LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The president of the University of Nebraska system is working to deal with racism on campus and improve the college experience for all students.

President Hank Bounds attended a Black Lives Matter rally Thursday on the university’s Lincoln campus to hear from students on how he can make their college experience more inclusive and welcoming.

Bounds says he has made funds available for each campus in the University of Nebraska system to complete a diversity audit looking at its racial make-up, how curriculum addresses diversity and focusing on the experiences of students of color.

The Lincoln campus is also in the process of hiring a chief diversity officer. Bounds said the committee responsible for looking at applicants for the next Lincoln chancellor has been structured to represent the school’s diversity.

A student contacted Chadron police on Oct. 7, 2014, saying she’d been sexually assaulted two days earlier in Andrews Hall on the campus. Jungquist was arrested the following day but has since been freed on bond. He also was a Chadron State student at the time.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A southern Nebraska man has again been sentenced to more than 100 years in prison for killing his 2-year-old grandson.

Fifty-one-year-old Peter Draper was sentenced Monday morning in Adams County District Court. He was given 60 years for intentional child abuse resulting in death and 49-50 years for intentional child abuse resulting in serious injury. Judge Stephen Illingworth ordered that the sentences be served consecutively. Illingworth meted out the same sentences after Draper’s first trial.

The state Supreme Court in January overturned the Naponee man’s 2013 convictions in the death of Joseph Rinehart Jr. and granted him a new trial. The little boy died April 30, 2012.

Draper had appealed on the grounds that his wife should not have been allowed to be called as a witness for the prosecution.

Nebraska Inmate Sues State Prison Over Sex Allegations

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An inmate serving life for killing an Omaha woman is suing the state prison at Tecumseh in federal court for what he says was his unfair treatment over reports that he had sexual contact with two female prison employees.

The lawsuit claims a prison nurse discovered sexual activity between the inmate and a prison staff member in July.

The inmate says that following the discovery, he was handcuffed, put in a holding cell, questioned, humiliated and fired from his prison job.

State law says inmates cannot consent to sex with prison employees. No charges have been filed in the case, but the Nebraska State Patrol confirmed it’s investigating.

The AP generally does not name people who say they are sexual assault victims.

Former Central Nebraska Theater to Reopen

ord-neORD, Neb. (AP) — A former central Nebraska theater is set to reopen as a space for community events.

The former Ord Theater, which has been sitting unused, will reopen as the Golden Husk with a kickoff event on Saturday. The building was constructed in 1928, and has served as a theater, cinema and event space.

HomeTown Competitiveness Coordinator Dahn Hagge says that the opening will be the first effort to make space available for a variety of events in the city.

The Valley Performing Arts Theatre group purchased the space in July. The group hopes that the facility will host many events, including plays and operas. Hagge says the theater’s name was changed because the acoustic material in the walls was made of corn husks.
