Jeffers, 2nd Street Intersection to Be Closed Wednesday

road-workOfficials with the Nebraska Department of Roads say road work will force the closure of a North Platte intersection on Wednesday.

Weather permitting, the intersection of Jeffers and 2nd Streets will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic, as well as pedestrian traffic on July 15.

NDOR says the intersection of Jeffers and 3rd Streets will be open to accommodate both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Motorists are urged to use caution in and around the work area, and are reminded to always buckle-up, every trip.

Study: Silent Cancer for Moms a Rare Result in Prenatal Tests

pregnant-womanCHICAGO (AP) — For pregnant women, abnormal results from certain prenatal tests may signal something is wrong with the moms-to-be, not the fetus.

That’s according to a preliminary study that says very rarely, these results may indicate cancer when follow-up testing indicates a healthy fetus.

Prenatal blood tests are increasingly being used to detect fetal chromosome abnormalities, including Down syndrome. They test pregnant women’s blood, which contain small amounts of fetal DNA. But cancer is among conditions that can cause results that mistakenly indicate an abnormality in the fetus. The results echo smaller studies but they’re not definitive.

The researchers say more studies are needed to help doctors decide how to advise women about these tests.

The study was published online Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Soldiers Grave Has New Headstone Thanks to Nebraska Group

sons-of-the-american-legionCALLAWAY, Neb. (AP) — The grave of a Civil War soldier has a new headstone thanks to the efforts of a local organization in central Nebraska.

Before the headstone was put in place, the only memorial at Henry Barnacassel’s grave was an old silver marker with slide-in letters falling off and an incorrect emblem of his service.

Vice commander Tim Hiatt of the Sons of the American Legion in Callaway says the group simply set out to do the right thing by getting a headstone for Barnacassel.

The project led the organization on an unexpected journey, bringing members and Barnacassel’s family together to honor the soldier more than 90 years after he died.

Nebraska Tax Receipts Beat Projections in Last Fiscal Year

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state government collected more tax revenue than projected in the fiscal year that ended on June 30.

The Department of Revenue said in a news release Monday that net receipts for the fiscal year totaled about $4.3 billion, which was 2 percent higher than the state’s certified forecast. The state had been projected to receive a little more than $4.2 billion in tax revenue.

Net sales-and-use and individual income taxes were slightly lower than projected for the year, while net miscellaneous taxes were about 2 percent above the state forecast. Net corporate income taxes were nearly 32 percent above the state’s projections.

The comparisons were based on the forecast made by the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board in February 2014.

At around 2:30 a.m., on July 12, an officer responded to the 400 block of West Eighth Street on the report of a found electric mobility scooter.

Then, at around 6:00 a.m., an officer observed Christopher Mounteer attempt to move the scooter.

Following further investigation, Mounteer was taken into custody and charged with felony possession of stolen property.

Additionally, officers found two small baggies containing suspected meth on Mounteer’s person, along with drug paraphernalia.  As a result, Mounteer was also charged with felony possession of metamphetamine.

Nebraska Groundwater Regulators Join Forces to Form Basin-Wide Water Plan

groundwaterLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some of Nebraska’s groundwater regulators are joining forces to ensure that their districts’ long-term water supply remains sustainable.

The natural resources districts also hope to qualify for state water project money approved by Nebraska lawmakers last year. Districts can only qualify if they work together to create a basin-wide water management plan, rather than focusing on their specific area.

The Middle Niobrara NRD board announced last week that it has partnered with four neighboring districts within the Niobrara River basin. The river is a popular spot for tourists in a basin that covers a large portion of northern Nebraska.

Mike Murphy, the NRD’s general manager, says the districts are trying to work proactively to preserve their water supply for agriculture, cities, business development and recreation.

US Soldiers Opposed to War Now Find Canada Less Hospitable

soldierBUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — When Army Sgt. Patrick Hart went to Canada a decade ago rather than serve in the war in Iraq, he expected to be welcomed the same way as thousands of American military war resisters during the Vietnam era.

Instead, after five years of wrangling with the Canadian immigration system, he came back to the U.S. — and ended up in military prison.

Canada has developed a much less hospitable reputation than it once had. Supporters say no U.S. soldier who has filed a claim to legally stay in Canada over the past 10 years has been successful.

With an estimated two dozen soldiers still waiting out their fate in Canada, the resisters’ movement is seen as nearing a crossroads. With a national election in October, supporters are hopeful for a Liberal Party victory and more sympathetic stance.

Experts: Cattle Need Extra Care in Coming Sweltering Days

cattleLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says cattle will need extra care as the weather in Nebraska becomes hotter.

The department’s Agriculture Research Cattle Service says precautions should include checking water sources and developing a plan to have an emergency water source available. Plans could include contacting neighbors with firefighting equipment to hose down cattle that are experience heat stress.

Cattle with reduced lung capacities from previous sickness and black-hided cattle are more susceptible to heat.

The department says that while sprinklers can be used, overusing them can create more humidity, which in turn could increase a lot’s heat index.
