Kids’ Poisonings Linked to Anti-Addiction Medication

Medical-ChartCHICAGO (AP) — A federal study says an anti-addiction drug used to fight the nation’s heroin and painkiller abuse epidemics poses a threat to young children.

The risk is to kids who accidentally swallow relatives’ prescriptions, and some have even died.

The drug is called buprenorphine (boo-pruh-NOR’-feen). The study found it’s the adult prescription medication most commonly implicated in young kids’ emergency hospitalizations. It can cause life-threatening breathing problems in kids.

Most cases involved tablets from pill bottles. The authors say recent packaging changes including individually wrapped medicine may reduce the problem.

The study was published Monday in Pediatrics.

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his grandmother at the home she shared with him in Columbus now has no chance of getting out of jail.

A judge decided Friday that Chase Micklevitz should be held without bond. He is facing charges of second-degree murder and using a weapon to commit a felony.

Micklevitz’ lawyers had asked for the hearing because they hoped his $1 million bond might be cut in half. But instead the option of posting bond was eliminated.

Police have said he stabbed 58-year-old Deanna Micklevitz four times on July 30 with a kitchen knife. Prosecutors say Deanna Micklevitz identified her grandson as her attacker in a 911 call that day.

Nebraska Governor Candidate Sues Over GOP Ticket

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Libertarian candidate for governor is suing to have former Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann’s name returned to the Nebraska ballot as the running mate for Republican gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts.

Mark Elworth Jr. filed the suit Friday in Lancaster County District Court. In it, he requests a writ of mandamus to require Secretary of State John Gale to certify Heidemann as the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. Elworth cites state law that says the last day for a candidate nominated in the primary election to withdraw is Sept. 1.

Heidemann withdrew a week later on Tuesday after a judge granted his sister a protective order against him.

Gale’s office has already certified the ballots that include Mike Foley as Ricketts’ running mate.

Nebraska AG Candidate Made Call to Try to Help Heidemann

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Republican candidate for attorney general sought to intervene on behalf of former Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann as Heidemann’s sister sought a protection order against him.

Doug Peterson, the GOP attorney general candidate, called the attorney of Heidemann’s sister, Lois Bohling, after she applied for the protection order.

Bohling’s attorney, Steve Mercure, told the newspaper that Peterson threatened to file a defamation lawsuit if Bohling proceeded with her request. Peterson denies that, saying he only called to ask if Bohling had received a letter from Heidemann asking for a family reconciliation and suggesting family counseling.

Heidemann resigned from office Tuesday and withdrew from the Republican gubernatorial ticket after a judge granted Bohling a domestic abuse protection order against Heidemann.

Nebraska Lawmakers Say Ridesharing Firms Welcome

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lawmakers say ridesharing services are welcome in Nebraska if they follow the state’s rules and consult with regulators.

Members of the Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Thursday repeatedly asked representatives of Lyft and Uber why they started Nebraska operations without Nebraska’s permission.

Nebraska Public Service Commission investigators have begun ticketing ridesharing drivers for operating without a commission permit. Lyft and Uber representatives have said the services don’t fit the definition of a common carrier and thus don’t fall under commission jurisdiction.

But Lyft attorney David Levy told the committee that Lyft has proposed a temporary operating agreement with the state that would let it temporarily offer service in Nebraska until a long-term legislative or regulatory solution is found.

A North Platte woman has been charged with a felony after she allegedly stole medication from her place of employment.

At around 10:32 a.m., on September 11, an officer with the North Platte Police Department responded to Centennial Park Retirement Village, 510 Centennial Circle, on the report of a theft of medication.

According to Investigator John Deal, staff members suspected that an employee, 27-year-old Chelsey Osborn, was stealing medication from residents.

Deal said it was suspected that Osborn was logging that residents were requesting Hydrocodone when they hadn’t.

She would then allegedly log that she had given the medication to the resident, and take them herself.

The officer met with Osborn and, following questioning, determined that this had been taking place for several months.

Osborn was placed under arrest and charged with theft and felony possession of hydrocodone.

She was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 23 for assaulting jailers at the Buffalo County Jail in Kearney.

Audun Green pleaded no contest to two felony counts of assault by a confined person and one of attempted assault.

Authorities say Green already was serving a sentence for assault when the jail incident occurred on March 11. Authorities say Green refused to cooperate with jailers who approached him about kicking his cell door. They suffered minor injuries when he fought their attempts to restrain him.
