Ex-Gering Council Member Undecided on Ballot Move

city-of-geringGERING, Neb. (AP) — Former Gering Council Member Jill McFarland says she hasn’t decided yet whether to have her name removed from the November ballot.

McFarland, who resigned from the council last month, was reprimanded by the council on Monday for emails she’d sent to other council members and derogatory comments she’d made while still in office.

She’ll be listed as a candidate for re-election unless she files with the county to have her name removed.

Nebraska Innovation Campus Gran Opening Set

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A grand opening will be held this week for the conference center at Nebraska Innovation Campus, the new research and technology park on Lincoln’s old Nebraska State Fairgrounds.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman will make remarks at the grand opening Thursday.

The center provides multi-functional meeting and collaboration space that includes a 400-seat auditorium, 400-seat banquet room, eight breakout rooms and five catering options.

The Innovation Campus is designed to be a public-private partnership with a plan to be comprised of over 2.2 million sq. ft. of research, meeting and office space at full capacity, with up to 5,000 people working on the campus.

Kearney Hospital Cafe Might Not Reopen for Months (Video)

good-samaritan-cafe-floodKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — It could be several months before the flood-damaged public cafeteria reopens at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

It was damaged after around 4 inches of rain Friday night overwhelmed the city’s storm sewer system early Saturday. Water rushed into the lowest level of the hospital, damaging the kitchen, the cafe and other areas. No patients or employees were injured.

Hospital spokeswoman Marsha Wilkerson said Wednesday that the kitchen providing food for the public Central Cafe and for patient meals was flooded, so walls will be taken down to the studs for repairs and equipment must be replaced.

Full food service to patients was restored by Saturday evening, thanks to a temporary kitchen that’s been set up and aid from other Catholic Health Initiative facilities.

Burger King Nixes Low-Calorie ‘Satisfries’

burger-kingNEW YORK (AP) — Burger King is getting rid of the lower-calorie french fries it introduced less than a year ago.

The Miami-based chain said in a statement that it gave its North American franchisees the option to continue selling the fries earlier this week. Only about 2,500 of the approximately 7,500 locations opted to continue selling them as a permanent item. The others have started phasing them out.

The french fries, called “Satisfries,” gained widespread attention online when Burger King introduced them in September. The company said the fries used a different type of batter to prevent some oil from being absorbed by the potatoes in the frying process.

Overall sales at established restaurants in the U.S. and Canada have remained weak, with the figure up just 0.4 percent in the latest quarter.

NP Man Charged with Felony After Fight with Girlfriend, Cops

Paul Cooper

A North Platte man has been charged with a felony after he allegedly fought with his girlfriend and North Platte Police.

At around 4:00 p.m., on August 12, officers responded to a residence in the 2300 block of East 5th Street, on the report of a physical disturbance.

Upon arrival, a 51-year-old female advised that her boyfriend, 53-year-old Paul Cooper, had assaulted her.  The victim said Cooper pushed her against a wall, then scratched both her arms and hands.

Following further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest Cooper.

As officers attempted to take him into custody, Cooper struggled and resisted their efforts.

Eventually, Cooper was subdued and taken into custody.

Cooper was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed on charges of felony resisting arrest and 3rd degree domestic assault.

Deadline to Clear Up Health Law Eligibility Near

health-care-reformWASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says the clock is ticking for hundreds of thousands of people who have unresolved issues affecting their coverage under the new health law.

Officials said Tuesday that letters are going out to about 310,000 people whose citizenship and information documentation doesn’t match what the government has on file.

These consumers will need to upload their documentation to HealthCare.gov by Sept. 5, or mail it in.

Otherwise their coverage will end Sept. 30.

Of the 8 million people who signed up for private coverage through President Barack Obama’s law, more than 2 million at one point had discrepancies of some sort that affected their eligibility.

That number has been greatly reduced — but the remaining cases are proving difficult to clear up.

NP Man, 72, Accused of Sexually Assaulting Girls, Ages 12 and 13

Francisco Garcia
Francisco Garcia

A 72-year-old North Platte man is in jail after he allegedly sexually assaulted two girls at his apartment.

On June 4, North Platte Police opened an investigation into a sexual assault after receiving a complaint from a 12-year-old female, that she and her 13-year-old friend had been sexually assaulted.

Both juveniles were interviewed at separate Child Advocacy Centers, and stated that, on June 3, they had been swimming at the apartment complex located at 221 West Francis.

They say Francisco Garcia invited them up to his apartment.  Once in the apartment, the girls said Garcia paid them to perform a sex act and sexually assaulted them.

Following further investigation, police determined that there was probable cause to arrest Garcia and charge him with two counts of 1st degree sexual assault of a child.

An investigator met with Garcia on August 12, and placed him under arrest.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Suspended License Leads to Drug Charges for NP Woman

Chrystal Lowe
Chrystal Lowe

A North Platte woman if facing a felony drug charge after police spotted her driving on a suspended license.

At around 7:00 p.m., on August 12, an officer with the North Platte Police Department was on patrol when he observed a vehicle, being driven by 31-year-old Chrystal Lowe, in the 200 block of West 9th Street.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, the officer had knowledge that Lowe’s driver’s license was suspended.  After confirming the license suspension, the officer conducted a traffic stop.

During the stop, Lowe consented to a voluntary search which led to the discovery of multiple types of prescription drugs for which she did not have a prescription.

Following further investigation, Lowe was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance-Clonazepam, and four counts of possession of a legend drug, or drugs requiring a prescription.  She was also cited for driving under suspension.

Lowe was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
