Union Pacific Closing Railroad Repair Yard in Denver
DENVER (AP) — Union Pacific plans to close a repair facility in Denver and shift more than 200 jobs elsewhere because of the sharp decline in coal demand.
The railroad told workers at its Burnham Shop repair yard this week that the facility will close on Feb. 14.
Union Pacific spokeswoman Calli Hite says the number of coal trains originating in Colorado has declined 80 percent since 2005.
The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad plans to keep about 90 workers at another Denver facility. The other 210 workers can transfer or accept a severance package.
Hite says other Union Pacific shops in North Platte and South Morrill, Nebraska, and in North Little Rock, Arkansas, will take over the locomotive repairs that had been done in Denver.

Nebraska Savings Program for Those with Disabilities Begins in 2016

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new state savings program designed to help people with disabilities is set to launch next year.
State Treasurer Don Stenberg said Thursday that the Achieving a Better Life Experience program will be operational by summer 2016. First National Bank of Omaha will manage the program, which allows residents with certain disabilities to create tax-advantaged savings accounts.
Stenberg says the Nebraska ABLE program will be one of the first of its kind in the nation to become operational. The treasurer’s office will oversee the program.
The program allows adults with intellectual disabilities and their families to save for medical, housing and educational needs. In past years, disabled adults could have lost Medicaid coverage and Social Security benefits if they accumulated more than $2,000 in assets.
Nebraska Refugee Agency to Help Asylum-Seeking Syrians
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s largest refugee settlement agency says it will continue to help Syrians who are seeking asylum despite concerns raised by Gov. Pete Ricketts.
Lutheran Family Services says it will honor the governor’s request to suspend working with Syrians who wish to come to the country as refugees. But the group said that doesn’t prevent it from aiding Syrians who arrive by other means.
Ruth Henneman, the group’s vice president of development, says that includes helping Syrian families who have sought asylum in Nebraska since civil war engulfed their country in 2011. The organization has helped 10 such Syrians in the past three years.
Ricketts has asked the state’s resettlement organizations to halt efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Nebraska until security concerns are addressed.
