A Cheyenne, Wyoming man, convicted of severely beating a man at a Hershey truck stop, will spend the next five to ten years in prison.

Martin Davidson appeared in Lincoln County District Court for sentencing on Monday.

Last September, deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Western Truck Stop in Hershey on the report of an assault.

Deputies arrived to find the victim with serious injuries, after being assaulted by Davidson.

Officials say the victim let a cigarette in the bathroom of the truck stop, and was approached by Davidson who asked him to put it out.

They say the two men then began arguing, and Davidson unleashed a beating by punching and kicking the man.

According to prosecutors, the victim was transported to Creighton University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, and sustained permanent damage to one eye.

District Court Judge Donald Rowland stated, prior to sentencing, that the victim accrued well over $100,000 in medical costs and lost wages, not to mention the permanent physical damage he sustained.

Davidson’s attorney, Blaine Gillette, addressed the court saying that Davidson had no crimes of violence on his record, and no felony convictions, which he asked the court to take into consideration prior to sentencing.

Judge Rowlands then sentenced Davidson to five to ten years in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services for 1st degree assault.

He was given credit for 359 days served in the Lincoln County Detention Center.

road-workGERING, Neb. (AP) — Bridge work is scheduled to begin this coming week on Nebraska Highway 71 in Scotts Bluff County.

The Nebraska Roads Department says expansion joints will be replaced at five bridge locations. There will be lane closures and reduced speeds.

The work is expected to be finished this fall.

Women Will Remain Minority in Nebraska Legislature

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Women will remain a minority in the Nebraska Legislature next year no matter who wins in November.

Women now hold 10 seats in the 49-member Legislature. Three will leave office in January because of term limits. Six women are running for the first time, all in districts represented by men.

If all incumbents and the first-timers win, there would be 13 women in the Legislature.

Civic and political groups say they’re troubled to see relatively few women legislators in a state where women comprise slightly more than half of the population. Some are trying to draw more into the public realm.

Lona Ferguson of the Nebraska Federation of Republican Women says her group helps run “campaign schools” with the state party to recruit more women. Democrats are undertaking similar efforts.

US Gas Prices Fall, Extending Summer Decline

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A national survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped 2 cents over the last two weeks, to $3.46, bringing the decline to 25 cents over the last 11 weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that falling crude oil prices drove the declines, although the drop was more moderate than earlier this summer. If crude prices don’t rise, Lundberg says prices at the pump may fall more as refiners shift to winter-grade gasoline, which costs less to produce.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had the lowest price among cities surveyed in the Lower 48 states, with $3.11 a gallon. San Francisco had the highest at $3.88 a gallon.

The average price for a gallon of midgrade gasoline was $3.67 a gallon, and premium was $3.83.

In Nebraska, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.36.

If Buildings Deemed Unsafe, Tenants Must Move in Nebraska

slum-apartmentLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska tenants can be forced to move on short notice when authorities decide apartment buildings or homes are unsafe if landlords won’t make repairs.

Nebraska is unusual in that it doesn’t require landlords who refuse to make repairs to pay any of their tenants’ relocation costs.

In Lincoln, Tina Tafoya will officially lose her apartment near the Capitol on Monday morning. Tafoya had less than two weeks to find a new home and a deposit, and she lives on a $698 monthly disability check.

Mary Morris-Braun, who works helping tenants at Lincoln’s Community Action Partnership, says this situation is uncommon, but it would be a big help if landlords were required to help with moving expenses in these cases.
