Proposed Nebraska Power Line Draws Opposition

nppd(AP) — One of Nebraska’s biggest utilities wants to build a 220-mile power transmission line across the Sandhills, but the project is drawing strong opposition from some environmental groups.

Nebraska Public Power District officials will discuss the preferred route they have developed for the power line at public meetings this week.

Project backers say the new line would boost wind power development in Nebraska and strengthen the electric transmission network in the region.

Rancher Dave Hutchinson says he’s especially worried about damage that could be caused to the sandy soils in the area during construction.

NPPD spokesman Mark Becker says the utility has experience doing construction work in the Sandhills and will repair any damage.

NP Police to Enforce Trespassing Violations on South River Bridge

north_platte_patchCiting recent safety concerns, North Platte Police are cracking down on pedestrians crossing the South River Bridge.

Construction began on the bridge in mid-April, and is expected to take until Fall of this year to complete.  The Nebraska Department of Roads announced that pedestrian traffic across the bridge would be prohibited during “Phase 1” of the project.

However, many pedestrians have ignored the posted notice, and are using the roadway to cross the bridge.  In an effort to keep pedestrians from walking across the bridge and impeding traffic, police say the “Sidewalk Closed” signs will be replaced with “No Trespassing” signs.

Officer Rodney Brown says the police department will be notified, and will enforce any violations.

Brown said bicycles are allowed to ride over the bridge with the flow of traffic, but said they are only permitted to use the open lane of traffic.  He said cyclists are not allowed to use what remains of the old walkway or any other method to cross the bridge.

As for pedestrians, officials say they can borrow a bike, seek another path or take advantage of the city Public Transit service.

“Walking in the roadway and impeding traffic is not permissible,” Brown said.

Public Transit can be contacted at 308-532-1370.

Nebraska Irrigation District Worker Dies After Falling Into Fire

ambulance-lights(AP) — A western Nebraska irrigation district employee has died after falling into a blazing ditch, where he was burning weeds.

The accident occurred Friday afternoon, killing 67-year-old Llewellyn Mattern. Investigators say Mattern, who worked for the Pathfinder irrigation district, slipped down a ditch embankment and fell an estimated 11 feet into the fire.

Deputy Scotts Bluff County Coroner Jeremy Anderson says Mattern was taken to a Scottsbluff hospital with severe burns over 75 percent of his body and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. An autopsy is planned next week.

Lawsuit Over Lincoln County Jail Settled

lincoln_countyjail(AP) — A settlement has been reached between Lincoln County and contractors over the botched construction of a jail that opened in 2011.

According to the agreement, the county will keep the remainder of the money it owed Roche Constructors, general contractor for the project, estimated at $273,000.

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners is expected to sign the agreement when it meets Monday.

Concrete floors and the jail’s roof had to be replaced before the jail opened, and the county later filed a claim citing a whole host of other problems, including broken curbs, water leaks and mold.

NP Man Threatens to Stab, Shoot Friend

Wade Krahulik
Wade Krahulik

A North Platte man has been charged with two felonies after he allegedly threatened to kill a man with a knife and shoot him.

According to North Platte Police, officers received a report of a disturbance in the 1100 block of East 5th Street, on Friday, at around 12:50 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with 46-year-old Wade Krahulik and two other people.

An investigation revealed that Krahulik and his girlfriend had a mutual male friend.  Police say Krahulik didn’t approve of the relationship that had developed between his girlfriend and their friend.

Krahulik allegedly confronted the man and displayed a large knife.

Authorities say he threatened to kill the man with the knife, stabbed it into his own pickup which was parked nearby, and threatened to shoot him with a gun.

Police were able to locate the knife, and placed Krahulik under arrest for felony terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Netflix Raises Prices by $1 for New Subscribers

netflix(AP) — Netflix is raising its Internet video prices by $1 per month for new customers and giving its current U.S. subscribers a two-year break from the higher rates.

The changes mean anyone signing up for Netflix’s video subscription service beginning Friday will pay $9 per month for in the U.S. The old price of $8 per month will continue until May 2016 for Netflix’s existing 36 million U.S. subscribers.

The price increase, Netflix’s first in nearly three years, isn’t surprise. The Los Gatos, California, company disclosed its plans to raise its rates last month without specifying the precise amount.

Netflix Inc. say its needs more money so it can afford to pay for more original programming along the lines of its Emmy award-winning political drama “House of Cards.”

Nebraska May Seek Waiver from US Education Law

nebraska-department-of-education(AP) — Nebraska education officials may change course and seek a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind law.

The Nebraska Board of Education hasn’t made its decision yet. But department staffers are trying to determine whether the state standards for students and the development of an accountability system could make a waiver from the No Child Left Behind requirements more feasible. The law requires 100 percent proficiency in reading and math by this year.

More than 40 states and Washington, D.C., have waivers. Nebraska officials say they originally found that the waiver requirements would have been as burdensome as the No Child Left Behind requirements.

But when the No Child Left Behind law is reauthorized, it likely will include many of the waiver provisions.
