Students Urged to Attend Nebraska Range Camp

4hHALSEY, Neb. (AP) — Students ages 14 through 18 who want to learn about the outdoors are encouraged to attend the 52nd Nebraska Youth Range Camp.

The camp is scheduled to run June 8-12 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey.

The camp curriculum includes sessions on rangeland management, conservation, ecology, animal science and wildlife. There will be field activities, lectures, hands-on sessions and recreational leadership and team-building activities.

Camp director Shelly Kelly with the Sandhills Task Force says registration costs $325 but students will pay no more than $100, with either the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition or local natural resources districts picking up the remainder.

The camp application form can be found at https://bit.ly/1ExWpuP or can be obtained by sending an email to Shelly@SandhillsTaskForce.org. Applications must be submitted by May 29.

US Gas Prices Rise 22 Cents Per Gallon

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average national price of a regular gallon of gasoline has jumped 22 cents in the past three weeks to $2.80.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that higher crude prices caused by a weaker U.S. dollar and strong gasoline demand drove the increase.

However, she says the price was 93 cents lower than a year ago.

The average national price for midgrade was $3.00 and premium was $3.16. Diesel was $2.97.

In a survey of cities in the Lower 48 states, Los Angeles had the highest-priced gasoline at $3.95 a gallon. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had the lowest at $2.32.

The average price in California was up 53 cents to $3.76 a gallon.

Lundberg says gasoline price hikes will likely slow or stop because of an expected increase in supplies.

2 Marines with Nebraska Ties Die in Nepal Helicopter Crash

marine-corpsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two U.S. Marines with Nebraska ties were among the six Marines and two Nepalese soldiers killed last week in a helicopter crash in Nepal.

On Sunday, the Defense Department identified all the Marines killed in Tuesday’s crash.

One of the pilots, Capt. Dustin Lukasiewicz, grew up in Wilcox, Nebraska, before joining the Marines.

Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Hug was working as a videographer on board the flight delivering supplies to earthquake victims. Hug is an Arizona native, but several of his family members live in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska.

Nepalese soldiers recovered the bodies of the eight people who died in the helicopter crash on Saturday.

Storms, Scattered Tornadoes Hit US Midsection; Cause Damage

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A powerful storm system stretching from Texas to Minnesota raked the nation’s midsection Sunday after kicking up damaging tornadoes in Oklahoma and heavy wind and rain elsewhere.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths or injuries.

Tornadoes touched down Saturday in Oklahoma near the towns of Elmer and Tipton, said National Weather Service forecaster Daryl Williams. He says another tornado touched down near Elk City along Interstate 40. Authorities say yet another tornado reportedly touched down late Saturday northeast of Tulsa as storms moved off into neighboring Missouri.

Oklahoma emergency officials say they also received reports of damage Saturday to homes and businesses and significant damage to power lines. Rain and winds were also moving overnight across parts of Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas and other states.

Nebraska Attorney General: Officials’ Texts Are Public Record

cellphoneOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office says that public officials’ text messages regarding public business are subject to the state’s open record laws.

But Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert on Friday said she doesn’t yet know whether she’ll comply with the opinion from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office that said she should produce her text messages.

The newspaper asked the state’s top legal office in April to clarify the status and public’s access to officials’ texts involving government business. That request came after the city of Omaha denied the newspaper’s request for texts Stothert sent to City Council members and department heads.

Opinions issued by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office are advisory and not legally binding.

Storms, Heavy Rains Move Across Nation’s Midsection

NOAA-NWS6NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Another round of strong storms and heavy rain is moving across the nation’s midsection.

The National Weather Service had issued tornado watches Saturday for areas including parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Nebraska. In Minnesota, the weather service says a trained observer reported a brief tornado touchdown just before 4:30 p.m. in Lac qui Parle (lak-kwih-PARL’) County, on the South Dakota border. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Jared Guyer of the Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said there was a risk of large hail, strong winds and several tornadoes, adding that “certainly, some of those tornadoes could be strong.” The greatest chance of severe weather stretched from southern Nebraska to central and western Kansas and Oklahoma.

Last weekend’s weather caused several tornadoes, flooding and at least four deaths.

Plains States on Alert for Another Round of Severe Weather

severe-weatherNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters say the Midwest could be in for another round of strong storms and heavy rain.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center says that severe thunderstorms may develop in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas on Saturday.

The center says there is a risk of large hail, strong winds and several tornadoes with the system.

The greatest chance of severe weather stretches from southern Nebraska to central and western Kansas and Oklahoma.

Last weekend’s weather caused several tornadoes, flooding and at least four deaths.

Feds to Help Farmers, Ranchers in Ogallala Aquifer Region

agricultureCLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — Federal officials say farmers and ranchers who depend on the Ogallala Aquifer will benefit from $6.5 million in funding.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week that it would be investing in projects in a handful of states with the goal of conserving billions of gallons of water to extend the life of the aquifer.

Underlying eight states, the Ogallala supports nearly one-fifth of the wheat, corn, cotton and cattle produced in the United States. It has long been the main water supply for communities throughout the Great Plains and is being depleted at an unsustainable rate.

In eastern New Mexico, the Natural Resources Conservation Service plans to work with farmers to convert irrigated cropland to dryland systems and to restore grasslands.

Projects also are planned in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Texas.

ACLU of Nebraska to Investigate New Lethal Injection Drugs

aclu-nebLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The ACLU of Nebraska is investigating the state’s purchase of new lethal injection drugs to carry out executions.

The civil liberties group filed an open records request Friday to review whether the acquisition was lawful.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Thursday that state officials have bought all three drugs required for executions. Nebraska lost its ability to execute prisoners when its supply of sodium thiopental, a required lethal injection drug, expired in December 2013.

ACLU of Nebraska executive director Danielle Conrad says the state has faced legal problems in its past efforts to obtain lethal injection drugs, and her group will hold officials accountable.

Nebraska Solicitor General Jim Smith, who handled previous death penalty cases, has said the issues raised in past cases were later resolved.
