The temblor could be felt as far away as Grand Island.

Survey Gives Continuing Signs of Midwest Economic Doldrums

economyOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Figures have dropped for a fifth straight month in a survey of supply managers in nine Midwest and Plains states, providing continuing evidence of a regional economic slowdown.

A report issued Monday says the overall Mid-American Business Conditions Index dropped to 39.6 in December from 40.7 in November, 41.9 in October, 47.7 in September and 49.6 in August.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he again blames manufacturing losses linked to the strong dollar and economic weakness among trading partners.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests economic growth. A score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

NP Man, 24, Killed in Rollover Crash

LINCOLN-COUNTY-SHERIFF-1A 24-year-old North Platte man has died following a one-vehicle crash northeast of town, and authorities say it appears alcohol was a factor.

On January 3 at around 2:16 a.m., deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a one-vehicle accident on East Rolling Hills Road.

Investigators say the vehicle, driven by Kristian Woodhouse, was southbound on Rolling Hills Road when it failed to negotiate a curve, went out of control, up an embankment and rolled on its top.

Woodhouse was partially ejected from the vehicle and became pinned underneath it.  Deputies say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three females, who were also in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries.

Authorities say it does appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.

Money Offered for Bird Habitat Projects in Parts of Nebraska

USDALINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say farmers and ranchers in south-central and southeastern Nebraska have until Jan. 15 to apply for funding to improve grassland bird habitats.

A multiagency partnership has formed the Grassland Bird Initiative, which provides funding in 15 counties. The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide financial and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers to improve habitat for grassland birds such as bobwhite quail and greater prairie-chicken.

Cost sharing of up to 75 percent is available to begin such practices as resting rangeland and conducting special burns, to buy fencing materials and to set up watering facilities for livestock.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts will push for a new property tax relief package when lawmakers reconvene this week as well as a $26 million proposal to add more beds to Nebraska’s overcrowded prison system.

Ricketts tells The Associated Press he’s confident he and lawmakers will make progress in lowering property taxes despite a short legislative session, a projected $110 million revenue shortfall and millions of dollars in funding requests from state agencies.

Speaker of the Legislature Galen Hadley says he believes lawmakers will be able to enact some property tax reductions and prison reforms, although the steps taken may be small.

The budget-writing Appropriations Committee will look at several options to balance the budget, such as tapping the state’s record-high cash reserve.

Powerball Jackpot Expected to Grow to $400 Million by Wednesday

powerballDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The next Powerball winner will have a chance to claim one of the game’s 10 biggest prizes this week when the jackpot grows to roughly $400 million.

Lottery officials say no one claimed Saturday’s $334 million prize, although someone from Pennsylvania won $2 million and three players from California, Connecticut and South Carolina won $1 million in the game.

When the jackpot reaches $400 million, it might exceed the size of the sixth-largest prize in Powerball history. That was a $399.4 million prize won in 2013 by someone from South Carolina.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

The next drawing will be held Wednesday.

3 Hurt When Ice Chunk Falls Off Truck, Shatters Windshield Near NP

state-patrol-logoNORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A chunk of ice falling off a semitrailer truck on Interstate 80 caused a crash that injured three people and disrupted one girl’s trip to college.

The crash happened Saturday afternoon on I-80 near North Platte.

The chunk of ice penetrated the windshield of a 2003 Honda Odyssey and struck the driver and front passenger. Then the van veered into the median and rolled several times.

The driver, 18-year-old Kimberly Mangum, of Grovetown, Georgia, was flown to a Denver hospital with serious facial injuries.

Mangum’s 42-year-old father and 16-year-old brother were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released.

Nebraska State Trooper Ryan Hayes says the accident would have been worse if all three people in the van hadn’t been wearing seatbelts.

Nebraska Supreme Court Moves All Its Rulings Online

gavel-and-scaleLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rulings from the Nebraska Supreme Court and Appeals Court issued over the past 145 years are now available online, and new decisions will only be issued electronically.

The move will make the court decisions more readily available to anyone who wants to look up a famous case or wants to research genealogy.

Before this shift, people had to visit law libraries or pay fees to legal research companies like Westlaw to find the court decisions.

Supreme Court Justice William Cassel, who worked on the project, says this is a landmark change for the court.

The new site is online at www.nebraska.gov/apps-courts-epub/public/supreme.

Sidney Residents Waiting to Hear About Cabela’s Future

cabelasSIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Many Sidney residents are on edge as they wait for Cabela’s to announce what it plans to do.

The outdoor gear seller is evaluating strategic options because it is under pressure from an activist investor.

The developers of a Holiday Inn Express hotel near Cabela’s store and headquarters in Sidney have put the project on hold until the company announces its plan.

Cabela’s has close ties to its hometown of Sidney where it employs about 2,000 in a town of about 7,000.

Keith Nienhueser is vice president of Nienhueser Construction. He says Cabela’s drives nearly all the work his company does in Sidney.
