New Girls Scout cookie revealed

smores-cookieAugust 10 is National S’mores Day, and the perfect time to announce that the Girl Scouts have added a new variety to their cookie line-up: Girl Scout S’moresTM.

When you think of S’mores, you think of Girl Scouts. As far back as the early 1920s, the tradition of making and enjoying S’mores has been a staple of their outdoor experiences. Many a marshmallow has been slow- roasted and smooshed onto a bar of chocolate between two graham crackers around a Girl Scout campfire.
The new, S’mores-inspired Girl Scout Cookie is a clever take on the time-honored campfire treat. It is one more delicious way for consumers to support Girl Scouts in their community and the positive impact girls are making with their cookie proceeds.

Girl Scout S’moresTM will be available in Nebraska when girls begin their Girl Scout Cookie Program sales on Friday, February 3, 2017.

Girl Scouts also reminds girls, parents, volunteers and community leaders that it is time to join and have S’more fun than ever imagined.

NP woman reports being stabbed during altercation

north_platte_patchNorth Platte police are investigating after a woman reported being stabbed during an altercation on Wednesday afternoon.

At around 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2600 block of West 19th Street.

Officers made contact with an adult female who said she had been stabbed, however, police say they are unable to verify that at this time.  Investigator John Deal said she was transported to Great Plains Health with minor injuries, but did not elaborate on exactly how she was injured.

Deal said officers are currently interviewing several subjects, including the victim, who were present when the altercation occurred.

At this time, investigators say it is too early in the investigation to say whether any criminal charges will be filed.  Deal said there is no threat to the public, and police believe that all individuals involved have been contacted by law enforcement.

More information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.  The names of those involved have not been released.  No arrests have been reported.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will get to sell more than $405 million worth of corn, soybeans, wheat and other commodities to Taiwanese businesses under an agreement set to be signed next week.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Wednesday that the state’s agriculture director will travel to Taiwan to finalize the deal with letters of intent. Ricketts says Taiwan is an important trading partner, and the agreement will benefit Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers.

Department of Agriculture Director Greg Ibach says Nebraska has signed similar deals in the past, but the newest one includes the purchase of beef and pork products.

Nebraska exports about $7.2 billion in agricultural products annually. Taiwan is the United States’ 9th largest trading partner.

Ricketts: Embattled Nebraska senator no longer effective

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts says a Nebraska senator who had cybersex on a state computer can no longer effectively advocate for his constituents.

Ricketts on Wednesday renewed his call for state Sen. Bill Kintner to resign from office. Kintner, of Papillion, was fined $1,000 last week and publicly admitted that he had cybersex with a woman he met online. Kintner contacted authorities after the woman tried to extort money.

Ricketts has previously said Kintner should resign if the allegations against him were true. After Kintner acknowledged his actions on Friday, Ricketts says he met with him a second time and again asked him to step down. Ricketts says Kintner listened but was noncommittal.

Senators are now considering options such as impeaching Kintner or expelling him from the Legislature.

Inmate injured 3 staffers at penitentiary, officials say

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State officials say an inmate has injured three staffers at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says the inmate began punching a guard around 2 p.m. Tuesday and then struck two other staff members who went to the guard’s aid. The department says the guard was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and says the two other staffers sought outside medical treatment.

The department says the facility’s medium/maximum-security housing units soon were locked down, restricting movement for about half the prison population.

The department says it will investigate the incident and forward results to the Lancaster County attorney for a decision on any prosecution. The names of those involved haven’t been released.

Activists: Enforce law in Whiteclay or close beer stores

whiteclay-neLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Advocates who want to end beer sales in Whiteclay are calling on state officials to enforce liquor laws in the Nebraska town or revoke the licenses of its four beer stores.

The group said in a statement Tuesday that Nebraska needs to provide adequate law enforcement if the stores are allowed to remain open.

The stores sold the equivalent of 3.5 million beer cans last year despite having a dozen residents. It’s located on the border of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned but alcohol-related problems run rampant.

A task force formed at Gov. Pete Ricketts’ urging has suggested possible solutions, including more law enforcement.

Whiteclay activist John Maisch, who produced a documentary about the town, says closing the stores is the cheapest option for taxpayers.

45-year-old Brian Redinger pleaded not guilty Tuesday making terroristic threats, strangulation, third-degree domestic assault and first-degree criminal attempt at assault.

Sheriff’s investigators say that on April 10, Redinger attacked his wife, hitting her head on a car dashboard and later driving at her before she escaped to safety at a Hall County truck stop.

He resigned his position as superintendent of Shelton Public Schools some weeks after his arrest.

OSHA investigating worker’s fall in Nebraska Panhandle

OSHASCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Federal safety officials have begun investigating a worker’s fall at a construction site in Scottsbluff.

The fall occurred at a Western Sugar Cooperative facility. Initial reports are that the worker fell through a floor opening on the second floor and was hospitalized.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the worker is an employee of DSI Mechanical. DSI is part of Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Design Solutions & Integration.

DSI attorney Aaron Dean says DSI is investigating Wednesday’s accident and looks forward to cooperating with OSHA. He also says DSI employees have all completed 10-hour OSHA construction safety courses that include fall protection.

Dean says he can’t release the worker’s name but says he’s recovering at a Scottsbluff medical facility.
