SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — The plans for a community solar power project that would provide enough electricity for nearly two dozen homes are moving forward in Scottsbluff.

The city council preliminarily approved the Nebraska Public Power District’s plan for the project.

But before the project will be built, NPPD wants to sign up at least 20 customers for the power. If more customers sign up, the size of the project could be enlarged.

Scottsbluff was chosen because it’s a hub for the utility in western Nebraska and has plenty of land available.

NPPD’s Tim Arlt says the city also has good prospects for solar power because it is on the western end of the state.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says an 81-year-old man from Sutherland has died after he was badly burned in an accidental fire Saturday afternoon.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, North Platte and Sutherland Fire Departments were called to a rural residence west of Sutherland at around 4:48 pm.

Deputies say it was reported that Fred Maire was badly burned while lighting a fire outside his home.

According to investigators, it appears Maire was attempting to light some articles of trash on fire in a burn barrel when part of his clothing caught fire.

Maire, who was badly burned, was transported to Great Plains Health.

While being treating at the hospital, Maire died as a result of his injuries.

The LCSO says Maire’s death has been ruled accidental.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Insurance is reminding consumers that Tuesday marks the open enrollment deadline for coverage that begins on Jan. 1.

The advisory is aimed at consumers who aren’t automatically re-enrolled and still want coverage. Consumers who purchase their insurance after Dec. 15 but prior to Jan. 15 can expect their coverage to begin on Feb. 1.

Department officials say consumers should not look not only at the cost but also the quality of a plan’s network as well as copays, deductibles and coinsurance.

Insurance Director Bruce Ramge says a gap in coverage can be “extremely problematic” if an individual suddenly gets sick or injured.

As of December 11, 2015, the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) reports that 225 men, women and children have lost their lives on Nebraska roadways.

This reflects an increase of 13 percent compared to fatalities reported for the same period for the previous four years.  With 20 days remaining in 2015, roadway fatalities may climb to its highest level since 2007, says AAA.

A review of the NDOR data shows that fatalities on urban area roadways have risen 42 percent compared to the average for the previous four years.

With 26 deaths, motorcycle fatalities are up 32 percent compared to the average for the years 2011-2014.  This is the highest number of motorcycle fatalities reported since 1987 when 31 deaths occurred.  Pedestrian deaths are up 71 percent with 18 fatalities reported so far this year, the highest number since 2000 when 20 pedestrians were killed and nearly 500 injured.

As we approach the busy holiday season, AAA urges motorists to use caution and be mindful and respectful of all riders and users of the roadway.  Driving distractions, such as using a cell phone, take your mind off the roadway.

Compromising roadway safety is the increase in alcohol consumption that typically occurs during the holiday period.  The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety reports that nearly a third of all fatal car crashes can be attributed to alcohol or drug impairment.  Drivers are advised to always use a designated driver after consuming alcohol or using any medications that may compromise a person’s ability to drive safely.  Lack of safety belt use is also a factor, says AAA.

Even though nearly 80 percent of all motorists use their safety belt, 74 percent of the vehicle occupants killed in car crashes on Nebraska roadways were not buckled-up.  Many unrestrained occupants were ejected from their vehicle.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials say they’re looking for ways to recover more than $54,000 that was spent on lethal injection drugs from a supplier in India.

A spokesman for Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday that Ricketts has directed Nebraska’s corrections department to review its purchase agreement with Harris Pharma.

Ricketts announced last week that the state would stop trying to obtain the drug until after a statewide vote on capital punishment next November. Taylor Gage, the governor’s public relations director, says it’s unclear at this time what recourse the state has to recover the money.

State officials have struggled to import the drugs because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said there’s no way to do so legally.

Some lawmakers have said they doubt the state will get its money back.

MAXWELL, Neb. (AP) — Organizers say more than 1,300 graves at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell will be decorated with wreaths to honor veterans.

The graves will be decorated Saturday during an annual wreath-laying ceremony.

Larry Steinbrink, post quarter master of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1504, says the cemetery has participated in the Wreaths Across America program for the last seven years.

Steinbrink has organized the local effort for the last four years and says the number of graves that have been decorated has increased.

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars take wreath donations throughout the year, but the final push for wreaths begins in November. He says that donations have come from across the state, Florida, New Mexico and Texas.

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will burn tree piles, as weather and snow cover allow, at several sites across the state.

Tree piles are created by the removal of invading trees in grassland or timber stands or from trees damaged in wildfires or storms. Removal of tree piles will open grasslands and timber for continued management, eliminate a wildfire fuel source and eliminate sites conducive to the germination of noxious and invasive plants. Late-season timber and grassland burns also will be conducted to suppress invading tree and shrub species from timber stands and grasslands.
