Son of Nebraska Man Who Died Wants Bars Held Liable for Overserving

liquor-salesOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The son of a man who died after fracturing his skull at an Omaha bar says Nebraska should hold bars liable for injuries and deaths caused by drunken customers.

Michael Drahota fell in the bar’s bathroom and slipped into a coma after drinking over six hours in January. He died two months later. State law doesn’t cover overserving adults, unlike Iowa and many other states’ so-called “dram shop” laws.

Drahota’s son, Mike Drahota Jr., says he’s working to get a new dram shop law introduced during next year’s legislative session.

The bar was given a 20-day suspension of its liquor license by the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. The bar’s manager says it will avoid the suspension by paying $2,000 in fines.

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A 23-year-old Scottsbluff man has been accused of abusing his 6-month-old daughter.

Authorities say Michael Medbery was arrested after officers investigated a hospital report of head injuries to the girl.

Jail records say Medbery remained in custody on Monday. It’s not clear whether Medbery has a lawyer who could be contacted to comment on Medbery’s behalf. Online court records don’t yet list the case.

The child’s mother wasn’t home when the injuries occurred. The child was flown to a Denver hospital for treatment.

gavel-moreMCCOOK, Neb. (AP) — Another McCook man has been given probation and ordered to help pay restitution for stealing and shooting an Angus heifer.

41-year-old Donald Slone Jr. was sentenced last week to 24 months of probation. He’d made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of theft.

His sentence echoed one given his accomplice, 22-year-old Brandon Deater. The two were accused of shooting the animal in August 2014. Court documents say $3,000 in restitution has been paid to the owner of the heifer.

NP Police Continue to Investigate Alleged Abduction, Rape

north_platte_patchIt’s been a little less than a week since a North Platte woman reported that she was abducted by three men and physically and sexually assaulted, and police say they still have no new information in the case.

According to the North Platte Police Department, a call came in at around 1:09 a.m., last Wednesday morning, regarding a possible missing person.

The caller, a family member, reported that a 22-year-old female had failed to pick up their child at the caretaker’s after getting off work.

They said the female called and said they were on their way at around 10:30 p.m., on Tuesday, then failed to show up.

Police, with assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, were able to locate the woman’s vehicle, still running, along the NPPD canal road just north of State Farm Road.

A Nebraska State Patrol aircraft was called in to assist and authorities began searching for the woman.

At around 6:29 a.m., a motorist came across a partially clothed woman along South Highway 83, just north of State Farm Road, and contacted police.

Officers responded and determined that the woman was the female they had been looking for. The woman told police that she had stopped for three men after leaving work.  She said the men then forced her into their vehicle, against her will, and transported her to an unknown location south of North Platte where they allegedly physically and sexually assaulted her.

She was transported to Great Plains Health for the treatment of unknown injuries.

As of Monday morning, police say they are still actively investigating the case but have no new information.

At this point, police have not released details on any potential suspects or a potential suspect vehicle.

The Post has unconfirmed reports that the woman stopped for the men because they were posing as law enforcement with red flashing lights and flashlights.  Law enforcement has not commented on this.

Law enforcement recommends that you call 911 if you are suspicious about a traffic stop by an unmarked vehicle.  However, we want to reiterate that we have not confirmed reports that the suspects were posing as law enforcement officers.

We will continue to follow this story closely and will provide you with any new information that becomes available.

Nebraska Officials Market State’s Crops in Europe

nebraska-department-of-agriLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials hope their trip to Europe will boost exports of the state’s crops.

The Agriculture Department officials left Friday to visit Bulgaria and Germany. The trip is possible because the state received a $70,000 federal grant.

Agriculture Director Greg Ibach says he hopes to establish new relationships in Bulgaria while boosting existing ones in other European markets.

Nebraska’ exported roughly $506 million worth of crops to Europe last year, but exports to Bulgaria have been minimal.

Officials to Close Historic Nebraska Highway for Winter

lincoln-highwayOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Douglas County will close a stretch of Old Lincoln Highway for the winter in an effort to protect the longest-remaining original brick stretch of the nation’s first coast-to-coast highway.

The county will ban traffic on the historic three-mile stretch of brick road that runs from 174th Street west to 201st Street after the first snow deep enough to plow. Douglas County engineering manager Dan Kutilek says it will then remain closed through March.

The Douglas County Board approved the plan, which calls for the historic highway to be closed every winter.

Kutilek says salting, applying brine and plowing snow takes a heavy toll on the old road, eating away at its concrete base and chipping away at the bricks.

Text-to-911 Service Spreading Through Rural Nebraska

911-ServicesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New technology that lets cell phone users send texts to their local 911 call center is spreading through Nebraska, including rural areas where supporters say it could help save lives.

The service is already in place in Douglas, Buffalo and Washington counties, but smaller counties are now asking the state for money to add the service at their facilities.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission says at least six counties have filed funding requests to install the service in their jurisdiction.

Jeff Pursley, the commission’s executive director, says the service is intended to help people who can’t call authorities directly, such as domestic violence victims who want to do so quietly. It also could assist the hard of hearing, or those in areas with poor coverage.
