for acting, singing, and entertaining their peers throughout the weekend. “We hope to build our Bunch with youth from across the Grand Island Diocese through an application and audition process. We are auditioning for singers, actors, and/or hosts,” says Morgan Harms, “it’s similar to the animator application process used for the National Catholic Youth Conference.”

Applications are available by emailing gbfjnorthplatte@gmail.com.  The deadline is September 30th.

Anyone who would like more information can email the organizers, or simply like the Facebook page as all registration information will be posted there.

Omaha bank to pay $35M for unfair, deceptive practices

first-national-bankOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — First National Bank of Omaha will pay more than $35 million in reimbursements and civil fines after federal regulators concluded that some of the bank’s practices deceptively or unfairly enrolled and charged customers for products they didn’t get.

The bank hasn’t sold any of the products in regulators’ sights since 2012, and two of them had been sold to customers since 1997.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the bank’s main regulator, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, ordered the bank to reimburse about 257,000 customers for a total of nearly $27.8 million. The bank must also pay $7.5 million in civil fines.

The protection bureau enforcement action found the bank obscured its sales pitch, deceived consumers into making a purchase and made it hard for customers to cancel such services.

fatal-crashGIBBON, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of three people involved in a fatal Interstate 80 crash in south-central Nebraska.

The driver was hospitalized in Kearney. The patrol says she’s a 17-year-old girl from Lansing, Michigan.

Attack ramps up pressure to raise Nebraska prison staffing

ne-state-penLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An attack that sent nine Nebraska prison employees to the hospital is ramping up pressure on state officials to increase staffing levels at their facilities.

The assaults prompted several state lawmakers to call for more manpower in the prisons. A Department of Correctional Services staffing analysis released Thursday says the agency needs to fill an additional 138 positions. The greatest need is at the Lincoln Correctional Center, which needs 44 additional positions.

Gov. Pete Ricketts on Thursday called for the state’s public employee union to negotiate immediately on a special prison employee contract.

Mike Marvin, executive director of the Nebraska Association of Public Employees, says the union cannot legally negotiate for prison employees alone. The negotiations must also include protective service staffers in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Adam Marshall, Associate Broker and lead auctioneer for Lashley Land and Recreational Brokers has won two prestigious Auctioneer Championships

In May, Adam won the 2016 Auctioneer Championship Contest held at the annual convention of the Nebraska Auctioneer Association. That competition featured 20 contestants from Nebraska, Colorado, and Texas. The contest was judged by nationally known, world championship winning judges.

Adam went on to compete at the Iowa State Fair on August 16th , placing first again as Grand Champion of the Iowa Auctioneer Association’s Bid Calling Championship, beating out 20 contestants from multiple states. Again, the judges were nationally and internationally known and respected auctioneers.

The format for both contests is a live auction consisting of a preliminary round with the top ten contestants advancing to the final round. Each contestant introduces themselves, describes their items, and auctions them to the audience. The auctioneer is judged on their auction chant, which includes voice control, speed, clarity, rhythm, as well as appearance and body language.

Both contests feature a cash prize and either a trophy or a belt buckle, along with automatic entry for the International Championship to be held in July 2017 in Columbus Ohio.

In addition to his role as the lead auctioneer/associate broker for Lashley Land and Recreational Brokers, Inc. of North Platte, Adam owns Adam Marshall Auctioneers, conducting farm equipment and land auctions across Nebraska. Adam also works as a Relationship Manager at Heartland Bank in Riverdale. Adam is also active in his community by volunteering his services at local fundraisers such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, University of Nebraska at Kearney athletic fundraisers and various Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever events.
