OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The value of cropland in Nebraska continues its upward climb, rising 6.6 percent from a year ago to an average of $5,180 an acre.

The value of cropland has been on the rise in many states in recent years. Nebraska cropland has increased 113 percent since 2010.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in a report released Friday the average value of farm real estate in Nebraska — a measurement of the value of all land and buildings on farms — climbed 11.4 percent to $3,120 an acre.

The state trend reflects a similar increase nationally. The USDA says U.S. cropland value is up 7.6 percent and farm real estate values rose 8.1 percent.

The annual report is based on producer surveys completed in the first two weeks of June.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old Gibbon man died in a three-car crash near Kearney.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened about 7 a.m. Friday at the intersection of 56th Street and Antelope Avenue, northeast of Kearney.

A 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by the Gibbon man failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a 2013 Chevrolet pickup driven by 54-year-old Scott Frauen, of rural Kearney.

After the collision, one vehicle struck a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro stopped at the intersection. It was driven by 25-year-old Nathan Finley, of Kearney.

The 2007 pickup rolled and ejected the driver, who died at the scene. The sheriff’s office didn’t release his name until relatives could be notified.

SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old Chappell woman has been fatally injured in a western Nebraska traffic accident.

Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub says the woman was driving east on U.S. Highway 30 a little after 11:30 p.m. Thursday when her vehicle ran into a westbound vehicle driven by a teenage boy. The accident occurred about four miles east of Sidney.

Schaub says the woman was flown to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, where she was pronounced dead. The boy was taken to Sidney Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

The names of those involved and other details haven’t been released. The collision is being investigated.

An inmate being held at the Lincoln County Detention Center on a sexual assault of a child charge attempted suicide Thursday evening.

At around 8:00 p.m., on July 31, officers from the North Platte Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to the Lincoln County Detention Center on the report of a male inmate that had attempted to hang himself in his cell.

The inmate, 43-year-old Christopher Taylor, was found unconscious and transported to Great Plains Health by North Platte Rescue.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, Taylor is currently in intensive care at Great Plains Health.

Taylor was arrested on July 30, after he was accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s daughter.

Brown said an active investigation is being conducted by the NPPD because the incident occurred at the jail.

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old Wyoming man who was shot by a Nebraska police officer during a standoff has been given three years of probation.

Matthew Schwab was sentenced on Thursday in Scotts Bluff County District Court in Gering. He’d entered a no contest plea to terroristic threats as part of deal with prosecutors, who dropped two other counts.

Officers say Schwab failed to drop a handgun during a standoff on Jan. 21 in Scottsbluff. A police officer eventually shot Schwab, hitting him in the upper body.

Court records say Schwab has since moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — Bail has been set at $1 million for a 19-year-old Columbus man accused of fatally stabbing his grandmother.

Chase Micklevitz (mihk-LEH’-vihtz) faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 58-year-old Deanna Micklevitz. Police say she was stabbed four times Wednesday afternoon with a kitchen knife at the home she shared with her grandson. She was taken to Columbus Community Hospital and then flown to a Lincoln hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon her arrival.

A Platte County jailer said Friday that Micklevitz remained in custody. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

Micklevitz’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13.

DETROIT (AP) — Ignition switch problems that have plagued General Motors and Chrysler have now turned up in the motorcycle business.

Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 3,300 FXDL Dyna Low Rider bikes because engine vibration can turn the switches from “run” to “accessory.”

The recall covers motorcycles from the 2014 ½ model year. If the motorcycles have been modified to rev higher than 5,600 RPMs, an engine mount bracket can vibrate excessively, causing the problem.

If the switch goes to “accessory,” the engine can shut off while being driven and potentially cause a crash. The company says there have been no crashes or injuries reported from the problem.

Dealers will replace the bracket assembly and ignition switch knob for free. Harley began notifying owners in late July.
