Nebraska Farmers Starting to Plant Spring Crops

planting-corn(AP) — Nebraska farmers are just beginning to plant their spring crops, but the U.S. Agriculture Department says conditions remain dry across a large part of the state.

The USDA says much of western Nebraska continues to experience severe drought.

And only about 46 percent of the state’s topsoil and 39 percent of its subsoil has adequate or surplus moisture.

The USDA estimates that 59 percent of Nebraska’s winter wheat is in good or excellent shape.

About 4 percent of the corn crop has been planted, which is a bit behind the average of 6 percent at this point in the year.

Chadron to Dedicate New Firefighting Air Base

chadron-airport(AP) — The city of Chadron will host an airport fly-in breakfast to dedicate its new firefighting air base.

The event is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Chadron Municipal Airport. The base will help provide service to a new Single Engine Air Tanker, an airplane that will be stationed there part-time to fight wildfires.

Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m., with Nebraska state Sen. Al Davis and Chadron Mayor Karin Fischer.

The event is open to the public, and Young Eagle airplane rides will be available. Firefighters and fly-in pilots can eat for free; others eat for a donation.

Chadron City Manager Wayne Anderson says the event seeks to recognize the team effort required to finish the air base.

Better Technology Cited in NSP Consolidation

state-patrol-logo(AP) — Officials say better technology is allowing the Nebraska State Patrol to save money as it consolidates its dispatch centers down to three from six.

For example, the new technology will let a dispatcher in Omaha send a trooper in Scottsbluff to a call in Alliance.

The patrol superintendent is Col. David Sankey, and he says that although dispatchers will be farther from the troopers they’re directing, he doesn’t think that will pose problems.

But Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says he’s concerned that dispatchers elsewhere won’t know the layout of northeast Nebraska.

The first dispatch operation to close will be the Norfolk center in May. The second phase will be implemented by summer 2015. A committee will determine which center will close next.

The consolidation is expected to save $750,000.

Former Kearney Pastor Sentenced for Sexual Assault

thomas-jones(AP) — A former Kearney church youth pastor faces up to 40 years in prison for sexually assaulting three boys.

37-year-old Thomas A. Jones was sentenced Monday in Buffalo County District Court. Jones was convicted of two counts of felony sexual assault of child, two counts of felony third-degree sexual assault of a child and one count of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutors say the incidents took place in Kearney between 1999 and 2006. In each case, Jones exposed himself to the boys, touched their private parts or was involved in oral sex with them.

Jones was sentenced to 17 to 40 years in prison. With good time credit, he could be eligible for parole in 8 ½ years.

Nebraska Man Pleads No Contest in Death of Ex-Wife

Michael Petersen
Michael Petersen

(AP) — A Nebraska man accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife and former divorce attorney has pleaded no contest in the death of his ex-wife.

Michael Petersen entered the plea Monday in Hall County District Court for the Buffalo County charge.

Petersen, of rural Glenvil, faced two counts each of first-degree murder and use of a weapon for the Nov. 13 slayings of 52-year-old Todd Elsbernd and 58-year-old Nancy Peterson.

Elsbernd was shot with a rifle outside his Grand Island law office. Police say that earlier in the day, Nancy Petersen was found dead outside her rural Buffalo County home.

Prosecutors agreed to drop the weapons charge against Michael Petersen in exchange for the plea in his ex-wife’s death. Michael Petersen has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from Elsbernd’s death.

Grants Now Available to Improve Neb. Soil Health

nrcs(AP) — Federal grants are now available for projects to help improve Nebraska’s soil health.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service says public and private groups can apply for the funding. Officials say a total of $150,000 is available, and the maximum award for any one project is $75,000. Applications are due by the close of business on May 16.

The Conservation Innovation Grants are designed to help speed the development of new technology and practices.

Grant proposals will need to focus on at least one of several soil health topics. Possible topics include the effect that cover crops have on soil erosion and soil moisture, grazing management, and the impacts of no-till compared with conventional tillage systems.

3 Bayard City Workers Charged with Theft

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_medium(AP) — Three city workers have been arrested and charged in the theft and sale of scrap metal from the Nebraska Panhandle city of Bayard.

Court documents say Bayard streets superintendent Kevin Wurm told two of his workers to sell the metal and evenly divide the proceeds between the three of them. Authorities say three loads of scrap metal were sold earlier this month to a salvage yard in Minatare (mihn-uh-TEHR’) for a total of nearly $940.

The 44-year-old Wurm is charged with felony theft. Twenty-nine-year-old Joshua Buskirk and 31-year-old Joshua Kinney are charged with felony aiding and abetting.

Online court records don’t list attorneys for any of the three men.

Teen Accused in Scotts Bluff Co. Jail Attack Will Be Tried as Adult

Guy Eagle Elk
Guy Eagle Elk

(AP) — The case against a 16-year-old who is accused of helping with the fatal assault of a Western Nebraska jail guard earlier this year will remain in adult court.

District Judge Travis O’Gorman rejected a motion to move Guy Eagle Elk’s case to juvenile court.

Eagle Elk is accused of aiding in the assault that killed Scotts Bluff County Corrections Officer Amanda Baker on Feb. 14. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say Eagle Elk told a fellow inmate how to choke Baker into unconsciousness so her jail keys could be taken, and Eagle Elk encouraged the other inmate to carry out the attack.

Eagle Elk, of Lisco, Neb., has said he didn’t intend for the guard to be seriously hurt. He is scheduled for a July trial.
