NP Mom, Son Jailed Together After Driving Debacle

When we think of quality time with our mother, we probably don’t consider a trip to jail.  However, that’s exactly what happened with one North Platte mother and her son.

At around 11:38 p.m., on November 5, a North Platte Police officer on patrol in the 1900 block of Rodeo Road, observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

The officer conducted a traffic stop, and as he approached the vehicle, the driver, Lucas Sellers, got out and began to walk away against the officer’s orders.

Police say Sellers eventually turned around and acknowledged the officer, then began to walk away again.

The officer was able to catch up to Sellers and place him under arrest.  He reported that Sellers smelled alcohol and appeared to be under the influence.

As the officer was dealing with Lucas, the passenger in the vehicle, his mother Pamela Sellers, moved over to the driver’s seat and started the vehicle.

When the officer told Pamela to shut the vehicle off, she drove away.

Another officer was able to conduct a second traffic stop on the vehicle, and make contact with Pamela, who was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

After both mom and son failed their field sobriety tests, they were placed under arrest for driving under the influence of liquor and obstructing the police.

It was then discovered that a five-year-old child was in the vehicle.  As a result, both were charged with child abuse.

Police say the child was placed in the care of a responsible adult, and the Sellers were taken to jail.

Lucas refused to take a breath test, and picked up another misdemeanor charge for that.

Former NP Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 12 YO Girl

Quaine Day
Quaine Day

A former North Platte man is facing a sexual assault charge after he allegedly assaulted a young girl.

According to North Platte Police, an investigation began in August of 2013, after a 12-year-old girl reported that she had been sexually assaulted by 32-year-old Quaine Day.

Police say an interview was conducted with the girl at the Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center, and she disclosed that Day had sexually penetrated her on multiple occasions over the past year.

The incidents allegedly took place at several different locations in North Platte.

Authorities say that several other subjects were interviewed, and corroborated the girl’s allegations.

Investigators determined that probable cause existed to arrest Day for 1st degree sexual assault of a child, but they say he had moved to Colorado and they were unable to locate him.

On Wednesday, Day was arrested on a felony warrant, however, the details of his arrest are not known at this time.

Day is jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center, where he is being held on $250,000 bond.

Ricketts, Heineman Meet to Discuss Transition

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — With the election over, Nebraska Gov.-elect Pete Ricketts is preparing to make the transition to office.

Ricketts met with outgoing Gov. Dave Heineman on Thursday to talk about the state budget process, personnel issues and other matters related to the office’s day-to-day operations.

Ricketts says he has called newly elected senators to congratulate them after Tuesday’s election, and expects to make staffing announcements soon. Heineman, the state’s longest-serving governor, says he’s confident that Ricketts will hit the ground running.

Heineman and Ricketts say they haven’t yet discussed who will appoint a senator to replace Charlie Janssen, of Fremont. Janssen was elected state auditor on Tuesday and will have to resign from his legislative seat.

Ricketts will be sworn in as Nebraska’s 40th governor on Jan. 8.

Outgoing Nebraska Senator to Step Down Early

Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh
Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska state senator whose term expires in January says he plans to leave office early.

Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha made the announcement Thursday. Lautenbaugh says he plans to focus on his law practice. He may also pursue work as a lobbyist.

Lautenbaugh thanked his colleagues in a letter. He says he appreciated the chance to serve despite a final year that he described as “joyless,” because of competing demands in the Legislature and his law practice while he cared for ailing parents.

Lautenbaugh, a Republican, was appointed by Gov. Dave Heineman in 2007. He was elected to finish his predecessor’s term in 2008, and re-elected to a four-year term in 2010. Republican Brett Lindstrom, an Omaha financial adviser, will take his legislative seat in January.

NSP Encourages Winter Weather Preparedness

winter-driving(Lincoln, Neb.)- November 6, is Winter Weather Awareness Day and the Nebraska State Patrol is encouraging motorists to prepare themselves and their vehicle for winter time travel.

“Awareness and preparation are keys when planning your travel during the winter months,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We encourage all motorists to have a winter weather survival kit and to know before you go, when winter conditions are forecast.”

The Nebraska State Patrol issues the following reminders for motorists traveling in extreme winter weather conditions:

  • Use well-traveled routes and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
  • Let others know when you are leaving, when you will arrive, and what route you are taking.
  • If you do become stranded while traveling, stay with your vehicle until help arrives. Wind chill and freezing temperatures can be life threatening
  • If your vehicle does become stuck, run your motor sparingly, make sure your tailpipe is clear of snow or debris and keep a window cracked to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide.
  • Carry a red flag or bandana in your car to attach to the outside to signal you are in trouble.

Be sure to include a winter weather survival kit in your vehicle. The following are some basic items to keep in your vehicle should you become stranded in wintry weather.

Emergency first aid kit Ice scraper, shovel, small bag of sand
Mobile phone, charger, batteries High energy or dehydrated foods
Blankets or sleeping bag, extra set of clothing and winter accessories Flashlight  include extra batteries (cold weather reduces battery strength
Jumper cables, tow rope, tool kit Both a large and small can
Matches and candles Red flag or bandana

Motorists are encouraged to check the latest road closures and conditions by utilizing 511 Nebraska’s Traveler Information System. The system can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year by dialing 511, or through Internet access <https://www.511.nebraska.gov/>.  A Nebraska 511 mobile app is also available to download at no cost for smartphone users. Simply search your App provider for Nebraska 511.

Motorists in need of non-emergency roadside assistance can call the Nebraska State Patrol Highway Helpline when safe to do so by dialing *55 from any cell phone or 1-800-525-5555.

Col. Sankey said, “When driving in changing weather conditions, never travel faster than circumstances allow and always buckle up.”

Slain Nebraska Jailer’s Sister Accused of Stealing Tax Return

Amanda Baker
Amanda Baker

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A Scottsbluff woman is accused of stealing and spending the tax refund of her sister, who was fatally attacked while working at the Scotts Bluff County Jail.

26-year-old Cassandra Baker is charged with theft and with use of a financial device. Her sister, 24-year-old Amanda Baker, was attacked in February. An inmate, Dylan Cardeilhac, of Torrington, Wyoming, is charged with murder and is scheduled for trial later this month.

Cassandra Baker’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.

Court documents say Amanda Baker filed her federal and state tax returns for the tax year 2013 before her death. The documents say her federal refund of nearly $4,300 had been deposited onto a prepaid credit card that Cassandra Baker obtained.
