GERING, Neb. (AP) — A 26-year-old Scottsbluff man has been accused of using a baseball bat to threaten his mother while trying to rob her.

Online court records say J. Bradley Arnold is charged with terrorist threats, false imprisonment and other crimes. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Arnold’s behalf. Jail records say Arnold remained in custody on Tuesday.

Arnold was arrested at his mother’s house on Saturday. Officers had been sent there to check on her welfare.

She told police her son kicked in a door to get inside, demanded her car keys and money and grabbed her by the throat after menacing her with the bat.

Ricketts: Address Security Before Allowing Syrian Settlement

Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts says he does not want Syrian refugees resettling in Nebraska until the federal government conducts a full review of its screening procedures to ensure public safety.

Ricketts sent a letter Monday to refugee resettlement agencies in the state, urging them not to pursue resettlement of the refugees in light of the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Several U.S. governors have made similar statements amid heightened concerns that terrorists might use the refugees as cover to sneak across borders.

Ricketts says in the letter that while he understands the danger and persecution many are facing in the Middle East, it’s important to focus first on the safety of Nebraska residents and Americans.

Ricketts says he’s been told no Syrian refugees have been resettled in Nebraska.

AMA: Pot Use During Pregnancy May Pose Risks; Warnings Needed

pregnant-womanCHICAGO (AP) — The American Medical Association is pushing for warning signs about marijuana use during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Pot’s potential harms include premature birth, low birth weight and attention problems in children. The AMA says warnings should be posted at dispensaries that sell pot and on packages of marijuana sold for medical and recreational use.

The group adopted that stance at a policy-making meeting Monday in Atlanta. The AMA will seek regulations to put those warnings into effect.

Several states have requirements for health warnings on cannabis product labels, but the new policy says only Oregon requires a point of sale warning about use in pregnant or breast-feeding women.

Recreational use is legal in Oregon, Alaska, Colorado, Washington state and Washington, D.C. Medical use is legal in 23 states and Washington, D.C.

Attorneys Spar Over Lawsuit to Keep Death Penalty Off Nebraska Ballot

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A group that wants to retain Nebraska’s death penalty is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit that could prevent the issue from appearing on the November 2016 ballot.

However, death penalty opponents who filed the lawsuit argued in court Monday that the lawsuit should proceed.

The lawsuit argues that the ballot measure to reinstate the punishment after lawmakers abolished the death penalty is invalid because Gov. Pete Ricketts wasn’t listed as a sponsor.

Ricketts donated $200,000 to the effort, but has said his support for the petition drive didn’t make him a sponsor.

Nebraskans for the Death Penalty raised more than $913,000 and spent nearly all of it on the petition drive. The group has said the lawsuit is politically motivated.

NSP IDs Colorado Man as Victim of Fatal Collision with Deer

state-patrol-logoCOZAD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a 27-year-old Colorado man who died in a crash after his sport utility vehicle hit a deer on Interstate 80 in south-central Nebraska.

He’s been identified as 27-year-old Joshua Harris, of Denver.

The accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. Friday, about a mile west of Cozad. The Nebraska State Patrol says that after the SUV hit the deer, Harris overcorrected, sending the SUV into a guardrail and through a fence before it came to rest in a roadside ditch.

Harris, who was alone in the SUV, was ejected by the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Great American Smokeout is Thursday

Community Connections LogoNORTH PLATTE—“Quit like a champion!” is the theme of the Great American Smokeout, observed November 19 this year. The annual event was started by the American Cancer Society (ACS), and is always the third Thursday of November.

Tobacco Free Lincoln County Coalition (TFLC) is partnering with ACS, to encourage people to call upon the champion inside, and conquer the smoking habit. TFLC Coordinator George Haws said a champion needs cheerleaders and a coach. He recommends that people ask their friends and family members to be their cheerleaders. As for a coach, he suggests calling the Nebraska Tobacco Quit Line, at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).

People can also take advantage of local resources, like the quit classes at Great Plains Health. The number to call about the classes is (308) 696-7530.

The following “5-day countdown,” from a pamphlet published by Tobacco Free Nebraska, can also be helpful.

5 – First, set a date to quit. Tell your friends and family, so they can encourage you. Quit buying cigarettes. Think about your reasons for quitting.

4 – Pay attention to when and why you smoke. Think of habits or routines to change. Think of other things to hold in your hand instead of a cigarette.

3 – Think of who to reach out to when you need help. Think about what you will do with the extra money when you stop buying cigarettes.

2 – Talk to your doctor about the nicotine patch or other nicotine replacement products or medications. (You may need to make an appointment well in advance, to see your doctor.)

1 – The day before your quit date, throw away all cigarettes and matches. Put away lighters and ash trays. Clean your clothes to get rid of the cigarette smell.

0 – YOUR QUIT DATE: Remind family and friends that this is the day! Stay away from alcohol. Give yourself a treat or do something special!

If you slip and smoke, don’t give up. Set a new date and get back on track. And remember, eating healthy food and getting exercise will help, too.

Tobacco Free Lincoln County is a collaborative effort that focuses on keeping youth from starting to use tobacco, reducing access to tobacco products, and increasing awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke. It is funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement agreement.

NP Man Accused of Assaulting Pregnant Girlfriend

Macon Hehner

A North Platte man is facing a felony domestic assault charge after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, who is pregnant.

On Saturday, at around 5:41 pm, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the report of a disturbance between a man and woman in the area of 6th and Washington Streets.

An officer arrived and located the male suspect, but when he ordered the man to stop, he took off running.

Other officers converged on the scene and were able to apprehend the suspect, Macon Hehner, and restrain him.

Police say that when Hehner initially ran, he was carrying a bag, but no longer had the bag in his possession when he was apprehended.

An officer was able to locate the bag and found it contained brass knuckles, illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Officers made contact with the female, who claimed she was pregnant with Hehner’s child.  She stated that she had been allowing Hehner to stay in her house, but kicked him out when she discovered drugs.

She said when Hehner left the house, she followed him and contacted police.  Once Hehner discovered she was on the phone, the victim alleged that he slapped the phone our of her hand, causing injuries to her face and neck.

Hehner was placed under arrest and charged with felony domestic assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana-less than one ounce and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say the domestic assault charge was enhanced to a felony due to prior convictions and the fact the victim was pregnant.

They say more charges are likely one tests from the Nebraska State Patrol Lab are completed.
