200 Killed on Nebraska Roadways Over 4-year Period

roadThe number of people killed on Nebraska roadways over a four-year period is up nearly ten percent, according to AAA Nebraska.

As of November 12, 2015, highway fatalities on Nebraska roadways have climbed to 200, reflecting an increase of ten percent compared to fatalities reported for the same period for the previous four years.

Motorcycle fatalities are up 33 percent compared to the average for the years 2011-2014 with 26 deaths reported so far this year.  This is the highest number of motorcycle fatalities reported since 1987 when 31 deaths occurred.  Pedestrian deaths are up 60 percent with 16 deaths reported so far this year.  This is the highest number since 2000 when 20 pedestrians were killed and nearly 500 injured.  Bicycle fatalities have also risen with four fatalities in 2015, which is the highest level since 2001.  That year, nearly 300 bicyclists were injured in traffic crashes and five were killed.

AAA is asking all motorists to be aware and respectful of all riders and users of the roadway.  Driving distractions, such as using a cell phone, take your eyes and mind off of the roadway.  Get in the habit of turning your phone off each time you get behind the wheel.

Students to Use Social Media to Fight Nebraska Campus Racism

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two students are planning to use social media to start a conversation about racism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and on apps students download to their phones.

Sophomore Danielle Young and junior Gloria Kimbulu have created the #NotAtUNL campaign, which will run on Twitter from Monday to Nov. 20. The campaign aims to spread awareness of race-related issues that have occurred on the Lincoln campus by encouraging students to share their stories of racism.

The students say they hope the campaign will help steer the Lincoln campus from becoming “another Mizzou,” in reference to recent student protests of racism at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

UNL spokesman Steve Smith said administrators welcome the discussion and hope it will be a positive experience for students.

Nebraska Jailer Accused of Having Sex with Inmate

jailCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A Dawes County jailer has been accused of having sex with an inmate and providing inmates with a cellphone.

Court records say 31-year-old Sherry Whitinger is charged with sexual abuse of an inmate and with providing escape implements. Sheriff Karl Dailey said Thursday that Whitinger has been fired and is in custody. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Dailey says a review of an attempted escape in September by an inmate who isn’t linked to the sex abuse charge uncovered information that led to a Nebraska State Patrol investigation and the charges. A court document says Whitinger denied having anything to do with the escape attempt.

The inmate whom authorities say had a sexual relationship with Whitinger refused to answer the investigator’s questions.

More Than a Dozen Stores Get Rid of Tainted Beef from Omaha Supplier

cdcOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — More than a dozen Nebraska and Council Bluffs grocery stores have eliminated tainted beef from suppliers that used products from an Omaha meat-processing facility.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hasn’t listed any E. coli outbreaks in Nebraska or Iowa this week. The newspaper says local health departments weren’t available for comment Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a nationwide recall last week for more than 167,000 pounds of All American Meats Inc. ground beef products for possible E. coli contamination. The bacteria can cause death or illness.

More than 100 retailers in about 20 states were on a USDA-issued list of locations that might have tainted meat on their shelves.

Feds Don’t Want Ex-TierOne Exec to Spend the Winter in Florida; Judge Disagrees

tierone-bank

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A federal judge will let a former Nebraska banker convicted of fraud to spend some winter weeks in Florida while awaiting sentencing.

U.S. Magistrate Cheryl Zwart decided at a hearing Thursday that former TierOne Bank CEO Gil Lundstrom could spend several weeks at his vacation home in Naples, Florida, as he did last year while awaiting trial. He was convicted last week of 12 counts related to the bank’s failure in 2010. He’s free on bond and faces sentencing in Lincoln on Feb. 24.

Prosecutors objected to Lundstrom’s request to leave the state, saying he’s trying to sever ties with the community in which he was convicted and saying he’s a flight risk. Defense attorney Daniel Collins says Lundstrom isn’t severing his Nebraska ties and doesn’t pose a flight risk.

Fungus That Causes Bat-Killing Disease Found in Nebraska

northern-long-eared-batLINCOLN – The fungus known to cause white-nose syndrome (WNS) in hibernating bats, a disease that has decimated bat populations in the United States and Canada, was recently discovered for the first time in Nebraska.

The fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans – or P. destructans – was detected in samples sent to researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz for testing. The samples were collected in 2015 from bats hibernating in a mine in Cass County in eastern Nebraska. Northern long-eared bats, tri-colored bats and big brown bats tested positive for the fungus.

WNS has killed more than six million bats in North America since it was first discovered in New York in 2007. In some states, winter bat numbers have declined by more than 90 percent. Since it was first detected, WNS has been confirmed in 26 states and five Canadian provinces. The fungus has been detected in four additional states, including Nebraska.

“While the presence of the fungus is disappointing, it is not surprising,” said Mike Fritz, Natural Heritage zoologist with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “With the fungus being present in states around us and the migratory nature of bats, it was probably only a matter of time before it was documented in Nebraska.

“Although the fungus has been found in Nebraska, the signs of WNS – white fungal growth on the nose and lesions on the wings – have not yet been observed on any bats in the state,” he said.

Recent studies have shown that the value of insect control by bats to agriculture is worth several billion dollars annually. This value includes reduced crop loss to insect pests, reduced spread of crop diseases and reduced need for pesticide application.

WNS does not infect humans and is only known to affect cave-hibernating bats. The fungus thrives in cold, humid environments and invades the skin of bats, disrupting their hibernating behavior and depleting their fat stores.

“There is no cure for white-nose syndrome, “said Jeremy Coleman, National White-nose Syndrome Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “But researchers are studying several potential treatments that show promise for controlling the fungus and reducing impacts of the disease on bats.” These include bacteria and fungi that inhibit the growth of P. destructans, environmental manipulations, genetic modifications to reduce the virulence of the fungus, vaccines and other biologically-based anti-fungal compounds.

Researchers from the Commission, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Omaha and University of Nebraska-Kearney began monitoring mines for the fungus in 2014. Researchers are asking for landowners’ help in locating and accessing mines for tracking the spread of the fungus. Those with knowledge of such sites are asked to contact Fritz at 402-471-5419.

For more information about WNS, visit: whitenosesyndrome.org/, or contact Fritz at the Commission or Bob Harms of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 308-382-6468, extension 208.

NP Community Playhouse Presents ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’

WonderfulLifeThe North Platte Community Playhouse (NPCP) presents the second production of their 2015/2016 season, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

In our American culture, It’s a Wonderful Life has become almost as familiar as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The story is a natural for a stage adaptation: the saga of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been quashed by family obligation and civic duty, whose guardian angel has to descent on Christmas Eve to save him from despair and to remind him—by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born—that his has been, after all, a wonderful life.

This faithful adaptation has all your favorite characters: George and Mary Hatch, Clarence, Uncle Billy, Violet, and, of course, the Scrooge-like villain, Mr. Potter. It not only celebrates the faith of the season, it also celebrates the American philosophy of life: hard work, fair play and the love and support of one’s family and community will be rewarded.

Tickets are available at the North Platte Community Playhouse Box Office, 301 E. 5th, Monday through Friday from Noon-5:00 pm, online at www.northplattecommunityplayhouse, or at the door prior to each performance.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students, with discounted pricing available for groups of 10 or more.

Performances will be held November 13, 14, 15 and 20, 21, 22, with Friday and Saturday performances beginning at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.

This production is made possible, in part, by the support of the Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment for the Arts, NPCP Patrons, and the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation.

The production is directed by Carolyn Clark.

It’s a Wonderful Life is produced through at special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Inc.
