NORTH PLATTE — Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park (SHP) located in North Platte will have a celebration on August 22, 2015 for the park’s 50th anniversary.

Visitors viewing William Cody’s mansion and Scout’s Rest Ranch barn will have an excellent experience with blacksmith demonstrations by a relative of Buffalo Bill Cody, living history events and character reenactments including Buffalo Bill himself during park hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Come learn about the history of Buffalo Bill and see the bison and new calf Taco.

At 3 p.m. at vintage baseball game will be played with 1864 rules, equipment and uniformed players from the era between the North Platte Buffalos and the Colorado Territorial All Stars.

A Dutch oven buffalo stew feed complete with homemade ice cream and cobbler dessert will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is available while the food lasts. Cost for the feed is $5 per person. Live music and campfire with S’mores will follow outside Scout’s Rest Ranch barn.

Visitors can camp at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Recreation Area (SRA) campgrounds and enjoy hiking, birdwatching, trail rides or a peaceful day on the water kayaking, tubing or canoeing.

A Nebraska Park Permit is required on all vehicles visiting the SHP and SRA. Daily permits are $5; annual permits are $25, both are available at the ranch. Admission price for the entire day of fun is $1 for children 3-12, $2 for anyone 13 and older, children under three are free.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A scholars program based at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is offering college students a chance to conduct scientific research.

The INBRE program allowed Nebraska Wesleyan University student Carlie Pickrel to research this summer how the Epstein-Barr virus, a herpes strain commonly found in the human body, facilitated or hampered the growth of certain cancers.

She presented her research earlier this week to 23 other undergraduate students in the program, as well as other biomedical researchers.

INBRE is funded through the National Institutes of Health. The program is available in 24 states, plus Puerto Rico, which aren’t traditionally competitive in receiving federally funded grants for scientific research.

SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A hearing has been scheduled for a western Nebraska police chief who’s been sentenced to jail for obstructing government operations.

Friday’s hearing in Cheyenne County District Court will determine whether Sidney Police Chief B.J. Wilkinson will serve 30 days. He’d pleaded no contest and was convicted last month. City officials have declined to comment on the chief’s conviction and appeal.

The charge stems from what state prosecutors say was Wilkinson’s failure to pursue criminal charges against city Public Works Director John Hehnke, after Hehnke’s ex-girlfriend filed a complaint in January 2014 against Hehnke.

Concerns about Wilkinson’s decision not to seek charges against Hehnke were brought to the attention of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. Earlier this year Hehnke was charged with two misdemeanors.

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an 86-year-old man died after an all-terrain vehicle rolled over on him in northwest Nebraska.

A news release from the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office and attorney’s office says deputies were called to a rural residence on Saturday afternoon to investigate the death of Wayne Brickner. Family members had found his body near his home.

Investigators determined that Brickner had been spraying weeds on a steep incline when the ATV rolled over and across him, causing chest injuries.

If there’s one subject that has been a hot-button issue around the City of North Platte, it’s the Iron Eagle Golf Course.

After recent flooding caused major damage to the course, Landscapes Unlimited, the company that manages the course, had requested just over $25,000 to repair the damage and return the course to a fully functional 18-hole course.

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, four council members voted against authorizing the money for repairs to the course, which has flooded numerous times.

The council is slated to debate Iron Eagle’s 2015/2016 budget at a 4:30 p.m. meeting today.  Landscapes Unlimited will most likely attempt to fund the repairs through the budget.

 

 

 

 

 

A North Platte woman has been charged after she allegedly participated in the assault of a 24-year-old man.

At around 12:45 p.m., on July 28, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the Emergency Room at Great Plains Health on the report of a man who had been assaulted.

Officers arrived and found that the man had sustained multiple injuries.  He alleged that two males and a female had assaulted him at two separate unknown locations, one inside the city limits of North Platte and one somewhere outside of them.

The victim alleged that 20-year-old Jessica Castor participated in the beating and drove the vehicle used to transport the victim to both locations.

On August 3, officers met with Castor and placed her under arrest.

Castor was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center and charged with felony 1st-degree assault, felony kidnapping, and felony robbery.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.  No other arrests have been reported at this time.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The National Park Service has announced creation of a new Midwest Region Office of American Indian Affairs and has named a program manager for it.

A Park Service news release says Reed Robinson has been given the job and will be leaving his post as deputy superintendent at Badlands National Park, which is near Interior, South Dakota.

Park Service spokesman Mike Johnson said Tuesday that the new regional office will be administered from the Midwest Regional Office of the Park Service in Omaha, but Robinson will remain based in Rapid City.

Johnson says Robinson’s primary role will be serving as a liaison between tribes and the park service.
