RED WILLOW, Neb. (AP) — The Mid-Plains Center for Enterprise is holding free youth all-terrain vehicle training in McCook.
The training will be at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
There will be two sessions — one from 9 a.m. to noon and another from 1-4 p.m. Classes will be divided by age group.
The curriculum, developed by Central States Safety Driver Training, will consist of a combination of safety instruction and guided, hands-on ATV operation. Participants will practice turns, stops and terrain navigation.
ATVs in different sizes will be used during the trainings. Parents must stay for classes attended by children younger than 10.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled that tanning salons cannot claim more than $1.7 million in tax refunds despite arguments that they shouldn’t have been subject to the tax.
The court said Friday that the salons don’t have legal standing to claim the refunds because the tax was paid by their customers.
Seven salons sought refunds in 2013 after a Nebraska attorney general’s opinion suggested that they were not subject to state admissions taxes. The Nebraska Department of Revenue has since stopped collecting that tax from tanning salons.
The court also rejected arguments that the salons should be given legal standing so they can allow the customers to seek refunds directly from them.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and the state’s leading agricultural groups are touting the benefits of a major trade deal proposed between the United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations.
The coalition released an analysis on Thursday showing that the Trans-Pacific Partnership would increase Nebraska’s total cash receipts by more than $378 million annually from the sale of agricultural products.
The analysis says Cuming, Custer, Platte, Dawson and Lincoln counties would see the biggest economic benefits, but every county would see gains.
The Nebraska Farm Bureau, Nebraska Cattlemen, Nebraska Pork Producers Association, Nebraska Corn Born and the Nebraska Soybean Association are all calling on Congress to ratify the agreement.
Ricketts says lowering tariffs through the agreement would help Nebraska expand its trade relationship with Japan, one of the state’s biggest partners.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who spent 20 years on Nebraska’s death row for killing two women has died in prison.
A corrections spokesman says 60-year-old Randolph Reeves died at the Nebraska State Penitentiary just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Spokesman Andrew Nystrom says Reeves is believed to have died of natural causes.
Reeves was sentenced to death in 1981 for the murders of 30-year-old Janet Mesner and 28-year-old Victoria Lamm in Lincoln the previous year.
He came within 40 hours of being executed in 1999 before the state Supreme Court withdrew his death warrant to hear a last-minute appeal. Reeves was resentenced to life in prison without parole in 2001 after justices ruled that three-judge panels must be unanimous when imposing a death sentence.
GERING, Neb. (AP) — A man accused of stealing a front end loader to clear snow from private parking lots in Scottsbluff has made a plea deal with prosecutors.
The agreement signed Wednesday by 45-year-old Jody Jackson said he would plead to a felony count of criminal mischief. Prosecutors agreed to drop theft and related charges in return. The agreement says prosecutors will recommend three years of probation but also says the district court judge isn’t bound by the recommendation.
Prosecutors say Jackson is a former BNSF employee who took the loader from the Scottsbluff depot on Dec. 15. He told authorities he just wanted to do some good for the community. Police say there was damage to one of the lots and say damage to the loader was noted after Jackson returned it.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Advocates are hosting a conference on fetal alcohol syndrome in Whiteclay, a tiny Nebraska village known for selling large quantities of beer near a South Dakota Indian reservation that bans alcohol.
The conference on Thursday and Friday is part of a broader effort to address alcoholism on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Speakers include experts on fetal alcohol syndrome, sexual and domestic violence and a teacher who has worked on the reservation. Native American Activist Frank LaMere of South Sioux City is also scheduled to speak, as is Whiteclay documentary filmmaker and former Oklahoma assistant attorney general John Maisch.
Whiteclay’s four beer stores sold the equivalent of 3.5 million cans of beer last year in a town with about a dozen full-time residents.
DETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling about a half-million Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide because the driver’s air bag may not inflate in a crash.
The recall covers Wranglers from the 2007 through 2010 model years, including 392,000 in the U.S.
Another 7,400 2011-2016 Wranglers in the U.S. with right-hand-drive also are affected.
The company says excessive exposure to dust and dirt from off-road driving can cause electrical problems in the steering column air bag wiring. If that happens, a warning lamp will come on and owners should contact their dealer.
Fiat Chrysler says it’s not aware of any related injuries. The problem was discovered by a company investigation.
Dealers will install a new steering wheel back cover and steering column shroud. The company says it will notify customers when parts are available.

A North Platte woman is facing a felony assault and child abuse charge after she allegedly assaulted her husband.
According to Investigator John Deal, officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of North Pacific Street at around 11:46 a.m., on May 17 .
Officers met with 31-year-old Heather Granados, her 27-year-old husband, and several independent witnesses.
Officers learned that Granados and her husband were allegedly not getting along, and Granados took their two children outside of an apartment where they were staying.
According to Deal, the husband believed that Granados was under the influence drugs, and went outside to retrieve the children.
As the man approached Granados, she allegedly began swinging at him, then grabbed a box cutter that was in his pocket and cut him on the arm with it, all while she was holding a one of the children.
Police say the victim had a cut that corroborated his story, and a box cutter was located near Granados. They say she fought and resisted officers as they attempted to detain her.
In the end, Granados was placed under arrest and charged with felony 2nd-degree domestic assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, felony child abuse, and resisting arrest.
Granados was taken to Great Plains Health for medical clearance before being jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
The children, who were uninjured, were placed in temporary state custody.
