Report: $10.2B Needed for Nebraska Roads Over 20 Years

roadLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Roads has identified $10.2 billion in projects that it says are needed over the next 20 years.

The annual report was released on Monday at a legislative hearing.

Randy Peters, the department’s director, says about half of Nebraska’s construction money comes from the federal government. Some revenue also comes from the Build Nebraska Act, a state law that diverts sales tax revenue into roads projects.

The department estimates that $6.6 billion is needed for pavement restoration and $3.3 billion is needed for rural bridges and reshaping rural roads over two decades. Another $285.6 million will be needed for urban road- and bridgework, and $179.6 is required for railroad crossings.

Funding needs were identified by department staff, the State Highway Commission and the public.

Researches Say Apple Devices at Risk

AppleSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Security researchers say they’ve discovered a vulnerability in Apple’s software, called “Masque Attack,” that hackers could use to steal sensitive information from iPhones or iPads by tricking device owners into downloading a malicious app.

The app can be designed to look like an update for a legitimate app the owner is already using for email, banking or other purposes, according to researchers at the FireEye cyber-security company. Hackers can send the malicious app in a link, contained in a “phishing” email or text that looks like it comes from a trusted source.

FireEye says it hasn’t seen any hackers use the flaw yet. But it’s warning users not to install apps that don’t come from the official Apple store. FireEye says it has notified Apple, which did not immediately comment.

Nebraska Lawmakers Hopeful Session Will Be Productive

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Many of Nebraska’s senior senators are expressing hope that the Legislature and Gov.-elect Pete Ricketts will collaborate next year on property taxes and an overhaul of two state agencies.

Lawmakers will convene on January with 17 new members who were elected to seats that came open due to term limits. Some senators say they anticipate more debate over property taxes. They’re also likely to debate reforms for Nebraska’s prison system and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Ricketts, a Republican, cruised to a victory Tuesday amid promises that he would seek to lower property taxes and draw more manufacturing jobs to the state.

Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha says he’s optimistic that lawmakers and Ricketts will find common ground even if they don’t agree on every issue.

Gas Prices Continue to Drop in US

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A national survey of gas prices reports that the average cost of U.S. regular grade gas dropped 13 cents per gallon in the last two weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the average for regular grade gas is $2.94 per gallon, while midgrade averages $3.18 and premium $3.34. Retail diesel averages $3.64.

Lundberg said the price has dropped 78 cents per gallon since its peak in May.

She said the drop has been driven by a decrease in the price of crude oil. She forecasts that will come to an end now unless oil prices drop further.

In the Lower 48 states, San Francisco had the highest average price at $3.27 per gallon, while Memphis, Tennessee, had the lowest average at $2.65.

The average price for a gallon of regular in Nebraska is $3.08.

Nebraska Authorities Seek Man Who Killed Puppy

Scotts-Bluff-County-SheriffSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are looking for the person who killed a puppy on a western Nebraska roadside.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says witnesses reported seeing a man throwing a puppy across the road on Thursday night.

One witness told authorities she had heard a puppy crying and saw the man throw the puppy across the road. She said the dog tried to crawl under a truck to hide, but the man picked up the puppy and threw it to the ground at least three more times.

Sheriff’s deputies say they found the dog dead. It was a female tan and white collie mix with a pink collar.

Witnesses told deputies that the man who killed the dog got into a small black pickup with a white camper shell.
