‘Tomorrowland’ Takes Top Spot at Box Office on Slow Weekend

box-officeLOS ANGELES (AP) — Disney’s fantasy adventure “Tomorrowland” topped the slow Memorial Day weekend box office with an estimated $41.7 million debut from its first four days in theaters.

The Brad Bird-directed family film starring George Clooney cost a reported $180 million to produce and was expected to earn somewhere in the $50 million range over the holiday weekend, which is down significantly from last year, according to Rentrak estimates Monday.

“Tomorrowland” just narrowly beat out last weekend’s champion, Universal’s “Pitch Perfect 2,” which brought in an estimated $38.5 million over the four-day weekend.

Meanwhile, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” took the third- and fourth-place spots, while Fox’s “Poltergeist” remake debuted in fifth place, with an estimated $26.5 million.

Small Herd of Purebred Bison Growing on Prairie in Nebraska

WOOD RIVER, Neb. (AP) — A small herd of purebred bison in south-central Nebraska has been growing with the births of at least six calves so far this spring.

The animals have been adjusting to their new home on more than 1,000 acres of tallgrass prairie on Crane Trust land southwest of Grand Island.

The 41 bison — also known as buffalo — were trucked in from Rimrock Ranch near Crawford in the Nebraska Panhandle in January. Trust officials don’t know how many of the 12 mature cows and five heifers will give birth and add to the herd this year.

Experts say that of the 500,000 bison in North America, about 5,000 are genetically pure, descended from bison that have never been bred with cattle.

Divers Resume Searching River for Missing NP Teens

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Divers have resumed searching the South Platte River for two teenagers who have been missing since Monday.

Officials have said 17-year-old Alexis Wiezorek and 18-year-old Noah Ramos have been missing since late Monday.

Wiezorek drove around several barricades and then into the river, which had washed out part of a road.

For several days, conditions on the river were too dangerous for divers, but they were able to return to the river Sunday.

Authorities have located an object with sonar that may be the car, but divers were unable to reach it last week.

Federal Grant Worth $1.8M Goes to 3 Nebraska Water Projects

waterOGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — Three Nebraska projects will share $1.8 million in federal grants to help strengthen the Ogallala aquifer.

The Nebraska grants are part of a national program of $6.5 million of grants in the eight states above the Ogallala aquifer.

The Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District plans to use its grant to promote conservation of irrigation water.

The Little Blue Natural Resources District hopes to conserve 18,000 acre-inches of water per year with better conservation practices.

The Central Platte Natural Resources District wants to reduce water consumption by reducing irrigation in the area.

Farmers in those parts of the state who are interested in participating in the programs should contact their natural resources district to apply for conservation money.

Death Penalty Foes See Nebraska Vote as Momentum-Builder

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — With Nebraska on the brink of outlawing the death penalty, opponents of capital punishment hope this week’s veto-override vote in the Legislature will build momentum for their cause in other Republican states.

Whether that happens is uncertain, but Nebraska isn’t the first right-leaning state to consider banning capital punishment this year.

A bill to abolish the death penalty in Montana came within one vote of passing in February in the Republican-led state House. In Kansas, a GOP state representative took the lead in introducing a repeal bill this year.

Nebraska lawmakers voted 32-15 last week to abolish the death penalty. Gov. Pete Ricketts says he’ll veto the bill and is urging residents to contact their senators and voice support for capital punishment.

Kearney Official Seeks Resignation of State Liquor Official

nebraska-liquor-control-comKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A Kearney City Council member has called for the resignation of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission director and for an audit of the agency.

Kearney City Councilman Bruce Lear requested the resignation of commission director Hobert Rupe and the audit in a letter to Rupe and Gov. Pete Ricketts.

The letter followed the commission’s decision earlier this month to reverse the city of Kearney’s revocation of a local restaurant’s liquor license. City officials voted to revoke the restaurant’s license after it sold alcohol to underage patrons three times between 2011 and 2014.

Lear says the commission “implements its own rules without regard to the input of the communities it’s supposed to serve.”

ACLU of Nebraska: Lethal Injection Docs Raise New Questions

aclu-nebLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska civil liberties group says records detailing the state’s purchase of lethal injection drugs are likely to prompt more costly litigation.

Records obtained and released Friday by the ACLU of Nebraska show that Chris Harris, CEO of the India-based Harris Pharma LLP, contacted state officials on April 14 to ask if they wanted a few thousand vials of sodium thiopental.

ACLU of Nebraska director Danielle Conrad says the emails and documents raise questions about the “shady foreign source” that sold the drugs, the price paid, Nebraska’s compliance with importation laws and the efficacy of the drugs it bought.

A spokesman for Gov. Pete Ricketts says a thorough reading of the documents shows the drugs were legally purchased, and notes that the ACLU has lobbied for years against capital punishment.

Ricketts Appeals to Public to Flip Death Penalty Votes

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is ramping up pressure on lawmakers to try to keep them from overriding his promised veto of a death penalty repeal bill.

The Republican governor urged the public on Friday to contact their state senator and voice their support for capital punishment.

Lawmakers gave the repeal bill final approval on Wednesday with a 32-15 vote. At least 30 votes are needed to override a gubernatorial veto, so Ricketts has to flip at least three.

Ricketts says he has argued to several lawmakers that the Nebraskans he talks to overwhelmingly support the death penalty, and prosecutors need it to protect public safety.

Ricketts has argued that lawmakers are out of touch with the public. Death penalty opponents are working to ensure that support for the bill holds.

Nebraska Senators Urge EPA to Back Biofuels Industry

epaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska senators are pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to hold its support for renewable fuels when drafting rules that could limit amounts of ethanol blended with gasoline for fuel.

Forty-two of Nebraska’s 49 senators signed a letter sent to EPA administrator Gina McCarthy Thursday, urging her to consider the impact of modifying the market for the ethanol industry that contributes $5 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Supporters worry oil companies are lobbying to decrease the amounts of ethanol required in fuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The letter says the Nebraska ethanol industry employs more than 1,300 workers and supports 3,300 other jobs.

The EPA is expected to release oil industry draft rules for 2016 on June 1.
