Nebraska’s jobless rate unchanged at 3 percent

workforceLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska’s unemployment rate remained 3 percent in June, the same rate it’s been since June last year.

The Nebraska Labor Department said in the report issued Friday that the preliminary June rate remained well below the preliminary national unemployment rate of 4.9 percent in June — two-tenths of a point above the revised May rate of 4.7 percent.

The U.S. Labor Department says only South Dakota’s preliminary rate of 2.7 percent and New Hampshire’s 2.8 percent were lower in June than Nebraska’s 3 percent.

Nebraska Supreme Court upholds man’s murder conviction

Angelo Bol

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the first-degree murder conviction of a Grand Island man who fatally shot a co-worker outside a south-central Nebraska meatpacking plant.

Angelo Bol was sentenced in July to life in prison for the Dec. 15, 2014, killing of 34-year-old Karel Perez-Almaguer in the parking lot of Gibbon Packing in Gibbon. Prosecutors say Bol had been fired that day over a fight a day earlier involving Perez-Almaguer.

In his appeal, Bol argued that the trial court should not have accepted his no-contest plea and that he should have been appointed an interpreter because he had trouble understanding English.

On Friday, the state’s high court rejected that argument, saying Bol could comprehend the trial proceedings and communicate in English.

GM recalls about 290K cars; air bags may not work in crash

general-motorsDETROIT (AP) — General Motors is recalling nearly 290,000 older Chevrolet Impala sedans in the U.S. because the air bags might not inflate in a crash.

The recall covers Impalas from the 2009 and 2010 model years that were made before Feb. 10, 2010.

GM says in government documents that the front passenger seat frame can rub against the wiring for a passenger detection sensor. Damaged wiring could cut power to the sensor and knock out the air bags.

Air bag warning lights will illuminate if the wires are chafed. But some gauges may not work.

Dealers will add anti-abrasion tape to fix the problem. There’s no schedule yet for when repairs will be made.

Cherry County panel rejects wind farm permit request

windmillVALENTINE, Neb. (AP) — The Cherry County Planning Commission has recommended against approving a permit for a proposed wind farm.

The commission voted against a plan by Bluestem Sandhills LLC to erect 30 windmills over several thousand acres. The commission adjourned early Wednesday morning after several people spoke for or against the project. So many people showed up for the commission meeting at the courthouse that it was moved to Valentine High School.

Critics of the plan cited fears about the environment. A company representative didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.

Human case of West Nile virus found in Scotts Bluff County

mosquitoSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus this year in western Nebraska’s Scotts Bluff County.

The case was reported earlier this month.

Experts say most people who are infected have no symptoms or experience only mild, flu-like symptoms. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 or have weakened immune systems.

The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquitoes, which acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Nebraska reported 68 human cases of West Nile virus and two deaths last year. In 2014, eight deaths were blamed on West Nile virus.

City use permit issue for mosque headed to Lexington council

city-of-lexingtonLEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) — The Lexington City Council is expected to consider a use permit for a mosque that’s been operating downtown without the permit.

City and mosque officials have been negotiating since the city sued the Islamic Center of Dawson County, saying a certificate of occupancy hadn’t been obtained and a conditional use permit was required before the former laundromat can be used for religious purposes.

The city Planning Commission has approved the use permit and forwarded the issue to the council for its consideration Tuesday.

The City Council originally voted Dec. 22 to deny the permit, citing concerns about parking and what was best for development and redevelopment of downtown.
