KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a man after a grass, rubbish and vehicle fire at a Buffalo County property.
Kearney officials say firefighters were sent to the scene northeast of Kearney Regional Airport about 2:20 p.m. Monday, and the fire was under control by 3 p.m.
The man’s body was found in one of the vehicles. His name hasn’t been released. An autopsy has been ordered.
The fire cause also is being investigated.
Police Chief Mike Swain is pleased to announce the following awards given to exemplary employees of the North Platte Police Department:
Each year the North Platte Police Department holds regular inspections of their uniformed officers to ensure they maintain a high standard of uniform dress and overall appearance. All uniformed officers compete for this honor each year.
Police Investigator Tim Dowhower has been named Best Dressed Officer of the Year for 2014.
Inv. Dowhower has served with the North Platte Police Department for 14 years; he is currently assigned to Community and Technical Services as a School Resource and a DARE Officer for the North Platte School District.
Officers are given three sets of summer uniforms and three sets of winter uniforms. The uniform provided by the department is everything but socks and underwear.
The department takes care of uniforms when they are torn, but officers are responsible for washing and, if they choose, ironing their uniforms.
Evidence Technician Gayle Reed has been named North Platte Police Department’s Employee of the Year for 2014.
For the last 13 plus years, Gayle Reed has been an evidence technician for the North Platte Police Department. Now, the department is rewarding her service by honoring her as the 2014 Employee of the Year. Reed has worked for the police department for 36 years.
The 2014 Employee of the Year has an important role at the police department and in the justice system. Reed is responsible for packing and the storing of evidence.
In addition to her evidence responsibilities she takes care of found items and towed vehicles. Reed says she feels good about her job.
Every year since 1983, an employee of the department has been recognized. All of the department’s civilian employees are eligible for the honor.
Chief Mike Swain said the Employee of the Year Award is the department’s way of noticing employees who have gone above and beyond.
Anyone in the department can nominate someone for the distinction.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State senators will debate whether to outlaw small flame-powered paper air balloons in Nebraska.
A legislative committee voted 7-0 on Monday to advance a bill that would ban the sale, possession and use of paper lanterns.
The lanterns are made of flame-retardant paper and lifted by hot air from open flames at their bases. They’re often released into the sky at memorials or celebrations.
But the bill’s advocates say the lanterns create dangerous fire hazards if they land in neighborhoods or dry fields. If the bill passes, violators would face a $100 fine.
Hot air balloons large enough to carry people would be not included in the ban.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — BNSF railroad has started taking additional safety measures for crude oil shipments because of four recent high-profile derailments in the U.S. and Canada.
The railroad said Monday that is slowing down crude oil trains to 35 mph in cities with more than 100,000 people and increasing track inspections near waterways.
The Fort Worth, Texas, based railroad also is stepping up efforts to find and repair defective wheels before they can cause derailments.
BNSF spokesman Michael Trevino says these additional safety efforts began in response to the recent derailments. One was earlier this month near Galena, Illinois, and the Mississippi River.
The number of rail accidents remains relatively small compared to total rail traffic, but fiery accidents involving crude oil are increasing because U.S. and Canadian oil production is booming.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A ballot measure that could give Nebraska lawmakers an extra four years in office has won initial approval in the Legislature.
Senators gave the constitutional amendment proposal first-round approval on Monday with a 27-12 vote.
The current proposal would allow lawmakers to serve up to three consecutive four-year terms in office, if voters approve it.
Lawmakers have to approve it twice more. Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus says his proposal could be changed to allow two consecutive six-year terms instead.
Term limits went into effect in 2006 under a voter-approved constitutional amendment that limited lawmakers to two consecutive four-year terms.
Schumacher says the extra time is important to preserve institutional knowledge in the one-house Legislature.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska senator’s comment comparing police to the Islamic State terrorist group is continuing to provoke debate in the Legislature.
The comment by longtime state Sen. Ernie Chambers came up again on Monday and filled up most of the Legislature’s morning debate time. Many lawmakers condemned the comments during debate last week.
During a committee hearing this month, Chambers said “my ISIS is the police” because officers are licensed to kill and pose a threat to his neighborhood. Chambers said he isn’t a man of violence, but if he carried a gun, he would use it as protection against police and would want to shoot first and ask questions later.
Chambers has refused to apologize for the comments.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska mothers-to-be will have better employment protection under a bill headed to a final vote in the Legislature.
Senators advanced a measure Monday that would require employers to acknowledge physical limitations of pregnancy and make accommodations for employees. The bill also would bar discrimination against pregnant women in employment practices like hiring or firing.
The bill by Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha won second-round approval on a voice vote.
Mello says the bill complies with a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold an appeals case by a pregnant woman who asked for job accommodations similar to those available to workers with physical disabilities.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A report by a Nebraska tax-policy think tank says the state has cut taxes significantly over the last decade, reducing the revenue available for other priorities.
The OpenSky Policy Institute said Monday that tax cut packages enacted since 2005 are expected to cost the state $840 million in revenue per year by 2024. Income tax cuts are expected to account for $487 million of the reductions.
The group says the decreased revenue has contributed to the growing reliance on property taxes. The group, which often emphasizes the need for school funding, says the decline leaves less money available for K-12 schools and state services.
